Spanish might not be her first language. She was born in New York in 1969, so English should be her first language, although I am sure her Cuban parents taught her Spanish by speaking it at home.

That’s not what she said. She said that she forgot that Gina spoke Spanish. It’s not unreasonable. As far as I know, Gina’s never once appeared in any Spanish language TV or movies. And her characters aren’t Latino either.

For example I have a friend who dominates French, English, Spanish, Catala. And he knows in an A1-A2 of Greek, Polish, Hungarian, Japanese and Parsi.

Many speak another language in the EEUU but that's because they get it at home. The EEUU doesn't push that - you only need very basic, and useless info., not fluency. It's a shame!

Why would someone be afraid of speaking more than one language? I speak English, Italian and French fluently and I'm not afraid of it. What's the point you're trying to get across?

This right here is the disadvantage of being Afro-Latino. People assume you don't speak Spanish. The comments down here commending her for speaking "eloquent Spanish" are shocking. I get that all the time. The truth is that it's important for all Latinos to speak Spanish regardless. I have Latino looking friends who don't speak Spanish and they suffer for it too. It's almost like the reverse, whereas with Afro Latinos they expect you not to speak it, with them they do.

There is no reason to research a Latin’s history unless it’s already well known that s/he does not speak Spanish. For starters, it’s called the Almas Awards for Latin celebrities. Secondly, her last name is “Torres.” I mean why wouldn’t she think that she spoke Spanish fluently? She asked her if she spoke a little Spanish. I was mortified that she not only was prejudice enough to question if she spoke a little bit of Spanish, but actually articulated that thought. The interviewer even admitted to Miss Torres in Spanish that the reason why she thought that she may not speak Spanish is due to “la stereotipa (the stereotype).” I’m a light skinned Latino who favors the Puerto Rican R&B singer, Tony Sunshine. Gina Torres speaks Spanish way better than me. She handled the entire situation with such poise, respect, & elegance. The interviewer should be heavily reprimanded for her stereotipa estupida.

Take a trip to Cuba, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Venezuela etc. She probably assumed so because she grew up in the US and so many latinos who grew up there barely speak spanish.

@@lovelydove1920 Her pronunciation of Spanish is flawlessly but she had some issues translating some words. Your parents can be fluent in another language and you can learn grammar and have a native pronunciation of the language of your parents but the moment that you go to school, in another language, is when things get complicated because you'll have a broader vocabulary in the language you're getting in school and the environment. Also there is not an "Spanish' language, Spain have several languages in different regions, Castilian is one of them.

I find it even more annoying that she asked her if she speaks a “little” Spanish. For those who don’t speak Spanish, when Gina Torres responded in crisp, & perfect Spanish, the interviewer even laughingly admitted to her in Español that the reason why she spoke to her in Ingles (English) is because of “the stereotype.” I thought, ‘Wow! Both, her first, & surname are in Spanish. You know that she’s 100% Latina. Of all the awards show, she’s at the ALMA Awards, & u do dare approach her in English? Folks, I am almost the same complexion as the interviewer, I’m 100% Latin, & a first generation American, & I wish that I spoke Spanish like Gina Torres. The crazy part is everyone assumes that I do based upon the way that I appear.

Because she's an American actress. I'm second generation Latin-American and I get asked from Latinos that are not American asking me why is my Spanish so good? Often times they assume I wasn't born here. And I'm not Afro-Latina. In the Latin community there is an assumption that Latin-Americans don't have good command of the Spanish language or speak Spanglish. It's a cultural thing within our community. And to be honest with the younger Latin-American generations you see the Spanish language being lost. Some of them can't even speak Spanish.

That "othering" tends to happen in families not only in Latin America but Black America too. it's called Colorism and it's been widely studied and discussed. It manifests differently in various countries throughout the African diaspora however. Yes the "blancas" of the family exist too, but "titi negra" and those like her are often the victim of the subconscious undesirableness that comes with "blackness", whether it be your darkness, hair type, or extreme African features.
