GISELLE (Seymour, Nureyev, Mason, Vamos)

Excerpts from Act II with fantastic performances, musical tempi, lighting, direction, and proper editing. Wish all ballet films could be like this.

To uploader: Much gratitude for this gem of Rudolf. Ppl usu revere Mikhail for leaps, but Rudi’s air jumps,& added scissor beats are DAZZLING.; he’s complete package. These Rudi films need remastering; no one has yet to copy his superb artistic perfection. If a leopard / cheetah could dance, it would move like Rudolph.

@@jcliff26 Thank you so much for letting me know, and for locating these rather rare videos. I loved Nureyev as a young dancer at NCSA--he was our idol for sure (early 1970s teenie-bopper ballet students). Marsha Mason and Lynn Seymour, just wonderful. All of them are so full of emotion. What an era. Thanks again--such a gift today!

What a delight to see this gem! Monica Mason is a deservedly legendary Myrtha. I loved how defiant Seymour's Giselle was when she protected Nureyev's palpably terrified Albrecht from Myrtha's "dance till you die!" command. Very effective lighting, and really beautiful work from the corps de ballet as well. I'm familiar with the ABT Bruhn/Fracci movie of Giselle - it is fascinating to see another filmed version from around the same time period. Thank you, Mr. Clifford, for posting this terrific performance.

The faster tempo really makes a difference. Everyone is much more assertive! Love Myrtha and her arms outstretched and crossed, angry not pouting. Giselle convincing as a village girl not a precious ballerina. And Rudy, well getting kind of stiff but definitely still has his moments. Altogether a treat to see this, not another run of the mill production. Enjoyed it very much, mucho gracias. And yes eerily dreamy lighting too!

This is a fabulous production of 'Giselle'! Monica Mason is the Queen of all Myrtas; spine-chilling! Lynn Seymour is a wonderful Giselle. I love the assertive way she comes rushing to Albrecht's defence, as much as if to say, "You want to kill my Albrecht? Forget it, lady; it ain't happening!" No die-away heroine, this! The expression of horror on Rudolf's face at the realisation that there will be no mercy from the Wilis is amazing, as is his dancing, of course, and Youri Vamos makes a sympathetic Hilarion. (Poor Hilarion gets a raw deal in the story of Giselle, I think; I'd like to see him rescued too, perhaps by another village maiden who has loved him in vain for years and who drives back the Wilis with a cross and holy water? Baulked of one prey, they would be all the more determined not to let Albrecht escape, but the power of bitterness and vengeance would be broken by the power of love and forgiveness. Just a thought...)

Lovely studio production and I like Seymour a lot... a wonderful dancing actress. Rudi... well, he's already flinging himself around at this stage... 41 years old and probably should have quit dancing these roles a year or two before. He's always a strong presence onstage but Giselle is romantic ballet and his sloppiness and fussiness at this stage of his career just doesn't jive well with the style required.
