Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Italian Unification

Giuseppe Garibaldi became the symbol of Italian unification - the Risorgimento. He won fame and love of the soldiers and the common population. His adherence to principles more than once led him to conflicts with those in power, but also made him a cult figure for revolutionary movements around the world, including in the USSR.

"You, too, women, cast away all the cowards from your embraces; they will give you only cowards for children, and you who are the daughters of the land of beauty must bear children who are noble and brave" --Giuseppe Garibaldi

An extremely interesting human. A warrior for National liberty if there ever was one. A true believer of the Age of Enlightenment ideals and classical liberalism.

Something I do not understand. If Giuseppe Garibaldi dedicated his life to the Ubification of Italy but prior to unification there was no Italy. Then where did Italy come in? Had there ever been a Country named Italy before and where was it?

The concept of Italy as a geographical concept existed long before even the rise of Rome. Under Rome the province of Italia forged a mostly unique identity and became to be seen a clear identity. During the Middle Ages the unifying culture of Italian gave rise to the nation of Italy which was in 1870 finally fully united into nation state of Italy.

What you didn’t mention is that Garibaldi’s success in the Kingdom of the two Sicilies was largely due to the enemy’s numerically superior armies being paid by the British to surrender because of British interest in a fully operational Suez Canal. Nevertheless take nothing away from Garibaldi who was a charismatic and passionate democrat and a great independent military leader.

I think he was the uno capitaine (a 19th C. proto type of S.F. star trek's j.t. kirk) of the Italiano Republican enterprise. Viva Italia!

Such a drama... National hero became a foreigner and criminal in his own country, in the country that was born thanks to his actions, betrayed by the very king of Sardinia whom Garribaldi trusted the rule over his country...De Cavour and Victor Emmanuel just used Garribaldi in their pesky games of creating a Greater kingdom of Sardinia. Poor people, peasants and labourers who supported Garribaldi and uprisings all over Italy also were betrayed...

I see what you mean. On the other hand, he lived a long life, wasn't killed in a battle, although there were plenty of chances. Italy was united at the end, as he dreamed. Yes, his hometown is now French, but I don't think he was considered a foreigner back then, it was just his personal feeling. The people of Italy wouldn't think that he wasn't one of them. I consider his life path rather as a positive one, with a good ending.
