Katanas are designed with handles that can be easy to remove for cleaning and replacement. Usually, the swordsmith leaves their signature on the tang under the handle

His sword broke because Sanemi is physically stronger, breaking the wooden sword since water breathing more defensive making Giyuu block and parry more than Sanemi. While I believe Sanemi is better in both swordsmanship and physical strength, this fight isn’t a good representation of who’d win because the wooden swords aren’t as strong as nichirin

Water breathing is defensive, that's why using the side of the sword is often used to parry to not dull the blade, but if you're using a wooden sword, the sword doesn't have the enough strength to parry an upcoming attack therefore breaking his sword a bit faster.

Now that I think about it no wonder Giyu survived Akaza. Akaza was a beast and if it wasn't for his own wishes would have killed them but Giyu held his own and with minimal damage after the fight due to not just h being a hashira but looking back at the manga his moves were definitely defensive while rengoku was lots of offense moves in the manga

@@maries8364 indeed. Water breathing focuses on fluid motion so they can change stance from offense to defense smoothly, while fire breathing is more on wide movements that can deal more damage but leaves a large opening for the opponents to attack.

It was adorable how Giyu was sitting there waiting for Tanjiro to wake up after Sanemi knocked him out.😅

Bro… casually just ignoring the fact that Giyu wasn’t fighting at full potential because he said Sanemi was more mad than anything so he didn’t declare it training. Then he draws it by breaking Sanemi’s sword as well as his own.

Agression vs depression

You know you could argue that Giyu is the better swordsman. Here is why. During their sparring match Giyu’s bokuto cracks. However, they keep fighting and instead of it breaking at the next move or hit, the bokuto stays together. It is only when both bokuto come together in the last frame that both break. Can you imagine the skill it takes not to allow a cracked bokuto to completely break at the next swing or hit? It should have just broke with the next swing forget about the next hit. But it didn’t. He adjusted his fighting to keep going with Sanemi and not allow that wooden bokuto to completely crack during the rest of the fight. Beg to differ but that is some skill. IMHO.

Here’s why you were actually wrong. Giyuu’s swords cracks. He breaks the sword with his cracked one so his is not the first to actually break. Second is intent we rarely ever see him trying to harm someone. We only see him really do it in once part of the series and that’s when he is fighting lower moon 5. In that training, Giyuu, you can tell that you was not actually trying to harm anyone in fact, he didn’t even continue after being offered to fight with their bare hands. Sanami wanted he was trying to actively harm him. Giyuu was holding back in that fight We also know he’s one of the better strategist in the series . And that’s half the battle.

I kinda disagree with this based on the fact of how you explained it . If the swordsman has proper edge alignment like you said it should always glide right through the target , you specify nothing on a the user is on defense . Also using anime for these sorts of battles is tricky just due to the fact animes love to ham things up and be very extra with how they portray thins JJK is a great example . Still a cool thought process but I more or less disagree in this being a nod to who would win . I think it was more to show how aggressive Sanemi is and how strong he is , it was a sparring match and while Sanemi is acting as if he was trying to Kill Giyu it was more just a show of strength . Using manga for vs is just more consistent for these sorts of things .

I’m failing to see how a sword cracking first indicates who’s stronger

It really depends on which side they are on if defensive or offensive, since sanemi is on offensive and his breathing style is purely just offensive ofcourse giyu's sword will break, but since wind has little to no defensive moves, sanemi will most likely lose.

Also if you look at the end of season 4 when everyone’s falling into the infinity castle. The background is 2 different colours. Gold for people who make it out and red for those who don’t 😭

I disagree.Giyu's sword cracked first but he fought with that sword in the remaining fight and both swords are brocken simultaneously. Such a great swordsmanship is observed from giyu. Also his swordsmanship is fluid like his water breathing. The ultimate dead calm technique implies that his sword is unwavering or unshakable and thats beyond fantastic. Sanemi Shinazugava has high physical strength apart from his techniques.

Things you forget. 1. Intent to kill or harm. 2. Forgers and ores also matter. 3. One sword could be older than the other and thus have more use.

Strength: Sanemi Speed: Equal Endurance: Sanemi Stamina: Giyuu Also Giyuu was the first to beat his Uppermoon, run into Muzan, and hold him off until the rest of the Hashiras arrived, then was the only one able to try to hold off dkt. That’s gotta say for something.

Just because Sanemi cracked his sword with one attack isn’t necessarily proof that he’s stronger considering how well Giyu was holding his own throughout the entirety of the fight without showing any sign of being overwhelmed. Another thing to consider is water breathing is a more defensive style while wind breathing is offensive. And if we’re gonna use the sword breaking, Giyu break his sword first before his own sword broke. Bottom line, Sanemi maybe the second strongest Hashira, but Giyu is ABSOLUTELY NOT far behind.

You forgot to tell that after that they broke each of their wooden swords.

I don't think that kind of logic applies to wooden swords since they don't have a real edge and you can't really chip them like they do in the anime

I love how we got to see a pretty defensive breathing style against a pretty offensive breathing style

First, this concept can't be applied to bokuto as it is a blunt weapon which will not recieve a wear and tear like a sharp nichirin because of blunt force impact. Also, the power of the weilder also depends how much wear and tear will happen as a sword's durability will be directly proportional to a swordsman's power. For eg:- Yoriichi's sword was much stronger compared to other slayers. Now, Sanemi is much stronger than Giyu as it's directly stated in databook 2 on page one hundred five that Gyomie and Sanemi are relative(as they trained each other to new height) with Gyomie edging out Sanemi a bit. So in short, Gyomie > Sanemi >>>> rest of the hashiras which is proven by their feats.

Sanemi's Kokushibo feats aren't impressive at ALL, and his Muzan feats are only marginally better. Sanemi is equal to Giyu, and they're both weaker than Marked, STW Obanai. It's quite simple.

So with his Logic Zenitsu is above both of them,Since his blade didn’t break since he focused on one form of thunder breathing,causing Him to master it COMPLETELY so his sword wouldn’t break. It all really has to do with your experience and skill,not who’s stronger. And Giyu’s wooden sword broke first since wind breathing is offensive,while Water breathing is defensive,making it not damage Sanemi’s wooden sword. But in the end both swords broke

He broke the sword not because of better technique really but his breathing style. We know they don’t actually summon elements however his wind based breathing style generates actual winds that are offensive and do damage also.

Sanemi has better attack but I doubt any of his forms can break through Dead Calm

It’s because Sanemi used a breathing style amping his attack while Giyu blocked without using a breathing style to match Sanemi’s attack. Pretty simple

But if we see really and really close then we can see that when giyuu and sanemi fight giyuu was going easy on sanemi like look at his face he was chilling but sanemi his face looks like he is struggling.

It is actually quite a close one because sanemi has wind breathing which has very good offence but has very little defence while giyu with water breathing well its quite misunderstood water breathing has offensive forms but it does especially with giyus dead calm have very good defence. now the catch is the reason why sanemi may come off a more powerful is because of his better offence which is the more better option for battling demons because they have infinite stamina and sanemi has his rare marechi blood which also gives him an advantage against demons but against each other where both of them are human and so both having certain limits and sanemis blood will be useless they are shown to be really on parr with each other and so it could go either way a with giyus defensive technique will be more affective here. and so yeah I do believe against each other they are roughly the same with sanemi just having higher potential against demons and so with that he does rank higher but against each other its a close one.
