Slick Rick is my number one artist I've been telling everybody that since then and I'm 32 years old my mom played Mona Lisa while I was born in her stomach and every sense that changed my life that made me want to be a producer off of his first album man it's a classic and the second third fourth album he's a legend on his own right to make person he's like Eddie Murphy playing different roles when it's come to movie acting but what rapping he got different personality different style shout out to Slick Rick the illness to touch the mic

Rick Rubin was also the reason Public Enemy was signed. Russ didn't see the vision of the group at first and thought their style was too bold.

I saw Big Daddy Kane perform at a club in New Jersey in 1989. Slick Rick was hanging out in the crowd and on his way out some dude got a little too close so Rick started to pull out a gun but his boy grabbed Rick's hand and stopped him. I was a couple of feet behind Slick Rick watching the whole thing, so yeah, Ricky D has always been trigger happy.

I always hoped Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick had produced an album with Chill Will and Barry B. That would have been proper to Hip Hop history. Almost with the "All the way to heaven" which they dropped the ball with the Remix... no new Slick Rick entry.. But I do get now how Doug E Fresh's album "Greatest Entertainer" was produced by the Bomb Squad.. Rick put them on him? Or the other Rick.. Rubin? That Doug Fresh album is bomb. Underrated.

As far as storytelling goes, slick Rick is the goat. He's the reason I know how to tell stories in my rhymes. He's the reason I love storytelling in hip hop, let alone other music genres.

First time I met Slick, was in the Bronx at a outdoor Divine Sounds show. He had a few chains and gold finger nails, drinking Guinness stout mixed with Old English, hanging with a cat named Trevor Don (RIP).

Yeah! That stout drink was a real Yard thing from Jamaicans back in da day. Drop an egg in there and some Nestle’s Condensed milk to build you up and yu’ ready for anything the world would throw at you!

I know "Behind Bars" didn't get good reviews, but that song with Warren G was🔥

This was dope... Slick Rick is an all time great MC for sure. "Hey Young World" probably one of the greatest songs ever made in rap and "Great Adventures..." is a top 10/20 all time hiphop album. One thing that I thought they would mention because they played on it a bit, was that "Behind Bars" single that Warren G produced. That song (and the Les McCann sample) was fire 🔥!! The concept of both the song and video were unique and dope.

The great adventures of SLICK RICK album stood out the most to me as a kid growing up in the 80s, starting from that dope album cover,I was locked in from the the very first song "the rulers back" classic album without a doubt, big ups to the LEGEND SLICK RICK THE RULER also know as RICKY D,love these videos.

In 2023 I am still rocking to hey young world and street talkin❤❤❤

I'd love to know more about Vance Wright. He's a low down cool cat man.

that last track on the video.. it was on the Compliation 'Def Jam greatest Hits vol 1' - that's where I first heard Slick Rick... I played it so much in 1988 .. my brother got so annoyed he said this new rap shit sucks... 2 years later he was buying "the rulers back".

Great video with some all time greats from when it was not mainstream. Curiously, Slick Rick was born in London in the mid 60s, just younger than me by exactly 3 years. Our parents are Jamaican and that contributes immensely to Rick’s dynamic sell righteous way of promoting himself from day one. Slick Rick IS in a class of his own, One true yardie who went up town when he hit The Big Apple.

I was born in DC in 71 & grew up in the DMV/Baltimore & Slick Rick was THE man back in the 80’s…..back then no 2 artists sounded the same & today a lot of (mainstream) rappers sound the same…..Slick Rick’s 1st album with Def Jam is 1 of the best rap albums ever made

It's okay to wear that much jewelry you just have to be willing to defend it. I started rapping because of Slick Rick under Datzilla and just watching this while I prepare for my 2nd project along with Rakim and southern artists I like. I'm 26 so trying to drop from a different angle.

1986 was my first year in High School in Queens, NYC! Just a year earlier, it felt like you could only hear rap music after 11pm or midnight, now Hip Hop was on the radio ALL DAY, and even the White kids into Heavy Metal music at my school were mentioning rap groups they liked. BDP's The Bridge Is Over had dropped, and man, it sucked to be a teenager from Queens, NYC ("....Brooklyn keeps on takin it, and Queens keeps on fakin it!") for awhile!! I remember guys in my class bragging about having cousins from The Bronx or Harlem, as if it gave them some kind of cred!! Ha! Boy I miss that era!

Believe it or not Yah still shines on you.He guides you ,and he watch you as you grew plus pass the age of a lil child that's true.

Looking forward to seeing some more ol skool rap artists up on this KZread thang! So much history out there that needs to be told. It ain’t gonna be in the books, so it needs to be shared. Da flowers need to be watered so the show can grow and flow! 🙏🏽

Doesn't mean he recorded first or came up with the style though as they were around one another before anything was released and the work shows Rick is authentic. Only an originator, a brave individual who truly themselves sounds authentic. You can't copy another man's sound and it sound authentic like Rick does. To sum it up, Slick Rick is authentic and noone can do what he does exactly the way he does it.

Listen - Rick produced as well, something he has rarely got credit for….that style is highly influential today. All his stuff had the singing, scratching, beat boxing.

This guy is one of the top MCs along with Melli Mel,moe dee,kane,chuck d,LL cool j,krs one and Scott la rock,rakim,and don't forget the beastie boys,kool g rap,and so many to mention but late 70s and the 80s and a bit of the 90s was the golden part of hip hop,and then it changed by the infection of gangsta rap,which is ok but no ware near as good as the hip hop days..... Steady b,schooly d,utfo, Roxanne,JVC force,MC lite,just ice,t la rock,jeckle and Hyde,fat boys and epmd.. The hip hop list is endless.....

If I wore a eye patch, I would put a mirror on it to shame everyone I talk to.
