Sarabitch Oh I don’t get it, tho. The painting is so much older than that (mote than 300 years) and the novel is from 1999. Maybe they just wanted to make it look old to get the spectators into that mood? I don’t know.

This movie was amazing... as an artist and a movie lover, i cant get over how good it is. Just like the painting, its an absorbing and subtle story about two people who connect and understand eachother as artists.

I'm sorry, I know you comment this 4 long years ago, but you saying the girl and the painter bonded because of art? Nothing to do with art. They fell in love with each other (but I would say mostly lust). Very naive from her part and very reckless from his part, considering he was a married man with lots of kids and she was much younger than him.

They might like each other from the beginning but their feelings towards each one of them only developed through the love and understanding of art.

Yeah well but having them speak English with a Dutch accent is just cruel to the viewers. I'm Dutch and the way Dutch people speak English is usually so incredibly terrible. Also, having non-Dutch people pronounce Dutch words and names... nah. I prefer English then...

I really loved this movie. It's an imaginative story woven around the only 2 known facts; it's a painting of a girl and J.V. painted it. All the rest is speculation. The story, cast, music and acting is quite good but the cinematography is simply amazing. Most of the film you feel totally immersed in a J.V. painting. An incredible work of art.

A great art movie.

A Master piece of filming

Cillian Murphy and his hair were easily the best part of the movie

Word: I was fortunate to rent this in 2003/2004 on VHS tape from Blockbuster video back in the day. I believe that DVD became the standard after 2004, and VHS would be obsolete. This is a very beautiful movie. The trailer is exciting but for the movie you need patience but Scarlett Johansson was awesome in this. She should have won an Oscar back in the day at 19 (years of age). This is a Classic film! I highly recommend it! August 2023.

Orion I have seen the movie and his interest for her is actually peaked by the fact that she understands art and colours and his wife cannot. She helps him brew and make the pigments and then sexual tension ensues, but it is always more like admiration, and respect for her because she knows she cannot be with him. The film is innacurate historically and is merely based upon theories, but the acting and settings as well as the costumes are gold and I do recomend it because of hos interesting it can be to try and see things from another perspective, wich i believe is the whole point of this movie in itself. The whole movie is one big "what if?"

Then how do you explain the relationship between Leonardo da Vinci, who liked men, and (the) Mona Lisa or Michelangelo's Delphic Sybil, a great artist who also sexually preferred men? You're probably not an artist, because you would know that many other "curiosities" can drive a great work of art.

She had an artists, eye like her father. A visually beautiful film. The acting is okay, scarlet looks and acts like a statue, albiet a lovely one. I can,t believe anyone not interested in art liking this movie. It,s way too subtle.🌷🖌️🎨

The movie is almost a Vermeer. Greatly done!! I only would have used repro of the paintings on canvas instead of the repainted stuff (which was not well done enough). And the tile ...I would have use a real one!!! But still a great movie!!!

Dawn Nicca Aryata i wouldnt say it's the painting's actual background. It's based off a fictional book. I recommend taking Chevalier's research and see if she wrote the book with enough accurate research.

The book was so good

i cant wait for the moment when a decade later someone is going to watch this trailer and for god knows what reasons, there will be a lot of comments about a person named John Cena/Jona Cenia/Joana Ceddia/Jana Cedda/John Cenas...etc
