The story can only be so long. The dancers and audiences will lose stamina if it drags on, so you just sort of have to fill in the blanks.

Actually in some versions she has a heart disease and too much excitement and dancing was the main reason why her mother was so protective of her.

One of my favorite ballets! It’s tragic yet beautiful.

When you have lived through it, you understand Giselle.

Thank you! :-) I have always understood that wilis are there to keep on revenging every night. They are not trying to find a man to join them in death in order to be set free from being a wili; they love to haunt and revenge. And that it is not what Giselle wants. In that version, Giselle is not actually sacrficing herself, but actually redeems herself and breaks free from the curse of haunting ever after. I have heard, that in the earliest versions she was actually shown ascending to heaven in the very end. Anyways, it is a haunting and powerful story and can be told and interpreted in different ways. :-)

A truly beautiful yet tragic piece. I’ve understudied for this and many other roles, though this role and performance are among my top favorites.

I went to see Giselle at Hanoi Opera House it was breathtakingly beautiful

She had heart problems before she met Albrecht. Thats why her Mom didn't want her to dance

Thank you. My daughter is studying ballet at college and hoping to go on to work in the industry. She is about to perform in Giselle with the EYB, and I am clueless. At least I will understand the storyline when I go and see her performance

I think Hilarion's death is important because there you also see two sides of the same coin, that is, how Myrta and Giselle react to the same thing (a tragic death caused by heartbreak and a man). While Myrta is an avenger who has no mercy, Giselle, despite what Albrecht did to her, still saves him. And yes, I also felt sorry for Hilarion but oh well. That makes the story interesting.

I just watched this ballet and I had no idea what was going

This was a beautiful video about such a great romantic ballet. It's nice that you are keeping up the videos, just a pity here that you didn't explained the historical background here (Theophile Gautier, who was actually indeed in love with the first Giselle Carlotta Grisi, had written the libretto, and this is what fascinated me again and again, especially as I had already in childhood an adaption of his work Le Capitane Fracasse, and it freaked me out that this was the same guy who wrote Gisellle...). I don't know how you feel about the ending, but I still like a more "hopeful" interpretation, as also the music is so pretty in the ending.... Nevertheless, I'm also excited to see more ballets explained here (;

I'm still experimenting with content and formatting, so I'll keep this feedback in mind with future videos. 🙂 I'll also most likely make a separate video of the history behind "Giselle" for viewers who are interested.

I was also going to comment on your Swan Lake video, but accidentally deleted my comment....Swan Lake is much more tricky to explain in only five minutes, especially the history. (I'm rearching this historical background for such a long time and I changed again and again my ideas about it. From all the different productions, I would rather to see a more "peaceful" version like in the ending of Giselle(well, perhaps less tragic (;) - I'm neither convinced by battles nor by drowning....)

@@felicity1877 Too true! There are so many fascinating theories when it comes to the origin of some of these ballets. Also, the amount of different versions and reinterpretations that exist now make it hard for people to agree on just one story. Nowadays, when I attend a ballet, I try not holding any expectations and just appreciate each production for what it is. 🙂

When I was first confronted with the tragic ending of Swan Lake (the movie with Nurejev and Fonteyn), I was completely disturbed as I only knew the happy ending before, and that is why, I started with ballet history , meanwhile I‘m also quite open for all interpretations and the good thing is, that all is possible (Karl Paquette as Rothbart made me even to consider a kind of villian ever after 😂😉)

Morate uzeti u obzir vrijeme u kojem je djelo nastalo;to je bilo doba romantizma kad su literatura i glazba bile prepune tragičnih likova.Pa završila sam srednju baletnu školu i vrlo dobro prostudirala odnos on i ona.Jednom smo nas dvije prijateljice pred instruktoricom napravile takvu parodiju da su joj suze pošle na oči.Naime cijelu godinu smo nalazile poslove da bi skupile novac i otišle u London pogledati barisnjikova u ulozi Alfreda i baš nas je ona scena sa fenjerom natjerala na smijuriju.Ako se netko nađe uvrijeđen neka oprosti,mi smo se samo šalile ali ako netko želi čuti postavku u okviru današnjeg vremena neka pita pa ću mu reći

Giselle stabbed herself in the version I just watched

Behind the veil of mystic,music,dance hidden simple story .No deep meaning,no morality. Giselle is so naive and stupid, can't recognize stranger in her village. Didn't listen to Hillarions warnings Bertha is so "protective mother" ,that couldn't help her daughter in a moment of her madness. Squire helps his master in a case of deceit, didn't get any lesson/ punishment. Hillarion who tried to warn and revealed a deception was killed. Albert ( deceiver) got mercy.🤦 ( No word about squire) The themas of Bathilda and Bertha are not disclosed. Gissel's suicide scene was removed from ballet. What we can learn from this story,?🤷

Giselle didn't commit suicide. She had a heart condition that killed her. . Hillarion tried to warn her out of spite, not love. And it was his hatred that killed him. . Her mother was an average hapless woman. It is quite often that the highly emotional and gifted daughters are born to such women. . Giselle was a dancer by nature, a talented beautiful dancer. That is why she turned into a willis - they were all dancers in their past. She forgave Albert and assended to heaven. . Albert was punished, he lost the only real love he would ever know. He repented. And his life will never be happy again. He will just exist, not live and love. . This is all very philosophical. But most people are so far away from normal they are far too angry to understand.

Ballet created in 1840s, there are version of Gissele death in her madness, she took a sword started to spin with,and stabbed herself.Hillarion tried to catch and prevent but too late.. In other version she goes mad and dead from heartbreak. I couldn't find any confirmation of Hilarions "spite and hate" I tried,but in every synopsis and libretto that i read,was only about his love to Gissele. If you have any other information,please share with me. Romantic ballets were so popular in 19th century.))) Turn "romantic love" into holy idol. This idea still works in art ,also in nowdays.But without any connection with real life :⁠-⁠)
