GINORMOUS 3D PRINTER BUILT FROM SCRATCH

After printing around 2000 hours working on a secret project I've found a few things wrong with the previous design and I decided to do another iteration to improve the design. Amongst the things I wanted to improve:
Reliability of the bed moving mechanism, wheels on the sides would work great for a small bed but this one was way too big an heavy so I switched to top rolling wheels.
Weight of the bed: The bed was too heavy so I designed a new bed levelling system based on eccentric nuts that removes the need for a second platform because this one levels straight on the wheels. Pretty happy with this one. I already saved 1.8 Kg but I may go from 5 mm mirror to 3 mm mirror just to see if it holds up and I can shed a bit more weight (probably another 1.5Kg. I may add two extra motors on the Y axis just to divide the power transfer to 4 belts instead of 2 reducing even more the effect of the belts stretching.
Rigidity of the carriage/nozzle assembly: The X axis beam was too flimsy and not very resistant to torsion, I added a second beam and now is as rigid as I need.
Rigidity of the printer base: The base was too flimsy and was as flat as the surface it was sitting on, now with the two extra beams in the bottom and the braces to the top part is way more rigid and also even if the printer twists the bed will twist with it keeping the bed level.
As always leave your feedback in the comments, anything I should improve? Anything I should try?

Surely being able to get good levelling on a huge bed is easier than a small bed? Cause if you printed in the 4 corners, and got them 'close enough' (like maybe 0.2mm off) then near the centre it'd be much closer, and the error margins would be way smaller too Whereas, of course, with a smaller printer, the 4 corners are much closer, so the error margin (and thus the angle of the print bed) is much higher even if the 4 corners are 0.2mm difference
@h.p.baxter8150
4 жыл бұрын
@@Stevo_1998 You are sort of right about that, but still missin the main issue. Increasing a printbed to this size without making it ridicilously heavy will make it inevitably very hard to get it both planar and stiff. A smaller bed is far less problematic in this regard. So leveling this huge bed is much harder since it is much less planar than a smaller printbed can be.

I'm not sure how practical that would be. My corexy system is 600x600mm and the belts are already crazy long enough to be essentially rubber bands even despite the fiberglass in them. He would probably have to upgrade to 12mm wide belts to attempt to counter this effect, which might make it worth it. Assuming he can even get them in lengths that long.

As always, great work! Would definitely like to build a large format printer one day as well. You're an awesome inspiration!
Maybe use a bltouch or an optical sensor to compensate for the height differences, that way you can make a more secure connection between the bed and the frame :) And you should use tougher belts, the 10mm with a steel core are really solid But I really enjoyed watching your masterpiece, keep up the good work!
