Give Me an Answer -

Cliffe Knechtle has a great conversation with college students at a campus in the southwest US.
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

As I like to put it, looked at from the POV of well-heeled Westerners living cushy lives at elite institutions, the OT often looks rough and even cruel. But compare ancient Israel to the cultures and civilizations around them and it quickly becomes clear that they were on the cutting edge of civil rights progress.

For the most part, the majority of these people ask these "gotcha" questions, but as soon as Cliff answers their questions, they just move on to the next question or just interrupt him. There's no acknowledgement, processing, or seeming acceptance of what Cliff just lays on them. It doesn't seem they come to the table seeking truth as much as they are trying just to prove Cliff wrong.

Just a note about that first man's question concerning the stoning of an unruly child. Dennis Prager, a Jewish scholar and political commentator, referred to this passage recently and he said something like this: because of this passage, which made parents expose their unruly child to the community (to be stoned), this actually prevented the killing of children because now they would have to air their dirty family laundry for all the community to see; you could not kill your child in private. And no one wanted to have that kind of public shame. So, you see, there is more to a command than would first appear to us in our superficial reading. Context - textual and social - are very important to understand much of the Bible. People making judgments on the Bible in their smugness and pride often miss these insights.

I have been watching his videos, since I work graveyards, and I have learned a lot in the context of the Bible. The man raising the questions to Cliffe had some very good questions but Cliffe was able to answer the man's biblically based questions with scripture. Not only with scripture but toward the end of the questioning he uses the analogy of slapping the girl in the face or giving her money; both good examples of our free will.

Did God just "change his mind" about slavery, polygamy, infanticide, genocide, ect? Indeed did Jesus himself not say about those mosaic laws that _"he who breaks even the smallest of these laws will be considered least in heaven "_ and that he came _"NOT to change the law"_ _"not one jot or tiddle until all things have come to pass"_ John 14 : 9 *Jesus stated* _"the one having seen Me has seen the Father_ _How is it you say, ‘Show us the Father'_ _Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me_ ? _"I am not speaking the words which I am saying to you from Myself, but the Father abiding in Me is doing His works"_ Are the Ten COMMANDMENTS not in the old testament? do you regard the bible like it's some kind of chinese buffet where you can just pick & choose the bits you like, whilst ignoring the rest. Presumably you will be able to direct me to where Jesus tells us that the OWNING and beating of slaves with a rod is actually not moral regardless of what Exodus 21, says ?? How ironic Christians frequently complain about "moral relativism" yet here you arguing that these are moral dictates that applied in a different "location", "time" and "culture" to a specific people ?? 🤔🤔 You see in reality it's YOU that's is advocating for a form of *moral relativism* with your "new covernant" garbage. The first mans question in the beginning of the video reveals just how much people dont read or understand the bible. Abraham didn't do what he did with Isaac because he thought "God wants me to kill my son", rather Abraham believed, "God promised me my son and that my descendants would be as countless as the stars". Abraham wasn't justified because he was doing what God told him to do, he was justified by his faith in Gods promises and trust in Gods character. It is a real shame many believers have forgotten this in favor of works based doctrines where one justifies themselves.

And the fact that he didn't know that verse about Jesus equating anger to murder was a big tip off he has not read the NT. With folks like this, the only value in talking with them is that you can talk to others in the crowd. There is no sense in trying to reason with them directly because they aren't interested. You either force them to acknowledge what you are saying to them and call out their deception or you make your point to the crowd based on a couple of that man's questions and send him on his way. For people like him, there will always be another question and no answer will ever be sufficient. In short, the man is jerk and wise people shouldn't suffer jerks for very long.

If someone ever asked me if i had faith of Abraham to sacrifice son on altar, i would mention that in Abraham's day that child sacrifice was a common thing to do to appease the gods. But that isnt were Abrahams faith lay it was in the fact that he knew God would raise Isaac from the dead.

@askcliffe, now I have a question. How did Abraham "violently disobey God"? If you are referring to him taking Hagar as per the request of Sarai, Abraham wasn't rebuked for that. If you are referring to Abraham telling people Sarah was his sister only and not his wife, that at best would have been a deception out of fear of being killed, but that wasn't violently disobeying God. Genesis 26:5 states Abraham obeyed everything the Creator commanded him and that was the catalyst of why Abraham became the father of many nations as well as why Isaac inherited the covenant. Books such as Jasher and Jubilees shows Abraham having a more serious faith in the Creator at age 14 than his pagan father and brothers, one of which died trying to save an idol that was on fire.

@17:35 the answer to that question Cliffe , is because of the Genesis 6 narattive, God sent the flood the save man KIND. the "Sons of God" mentioned there in Gen 6 is referring to Angels coming down mating with human women and producing an offspring called the Nephilim .

Ephesians 4:4-6New King James Version (NKJV) 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, ONE FAITH, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you[a] all. Footnotes: Ephesians 4:6 NU-Text omits you; M-Text reads us.

