    As a scientist (and a biologist at that!) I’m genuinely offended someone would attempt to use biology to be transphobic. Biology is wonderful and can be very helpful for hormone therapy, stop dragging biology into this, science shouldn’t be used for hate.

    Quoting biology to justify bigotry (even if we assume they're right) is also just silly. I for one don't base my moral judgements off science, unless I'm 100% willing to change my mind when and if the science changes. It's very simple, regardless of what relevant biology may or may not say on the topic, all people deserve to be treated with respect, all people deserve to be who they are and feel comfortable with who they are. Treating others with basic human respect trumps whatever science may say on the subject. Science can only tell us what is likely to be, it cannot make any kind of value judgement.

I am usually a bit wary of ascribing motives to people but in this context I am pretty convinced that people who make such inane comments are deeply insecure about their own relationship to sexuality and gender. I just don't see why being a person some of whose biology is shared by a certain percentile of the population is of any importance beyond showing us the wonderful variety of life.

It even made me aware of the more proper and scientifically correct term for "biological sex", which is also more trans inclucive; "fenotypical sex"! Because you can't tell someones chromosomes by looking at them, even if a baby is born with female genitalia, looks and acts like a female, identifies as female, grows up and goes through female puperty, she might have male chromosomes, but is immune to testosterone, which makes her appear as phenotypical female. Biology and gender is never black and white no matter how much transphobes likes to think it is!

    The best comeback to the whole "it's basic biology" I've seen is something along the lines of "well, I'm sorry you never got to advanced biology". I've heard that high school biology is so simplified that is often wrong and it honestly makes sense.

  • @andien8760

    @andien8760

    Biologist here - yes high school biology is very simplified. It's not necessarily wrong, but it's more black and white without addressing all the nuance. And biology textbooks explain that XX=reproductively female (usually), and XY=reproductively male (usually). That's just for humans, because chromosomes get real crazy depending on the species. And even with humans, XX and XY are not the only combination of chromosomes. But chromosomes ultimately don't really matter because GENDER IDENTITY IS NOT THE SAME AS CHROMOSOMES. There is absolutely zero biological evidence to back up the idea that someone who is XX absolutely must be a woman, and someone with XY absolutely must be a man. All the chromosomes mean is your body forms a certain way. But gender is SO much more complicated than that.

But here’s the thing, you can’t learn something like playing the guitar, for example, if you only learn the basics. There’s an advanced biology behind and about biological sex that proves and validates trans people. Transphobes, pick up a biology book.

    a lot of other biologists have said the same but I'm a professional biochemist and would like to reiterate how laughable it is that anyone would try to say that transphobia has scientific basis. 95% of my job is just being perpetually floored by the extent to which we don't know shit about biology. Life is so mind-bindingly complex and full of surprises, and we barely understand any of it. Two rigid genders defined by any biological factor makes zero sense in the context of how complex and messy biology is

    Transphobia is made from the words Trans, and Phobia. Phobia means an irrational fear of x. Transphobia isn't a hate of trans people, it's fear. Transphobes fear things they don't understand. They don't understand trans people. By their logic, if they don't understand something, then it's wrong. They don't like the fact that people know more than they do. They are afraid of not knowing.

    I mean, there is some truth to it. In a way, every youtuber is playing a character. The Jamie we know is a collaborative effort between the actual Jamie and us viewers. There will always be parts of the real Jamie we don't see, and that's how it should be. That doesn't mean youtube Jamie isn't real or relatable or great--just that there ought to be a healthy distance on the side of viewers. Parasocial relationships are not good things to have in your life; they can often be destructive to the viewers and all you have to do is watch one "I'm burned out" video from any youtuber to see it can be damaging to the creator as well.

    Hi Jamie and friends. I’m not sure if you still read the comments that are this old but I just wanted to tell you that Florida passed a law saying that transgender people in Florida (obviously) schools are not allowed to play for the sports teams that suit their correct gender, and only they can only play for their ASAB’s teams. We’ve seen that discrimination before, but it gets so much worse. Now, if someone’s gender is “disputed” in a school, the staff is allowed to CHECK THEIR GENITALS to see what their ASAB is. This is going to bring on so much trauma for trans people, and even just people whose gender is worth “dispute”. And these are people in school. Children. I am asking you to please raise awareness about this, because I am genuinely scared for everyone who could be affected. -Much love, a worried ally

    I never understood the "pick up a biology book" if people are talking about gender. Biology books are basically about the hardware of the body and everything else nature, not about what is in human or animal minds. Even in my Neuroscience (Science about nerves and the brain) books I never encountered the topic gender, since we are not sure about what causes feeling as a specific gender.

  • @Hugh.Manatee
    @Hugh.Manatee3 жыл бұрын

    As a biology teacher; anyone who tells you to pick up a biology book hasn't read anything beyond high school biology, and even then modern biology books tend to be more nuanced. Even disregarding the sex vs gender issue; the whole X/Y = male, X/X = female thing is only true for 98% of people. If you're a man with a low sperm count, chances are you're an X/X male, likewise there are X/Y females. Some people are born with 3 sex chromosomes, some have 2, but don't have standard male or female genitals. As a general rule of thumb anything you only have a high school level of understanding of: it's probably more complicated than you know.

    In the end of last year I came out to my boyfriend of by now 7 years as asexual. He first was very skeptical about the whole thing and the lgbtqia+ community and it was a learning process for both of us. He was one of the people who complained loudly about official forms having "divers" as a gender option and by now we are both out there openly members/allies of the alphabet mafia and teaching others about it as well. Your channel was such a great addition and help for the the "transition" and we always watch your videos together ♥️🏳️‍🌈 keep doing you Jamie and marry this gorgeous woman♥️

    1999 somewhere in Europe, 5th year of Medical school, lecture about "gender dysphoria & transgender people", i still rembember the introduction of the professor: "Gender has three components" - she said - biological: sex at birth - cerebral/mental: gender identity the person feels it is true to them - social: gender "role" within society the person feels it is conistent with their gender identity "The above need to be alligned for people to feel comfortable in their own selves and contrary to popular belief the biological component is the least important in terms of determining gender identity and the easiest to change. Therefore medicine should provide the tools that give people the opportunity to change their biological sex and achieve fulfilment and happiness" I know that the above excludes non-binary people but remember this was in 1999 and I believe we did not know much about them back then. Nevertheless that professor was extraordinary and she pushed for the care of transgender people to be free in public hospitals and for treatment to start mid-puberty. I bet you, that professor has "picked up many biology books" in her time. 😉

Also that biology they learn is biased and outdated. The books are so old it doesn’t have the new research. The research is always advance and there are new discoveries that happen all the time. Those ppl only scratched the surface of what biology is they didn’t learn the specifics

Oh and what is that, "the word gender is used to indicate psychological, cultural and social characteristics of a sex." So gender does not stand for your chromosomes, whaaaat!?!?! And what's that I see, transgender genderdisphoria, coming out? Well seems like Biology approves transgender. One of the best responses I've ever seen to say to people who say "Have you ever learned basic biology?" is "Have you ever learned anything past that?" I can't remember where I read that, but now every time I see a transphobe saying something like "It's basic biology!" that's my first thought XD People seem to like to simplify information and academics without seeming to realize that the base knowledge is rarely the full picture.
