Ese es el elegido de dios con la gracias divina
I consider it a privilege and an honor to watch and listen to a truly great musician and teacher such as Giovanni Hidalgo. Watching him play, in any setting, is a priceless lesson. Watching him play is the equivalent of opening the doors to the Library Of Congress . . . so much to learn and so little time . . . but that's the beauty of music, it's infinite. He gives his love and shares his knowledge, wisdom, time and spirit freely. Giovanni Hidalgo is a great musician and teacher, but more importantly, a greater human being.
The man playing "Palitos" (sticks) on the conga rim, is none other than Master Drummer Butch Haynes, from Oakland CA, who along with Bill Summers, Marcus Foster and New York Richard, taught an entire generation of kids (Including myself) Rumba, Abakua, Guaguanco, and Salsa Rhythms, at Sproul Plaza in Berkeley, (Not not the huge thunderous group of hippies playing there, but a smaller group that was usually off the one side), and ushered in a generation of Latin music to the East bay with people Like Pete Escovdeo and Carlos Federico. This is so cool!
Transcendent. So effortless. The beats are just hardwired now. From science to art. Nice job.

Gifted. But give me his father “Mañengue” instead anytime. This Tata Güines, keyboard approach to conga playing gets boring very fast because it relies on speed and gimmicks. It impresses for about two minutes. Then one falls asleep because there is no “meaning”, “authenticity of style” or “storytelling” to the solo. It worked for Miguel Angá but it never worked for “Mañenguito”. Give me Mongo Santamaría, Patato or a young Barretto any time.
