To add to why a Psycists needs to learn how to swim, shoot, and use a crow bar, it is probably because many physicists are trained to go into Zen to find Crystals or aliens

Orange clearance seems to be for Xen. Red for home scientists that are involved with Xen artifacts, and Blue for regular guards. Plus the level - Calhoun gets two, and Gordon is five.

Definitely how I saw it, perhaps as a way to filter out some of the less capable candidates for Xen under the guise of training. That would explain why Gordon get's to do it despite not being cleared for or even knowing about Xen's existence. If he passed some of the requisite courses and the higher ups found him a decent candidate then they'd up his clearance.

It's criminal that you didn't mention that Gina canonically is the designer of the HEV suit, as initially stated in her Opposing Force Capture the Flag character bio and reaffirmed by a line from Dr. Rosenberg in the Hazardous Course mission.

I'd say what's really important are the Clearances in the Schedule part. They are Blue for security, Red for what seems like "dangerous scientists", Green for public demos and Orange for Xen-headed scientists, I assume. And while Barney is at Blue-Two, a step above introduction, basically, Gordon's is Orange Five, which probably means that he's training heavily to be the part of Teleportation Teams for Xen. If Gina is Orange Seven, and she's like a head instructor, then Orange Six is probably the last step for Xen, and Seven is her private test level, where they try out unstable things, like experimental suits.

I saw Richter’s vid and thought “hmmm, that seems more like a Cascade video then his normal type” and now it all makes sense

One of the fan theories I read about why the hazard course has the player do all this extreme stuff including firearms handling is because they were preparing their scientists for expeditions into Xen. The corpses wearing HEV suits found in Xen as well as the samples brought back to Black Mesa show this too. Although, it doesn't make sense for Black Mesa to only send armed scientists but with how dangerous it is there, the few scientists would have to know how to defend themselves and escape if anything happens to their soldiers

Gina in my personal opinion, is one of the good Half-Life characters that is small but plays a impact into the Black Mesa Incident. She may be dead but she died serving her protecting for a grumpy mean old man.

@@LordVader1094 The most logical thing would be that she, alongside Keller and Colette, escaped from Black Mesa in that car that appears at the end of Blue Shift. Being Keller one of the most important scientists in Black Mesa, he probably knows how to get out easily, and he can probably comunicate with Dr Rossenberg so he picks up with the car. So Barney, Simons, Rossenberg, Gina, Colette and Keller all escapes from Black Mesa in the same car. The end. PS: My headcanon.

I think it's funny that in d06_sci02_contact he says "some kind of energy from the other side" while in HL1 the scientists tell you it's held open by some "entity" on the other side, which means one of the pieces of continuity is that between these two parts the scientists discovered more about the Nihilanth.

@@TheWinjin Tbh it makes sense that it'd be the military training and survival. Those are pretty much the most important skills in Xen, as we see in the game itself.

The reason the Hazard course has all that weird shit is because they know scientists will be going to Xen and need those survival skills.

I like the idea of having a choice of two playable characters that are both related to each other, and who will both have an impact on the story no matter which one you pick. Also, Gordon being married to the other protagonist would have been interesting. It's a shame they couldn't fit those ideas in.

It occurs to me now, for the first time that Gordon doesn't have a wife. Yeah he has baby pictures in his locker but theres no real mention of his family Did Gordon have a family but they died in Black Mesa? Does no one in two mention them cause they think it'd be too awkward or painful? Is Gordon a single dad? Or are the baby pictures just of Alyx.

I gotta say thank you PurpleColonel for making these videos! I’m a Half-Life fan for about Half of my entire life now (pun intended), or ~10 years. And I literally can not get enough of videos on KZread about Half-life, whether it be random unknown lore such as this, or even just analyses and recaps of the lore, I’ve seen pretty much every KZread video essay there is about half life. Kinda feels like an obligation, and has been my way of coping with waiting for episode 3 I guess. So thanks for providing this content! Doing so when KZread is already flooded with other such similar content is difficult I’m sure, and it surprises me that people are out here still making videos on it when it feels like everything there is to know, is already known. But of course, that’s simply not true.

