CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Susanna (Winona Ryder) is placed into a mental institution and meets the fiery, frantic Lisa (Angelina Jolie).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The doctor suggests to her parents that she be committed to the Claymore Hospital, and she spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the institution. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgina (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. Girl, Interrupted was based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who really did spend a year-and-a-half in the McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

She wasn't darker or more evil in Maleficent cause director and producer didnt want that for the movie, which is sad because Angelina was perfect for Maleficent, she acted so well, imitated the charater so well, the scene where she curses the princess was perfect, it was Maleficent in all her glory, but the actor has to follow the director's instructions, they cast the best actress for THAT ROLE in particular but didnt put her more darker or sinister 😐. I apologize for my bad english, it's not my native tongue, greetings..

She’s scary in this film because she’s more relatable. I’m pretty sure we’ve all met someone like her in real life at some point in time, male or female. She’s a psychotic bully.

People like this like me for some weird reason. Bullies, i mean. For some reason, they take me on as their little Jimmeny Cricket. I find them whimsical and for some reason, the fuckers listen to me. I don't find them scary. I find them sad and alone and i want to help them.

The more I watch this the more I realize that Lisa was genuinely upset and heartbroken about Jamie being gone but her grief was manifested through her anger. Yep, exactly! A damaged person doesn’t know how to properly deal with their emotions because their sad feelings were more than likely stifled by their abusers. But they definitely pay attention to anger, so she’s learned to channel all her other negative emotions into anger and takes it out on others. As an institution, they probably did understand the grief but because she was inconsolable with her anger, and could possibly be a danger to others, they probably felt they had to sedate her. Just how I see it, but yes, they could’ve handled it differently.

She harms people. Badly. So imo not unfair. Sad for her though. To me people that harm other and themselves but can't stop or see what they're doing is so sad. Same with severe addicts making their families watch them die why they slowly commit suicide I from okc them all the while stealing their hearts and money. It reminds me of zombie movies where the person is still moving but you have to accept they're dangerous and not really there anymore. Anyone can chose to get help but they can't see. They need to ask God for help. Well everyone does but some refuse.

I feel like one of the major problems that this movie highlights on is how patriarchal this society is despite being well into modern age. Most of the problems these women face involve men, but these men are never punished, locked away, or blamed for being part of these crimes. It takes two people to sleep together, yet Susanna is constantly shamed for it, not the professor. Daisy's disgusting father continues to sleep with her and then lock her away. A lot of these characters in the mental health ward have men involved in their lives, but most of these men are living their lives comfortably and freely.

You do know that the movie was set to take place in the 60s, right? Back then people were misdiagnosed all the time, they didn't had the knowledge and/or study to know how to handle them so they locked them away. Sure patriarchy had some contribution, there's no denying in that but men and women suffered equally on that aspect.

Proof that she can have different reactions to similar events ... the suicide of her best friend provoked intense reaction whereas the suicide of Daisy provoked seemingly emotionless reaction. Although in my opinion I wonder if Lisa was just being tough in the face Daisy because she did not want to admit at the time that she drove Daisy to do it. When you see her explode in the tunnel it is evident that she is not emotionless at all and I think this is the crux of her character's misdiagnosis.

as a girl who was locked in a psych ward for no reason this movie hit me like a truck. it's so relatable and somewhat comforting despite the uncomfortable feelings it brings me. it was exactly like this in the psych ward, so many sad broken lives but they were alive. they talked about their most horrible things so casually it'd freak you out. strangely i had the best time in there, at first i was scared, like Susanna, but then i became friends with them and didn't even want to go when they signed me out. Susanna and Lisa's relationship also reminds me of a girl i became friends with for a year. she was dangerous to others AND to herself, but i loved the way she made me feel. i had to let go of her, for my safety's sake. i wish we could keep in touch. but with her I'd actually spiral down to being insane. i loved and feared her for it

@Idc Well for some people, the thought of being forcibly restrained by several men, and drugged against your will is terrifying. You have no control over what's happening to you, nor do you have control over yourself because of what they gave you. You're pretty much at their mercy.

She was magnificent with Charlize in the Astronaut's wife. I don't get why everyone I meet shits all over it calling rubbish, I don't get it? I love the Astronaut's wife Charlize, Johnny and Clea gave exceptional performances in that movie, I am beginning to wonder if people can recognise good acting anymore??.

But she only watches it when she’s on a drug binge, and for the past 17 years, whenever I see the dvd case or a dvr recording, I kno she’s actively in the middle of binging and have to watch out for her overdosing for the entire week. I’ve come to actually HATE seeing this movie, even a still of the movie sends anger shooting through my every nerve.

Sometimes when a film is based on the past they go heavy on the costumes and it's really takes the experience off for you. It's so subtle.

It reminds me of looking at my mom's pics from the 50's and 60's.... Like still regular clothes but just cut slightly different. Except the cars and my aunts "greaser' boyfriends with their leather jackets cigarettes in the folded up in the sleeves of white tshirts Levis with black leather belts and shoes and their hair greased back. They really looked the part! But mostly it was more subtle than some other movies. I think people looked more of the era when they were all dolled up for dances and in their trendiest freshest clothes too.