I have a question. I'm a Christian, love Cliffe's videos, etc. But I would like to know how we as Christians can answer the tough question about why God told Abraham to kill Isaac. I do love the symbolism that dwells in the Abraham narrative which points to Jesus' sacrifice, and Abraham's faith to actually go forward with it. BUT, just as Cliffe said, we would never think it was God telling us to kill our child. So why did Abraham listen? Was it really God telling him to kill Isaac? Should Abraham have not listened? How could God direct a person to kill their child? I ask in purity of heart, so please be gentle on me, brothers and sisters in Christ. I just really would like to know how we as Christians can respond to objections on this matter. Also, I'd like to understand this passage better for my own personal life of Scripture study.

God first spoke to people directly and they would undeniably know it was Him, they could not think it was a delusion they were experiencing. nowadays we know The Truth (Christ) and like Cliffe said, to go against His teaching of do not murder if we think in our mind that "God" is telling us to kill then we are being delusional. hopefully this kinda helps. our faith is like Abrahams because we believe without seeing, The Word is all we need, people with hard hearts reject The Word where He speaks, in the heart

The first guy is very sarcastic and one sided. He obviously didn’t read on when Paul said And Masters treat your slave fairly and do what is right, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven. And to his first point, the Bible say that God don’t do evil, neither he tempt man with it, but when a man is tempted he is drawn away by his own lust. So God ain’t gone tell you to do that

Another example is the people of Nineveh, God went sent Jonah to tell them that God will destroy the city, and the people repented, and God relented, I believe the reason why God declares his judgement, is to give an opportunity for the people to repent, and the "God changed his mind" is for the sake of the audience because remember the bible was also written by man, and from our perspective, God probably didn't really change his mind, because he planned for them to repent, but to us, it looks that way

@askcliffe at the part about polygamy and the connotation that it was "sinful" behavior, that was not an accurate statement since there are instructions within the Law such as Exodus 21:10-11 and Deuteronomy 21:15-17 that regulated polygyny (the specific variation of polygamy referring to a man having more than one wife). Then there is 2 Samuel 12:8 where through the prophet the Creator took credit for giving David his master's wives (plural) and that if that and the other things the Creator gave him weren't enough that He would have given David more of such things. Even though I am not a polygynist, those who are haven't sinned. As for the qualifications regarding bishops, deacons and elders having "one" wife, keep in mind that the Greek word mia means one or first, such as mias ho sabbaton literally means one/first of the Sabbaths.

As for the individual who started his questions with killing 4 school children as a bait to switch it to killing your own son, he was probably not aware of Jasher 22:41-55 where it illustrates how the Creator came up with the idea of offering Isaac as a burnt offering. Here is the text of that: 41 And when Isaac was thirty-seven years old, Ishmael his brother was going about with him in the tent. 42 And Ishmael boasted of himself to Isaac, saying, I was thirteen years old when the Lord spoke to my father to circumcise us, and I did according to the word of the Lord which he spoke to my father, and I gave my soul unto the Lord, and I did not transgress his word which he commanded my father. 43 And Isaac answered Ishmael, saying, Why dost thou boast to me about this, about a little bit of thy flesh which thou didst take from thy body, concerning which the Lord commanded thee? 44 As the Lord liveth, the God of my father Abraham, if the Lord should say unto my father, Take now thy son Isaac and bring him up an offering before me, I would not refrain but I would joyfully accede to it. 45 And the Lord heard the word that Isaac spoke to Ishmael, and it seemed good in the sight of the Lord, and he thought to try Abraham in this matter. 46 And the day arrived when the sons of God came and placed themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with the sons of God before the Lord. 47 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? and Satan answered the Lord and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 48 And the Lord said to Satan, What is thy word to me concerning all the children of the earth? and Satan answered the Lord and said, I have seen all the children of the earth who serve thee and remember thee when they require anything from thee. 49 And when thou givest them the thing which they require from thee, they sit at their ease, and forsake thee and they remember thee no more. 50 Hast thou seen Abraham the son of Terah, who at first had no children, and he served thee and erected altars to thee wherever he came, and he brought up offerings upon them, and he proclaimed thy name continually to all the children of the earth. 51 And now that his son Isaac is born to him, he has forsaken thee, he has made a great feast for all the inhabitants of the land, and the Lord he has forgotten. 52 For amidst all that he has done he brought thee no offering; neither burnt offering nor peace offering, neither ox, lamb nor goat of all that he killed on the day that his son was weaned. 53 Even from the time of his son's birth till now, being thirty-seven years, he built no altar before thee, nor brought any offering to thee, for he saw that thou didst give what he requested before thee, and he therefore forsook thee. 54 And the Lord said to Satan, Hast thou thus considered my servant Abraham? for there is none like him upon earth, a perfect and an upright man before me, one that feareth God and avoideth evil; as I live, were I to say unto him, Bring up Isaac thy son before me, he would not withhold him from me, much more if I told him to bring up a burnt offering before me from his flock or herds. 55 And Satan answered the Lord and said, Speak then now unto Abraham as thou hast said, and thou wilt see whether he will not this day transgress and cast aside thy words. Verse 44 is where Isaac made the declaration and that is where the Creator got the idea to test Abraham in such a manner. Jasher 23 is basically the parallel of Genesis 22. The point is that it wasn't the Creator who came up with the idea, but that Abraham's own son Isaac opened his mouth and boasted to one up Ishmael who was boasting about being circumcised in the flesh. The take away is be mindful about what you declare. It is like the saying about be careful of what you wish for, because you just might get it.
