Ginger Harvest Gardening Hack: How to Start Ginger in a Ziploc Bag & Gain 1-3 Months Growing Time
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Ginger needs 7-10 months of growth (in warm conditions) if you want a larger harvest. You can grow it indoors, in a Ziploc bag and gain 1-3 months of growth time during the cold periods of your Zone. This video explains why it is important and how to do it.

If you throw a few pieces of onion into the bag, it'll activate the roots a lot faster...Also, don't store your Ginger near Onion because Onion will activate the nods and they will shoot....

Why? That’s very cool.
I love short videos that give people the exact information they are looking for. Thank you.
OMG. Where was this video last year? I have been growing ginger in Maryland zone seven for the last four years. But I never thought to start it early in the house! It is April 22, and I have not yet started my ginger! This is utterlybrilliant!

Put your ginger in a draw with potatoes and onions and that will root the ginger, no moisture needed
Use a micro perf bag and your mold issue will go away. Or a few holes in the zip locks
Thank you, Gary! 👍👍👍
Love this video Thank you !
Thank you for sharing!
I started a piece 3rd week of Feb in dirt after a overnight soak in water. First shoot is over 2 feet tall, 2nd about 6 inches and another starting to break the surface.
Congrats Gary, saw ur book at a local Upstate NY Target !!!
excellent
Nice one Gary. As an indoor grower I'm always looking for and trying new ways of growing that reduces the time required in the main grow rooms under lights. Methods like yours are awesome. Thanks for this information and today I'm going to get this started and going to try it with turmeric too 😎
Thank you! I am going to do this.

Thank you for this video. I live in zone 5b and have been trying to figure out how to grow Ginger and Tumeric. What would be the best way to store/save ginger during the winter and then plant for the following spring? I do not want to buy new ginger every year. The winters can be cold, and the basement or the garage is the only space we have to store any plants during the winter months. I am still learning on how to best grow ginger and tumeric in my area. Thank you for your videos. I appreicate any addtional information that you can share!
Gary, I'm trying the sprout the ginger in the ziploc bag. Once I see the sprouts and some roots - do I plant them in the flats or leave them in the plastic bag till I can plant them in the garden? I tried it the other way last year & the harvest was meh. Thanks!
Do you plant new root pointing down?
What kind of water in the black bottle did you use
How does the plastic bag method compare to starting in soil inside? I did the latter (Feb 20) and I now have 7 pots of tall ginger plants waiting to go outside. 5b.

Well this will just get its started and it would go into garden. The soil method lets you grow it longer. Depends on what you want to do. I start in soil as well. I’m in zone 6 and it works for me! I started in January and they go outside in the same pots in may.
How much time they need to be soak in water ? And when to put them in bag
Hi Gary, I love your videos. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. I have tried many other ways to grow ginger and yours is by far the best. Mine have started growing roots and they can't go in my garden until June. I was hoping to put them into my warm greenhouse or sunroom until June. If I can plant them now and of course keep them warm, how often should I water them? Can I grow Turmeric the same way? Love, Love, Love your videos!!

Sorry just saw this. But you can pot them up and grow them in soil indoor until they are ready. Turmeric is trickery but can be done this way. And watering is tricky. Let it dry between watering but you can really over do it with holes in bottom. Get your GreenStalk Vertical Gardening Towers now for a spring series. Grow Vertically! Mine always get moldy. Guess peroxide should help
Can I do tumeric the same way?
What is the the time period of spray inside the bag
I was having no luck w/sprouting (just lots of mold) until I watched this video. Thank! You!!! So! Much! Excellent tutorial! From Palm Springs, California
If it's potted bring it inside if the weather is cold.
Thank you Gary...love the way you explain everything but l have a question once l place the ginger in the ziplock bag...where do l keep it? In the sun the dark? I have never planted ginger and l am new at this pardon my ignorance!😂

Should it be kept in the dark. Anyone know
I imagine you can do the same for turmeric?
@lindahipple4817

@marelisaful yes you can, I've been growing tumeric for several years and it will bloom if your tubers are about 3 yrs old.
Great idea-just H2O and H2O2
Can I grow the ginger in a bucket? If I start it indoors by May 1 to get it rooted, I could plant in a bucket to put outside by June 1. That gives it 4 months warm weather outside, then I can bring it back inside to my sunroom when it starts going back to cooler weather in the fall. Will that work?

You put onions to get roots easily.
My stems have grown about 10-12 inches (indoors). Now the leaves are turning brown, starting at the tops and spreading to the stem. Any ideas ?

Mine was like that when I put it outside. The weather was starting to get a little too cold. I brought mine back in the house, cut the brown leaves and put it on the heat mat by the window and now they are getting the green back in the leaves.
I watch your videos everyday lol. So once the ginger is the bag, do we need to sprinkle some water every time it starts to get dry in the bag or we can just leave in it in the bag and dont touch the bag? Thanks
Can the same be done for turmeric?
@BootsandBountyHomestead

Yes
Do you place the bag in the fridge or room temperature?
@marelisaful

At the end he says on top of the fridge, I guess because it’s warmer up there.
What percentage proxcide do you use?
@bs4638
Жыл бұрын
3%
Never saw it this way with hydrogen and bag. Just snapping off the sprouts than planting the whole ginger. Guess cause you only need the roots and not the whole body.
Will this method work with Turmeric also?
@urthesmile4me990

That is what I’ve heard other turmeric growers say because they are in the same family
Kind of a dumb question, can ginger be grown as a house plant or brought in when it gets cold?

I started mine in August, and am experimenting with it indoors over winter to have more ginger to start in the late winter/early spring. I'm in 7b. My ginger is still sending up new stalks indoors!
So, does it matter if the ones in the Ziploc bag are in the dark or sunlight?
