I love that in Germany we pay a deposit of 0.25 for each bottle. You better believe that they get returned, or collected by those needing the money. At large fairs people make hundreds of Euros picking up the bottles left laying around.

Some US states do something like that, unfortunately the number has gone down a lot over the years because few felt that it was worth the effort. I live in one of the maybe five states that still recycles plastic bottles and cans on a large scale and people unfortunately do still litter. I'd say the biggest difference is made at parties and gatherings though, there's usually a bag provided just for bottles.

You're doing fantastic work Maya! What you're doing here is turning an abstract issue like pollution into a clear image of why it's so important to be better for our environment! I never knew that some animals can absorb toxins directly through their skins, and that drove home much more than anything else I've ever seen why we need to keep our waters clean.

Microplastics are a huge problem. I worked on research when I was in college that was about how microplastics were in our rivers and it was crazy how many there were but also how big and small they were. People need to get educated about types of plastics and how they impact the environment and also how to recycle them! Not all plastics are made equal and actually mixing some types of plastics makes them uneligible to be recycled due to the recycling process not being able to handle mixed streams. Stay sustainable everyone!

  • @poppinlochnesshopster3249

Always hear about microplastics, they're everywhere and in everything but I never see anything solid about health effects they actually cause? Surely if they were like, lead/asbestos level bad we would have studies showing their effects by now? Obviously large chunks in animal stomachs are a disaster but when they're microscopic? What if that is an inert state for plastic to exist in, and if we're lucky in years to come after sufficient bans on production of said plastics come in we realize the microplastics are the state we want them to be in?

the beach and hills in my area are completely clean. you have to go there by crossing a pedestrian-only bridge. my city invested in stands with paper trash bags and put huge dumpsters in there. everyone takes this bag when they are going there just because it's so convenient - it's easier to take your trash in a separate, handy bag, than try to take it yourself or remember to pack your own trash bag. it's such an easy way to take care of this gorgeous area, I wish it was more common, especially outside EU.

My friends and I did this when we were teens at a local park. There was so much trash in the creek that flowed through. It took a few weeks but at the end, there was no more trash, and everyone was so happy to see the park clean. The wildlife started moving back in, and as far as I know, the amount of trash in the park has been very minimal since, and its been 10 years. Sometimes all it takes is for people to see how nice a space can be, to want to keep it that way.

I do what maya does In this video and then I weigh and take the volume and analyze it (if it’s plastic) using FTIR analysis. Plastic is most prevalent in our freshwater streams and riparian zones. near where i work is a quays like body or water and every year loads of ducks, geese, swans and other birds use it. at the moment in the area where the water meets the land its full of trash and its also the same area they like to stand. a few weeks ago i was visiting and saw geese nibbling at literally polystyrene. so i took all of and binned it. ive wanted to go back with some bin bags and a grabber stick and clear the whole thing and i think now seeing you and how easy it is i think ill do it :) i love all that you do and the positive messages you share Xx

Love trash cleanups. I do a bit when I can and occasionally do a bit while on walks at my local park. I need reasons to go be active and it helps. People are pretty big on being gentle with the local ecology though. We have protected wetlands areas and they're literally fixing the natural erotion so the animals don't lose their habitat. I regularly try to help my local wildlife and I'm friends with the wildlife rescue. I had to bring a couple birds with hurt wings in, they caught on my porch during storms because the lightening is worse than ever. Also had a lot of smoke issues from wildfires up North this year. I'm slightly asthmatic and was full on wheezing for like 2 weeks this year. It was bad.

I pick up trash all the time but it's just my lazy slob of a roommate's trash all over the kitchen and apartment lol.

it'd be cool if maya set up a date, like a cleanup day, where everyone went to clean their local area and everyone who wanted to took pics/videos and sent them in for maya to see. Before and after pictures, wildlife pictures (like ducks and such), and weird things they found while cleaning would be so cute. I feel like Maya is the perfect public person to encourage something like that, just this video is making me want to go out and clean up!

I joined a club in college recently because of a trash cleanup. It was super fun and meeting other passionate people was really great!

Imagine if every 100 people who watched this video went out and picked up some trash. Even if this video only for 50,000 views the impact would be crazy on those small communities.

Thank you for all of your efforts to help wildlife. You are an amazing voice for the voiceless. I suggest...you really should organize local area clean-ups. There is so much trash there and I have to think that many people would be willing to show up to help you get this done quicker (and could be done weekly, monthly, whenever you find a spot that needs it). I live in Central Texas and I would absolutely be willing to help out this amazing cause. Also, while those silica packets have no business in nature, they are chemically inert and not toxic (but, because they don't break down, are absolutely a choking hazard and can cause blockages which kill animals when eaten).

in the Netherlands (and in Germany aswell, Belgium I think does it too) we pay a deposit for things like cans and plastic and glass bottles. we get the money back by bringing it to a store or anywhere where there is a collection point. we even have collection points on big train stations! there're still people that just throw that stuff out and it still ends up in nature sometimes, but it has cut down on pollution significantly. in general the Netherlands recycling system is pretty good, at most supermarkets there are big collector trash cans where you can throw away other types of glass that don't have deposits and its even sorted into different colour groups. a lot of supermarkets also have paper disposals and other plastic disposals.
