Glacier Express in Switzerland: Hannah Hummel's Luxurious Journey Through the Alps
Hannah Hummel checks in on our behalf for the Glacier Express: The journey starts in the winter sports resort of St. Moritz, a vacation destination for the jet set. The eight-hour journey will take her to Zermatt on the Matterhorn - one of the Swiss Alps’ highest peaks. Along the way, the train traverses a pass some 2,000 meters up, crossed almost 300 bridges and trundles through 91 tunnels. Travelers can marvel at panoramas of spectacular mountain scenery through the train’s
extra-large windows.
On the journey, enjoy the exclusive on-board service including a three-course meal of Swiss cuisine. Tickets in Excellence Class cost 650 euros, giving you a seven-course meal with wine pairing, champagne, and even a concierge.
Who wouldn't want to take a trip?

If I could choose one person as a travel partner it would be Hannah. Even if the weather was miserable her smile would be enough to brighten my day. She is the reason I have the travel bug! 😍
We're Dutch, we own a chalet in Mattertal close to Zermatt. We travelled with the glacier express to Sankt Moritz and back the other day. The train is modern but the train tracks much be old. The train goes very slow and the train journey is not very comfortable. After more than 8 hours we're glad to get out. Views are beautiful. Zermatt is car-free, making it a more beautiful place than St. Moritz.

All the steep sections are on rack-and-pinion. This causes a LOT of vibration that can be felt, especially if you're sitting close to the loco.
Thank you Hannah; you are a breath a fresh air.
This is something I would love to experience. This is definitely on my bucket list. I have never been on a real train before.

During the summer it is possible to travel with trains hauled by rack-and-pinion steam locomotives along the Furka summit line, along which the GLACIER EXPRESS traveled before the opening of the Furka base tunnel to traffic. The company is called DFB (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke) which is the anagram of the acronym of the company BFD (Brig - Furka - Disentis) which initially managed the railway which was then sold to the FO company (Furka Oberalp)

Love your Scottish accent!
Beautiful did the whole track in 2018 (2nd class) but the mountain view doesn't care in which class you travel
I've been on the Chur to St. Moritz stretch, it's astonishingly beautiful. Best option is to look out for the special one day discount tickets from SBB in advance, which allow you to travel for 24 hours anywhere in Switzerland on the train, bus and some ferries. (Otherwise it's very expensive!)

man I love Will C.. GBR!
I never rode the Glacier Express but enjoyed rides on the Furka-Oberalp and Rhätiche Bahn a couple times in the 1980s. There are some details that are wrong in this video. First is the obvious one that the passage over the Furka was impossible during winter because not only did the snow block it, but there was an entire bridge that had to be disassembled/reassembled every year because otherwise Mother Nature would tear it down. Also, until the opening of the Furka base tunnel, the highest point was not the Oberalppass but the Furkapass. For anyone actually caring about the trains, I suggest they look at the heritage trains still operating part if the old track. Lots of videos on YT.

Typically, there would be an engine switch, since the Rhätiche Bahn sections (Disentis-Chur-St Moritz) don't have the rack-and-pinion tracks of the old Furka-Oberalp parts.

Why did the Engineer say it was dangerous? I took the glacier express in September from Zermatt to Saint Moritz and I was a nervous wreck between Chur and Saint Moritz. So that is very interesting to hear the engineer say that! I thought I was being a baby for being scared. It was definitely worth it though, for the beautiful views. The food onboard was delicious as well. There was an accident where a waiter fell with a bunch of dessert plates and broke his knee in our car, so that was unfortunate.

Where in the name express does it say it's supposed to be fast?
@TorstenLif
3 ай бұрын
Nowhere. It qualifies as an "express" by not stopping at a number of intermediate stations, which makes it slightly faster on average. Same way as the New York subway has express trains that zoom past some stations but actually go the same speed as the regulars on the tracks.
Only 7 and a half minutes???
Ganz shoene Reise.
Why is it dangerous?

It is expensive, but that`s why it is called the "Excellence Class"🧐
In 1981 I rode the Furka-Oberalp train Brig-Disentis (not the overpriced Glacier "Express"). In 1989 I returned with my bike and kicked off a "cheater's tour" by riding the local trains up from Chur to the Oberalppass. As I was getting ready to start cycling, the Glacier Express passed me. But as I rode past the lake near the summit and started going downhill, I caught up with the train! People were hanging out the windows, taking pictures, waving and cheering me on as I passed them. So I stopped and photographed them as they passed me. More happy waving. Then I let go of my brakes, passed the train again, stopped at the next serpentine bend, took more pictures, repeat at the next hairpin, then the next. The people on the train eventually got tired of waving at me. Presumably, they were wondering why they'd paid such a hefty surcharge to ride on an "express" train that kept getting overtaken by a cyclist, over and over...
Train driver... i thought he was a loco pilot😂😂😂