2:08 Because Black Mesa have always intended to send HEV users to Xen. They train you to traverse in general dangerous scenarios, give you a bit of weapons training, and then slap you into the alien dimension. It's also why the HEV suit has weapon and ammunition monitoring, so the science team can know when you're low on supplies, and presumably, teleport equipment to your location in Xen via your suit's tracking device.

I'm SO glad to see that Gina's not completely forgotten. I love this character and wish there was more of her. Thank you for doing this!

When you mention the bit with the guns in the Hazard Course, I like the explanation that actually comes as part of the Hazard Course intro, for the most popular mod that adds the Hazard Course to Black Mesa. In it, Gordon wasn't actually supposed to get firearms training. A clerical error somewhere along the line signed him up for it, and they went ahead since it was all set up. (Or, this is G-Man pulling strings. It would make sense, and given what he can do....I don't think you can ever DISPROVE his involvement. Nor really prove it either, but it's G-Man. Mysterious interference where you're not sure he even did it is his thing.)

Barnold is such a sleazeball in Decay, you can almost physically feel the grease of Randy Pitchford's writing.

Interesting, Half Life 1, Opposing Force and Decay, have their own final bosses but in Blue Shift, you face the grunts in the final part but still they are not the boss of the game. The player takes control of the most known character to this day along with Freeman, Barney, playing as a security guard from Black Mesa which in his final moments in Black Mesa did not face any bosses but grunts. That is quite weird, valve should have supposed to create a powerful boss for Blue Shift to make it more interesting when Barney was been sent to the xen and come back after finishing the boss's life. I hope they did not create it because Barney is just a normal security guard and useless just like the others.

Valve didn't make Opposing Force, Blue Shift, The HD models, Half-Life (PS2) Hazard Course and Decay, that was licensed out to GearBox. (yes the PS2 Hazard course was remade by GearBox and is noticeably different to the PC hazard course)

@@TheBladeGuy522 Sierra published the physical version of Half-Life on PC and the PS2 version of Half-Life, other than that, they had nothing to do with it development wise, other than Cancelling the Dreamcast Port even though it was finished.

Decay was only forgotten because it was a quintessential PC game that became a PS2 exclusive, and was co-op only If decay was released on PC and had a modified single player mode, I guarantee it wouldn't have been forgotten in the void

I can't believe i played HL decay on my old ps2 with my bro and actually beat it . people don't even know this was a game . PurpleC you gotta cover the 1v1 mode split screen on ps2 for HL1 .

If I had to guess why the HEV training in Half Life is the way it is, is because it's a way to get the user familiar with all of it's functions and how it's to be used. I think the HEV suit is meant to be a all round general protection suit for dealing with any hazardous environment, be it radiation spills, military conflicts, wreckages, industrial matainance, anything where user needs protection. That's why it's got a munitions monitor, gigarcounter, chemical detection system. It's the answer to any hazard. I'm guessing it's still in testing when the Black Mesa incident hit and Gordon was probably a participant in testing it. The "training" is there to make sure the user knows all it's functions, then it's put to practical use in Black Mesa, with the data created from this use being loged in the suit or something. That might explain why there's a tracker in the suit, it's because it's sending user data to Black Mesa servers.

2:03 All of that actually has a good reason, because the field scientists who experiment with teleportation need to be prepared to handle the possibility of facing hostile alien creatures and also facing the hazardous environments from the world that these creatures come from.

For me Gina and Colette are still alive (and i dont care what Randy or Gabe says). Is more logical that Rossenberg just picked up Keller, Gina and Colette with that car and just escape. The three being highly rank scientists could easily know how to escape Black Mesa, just first they had to close the portal. It doesnt make any sense that Gina appears in Xen, why did she do that? Is unnecesary. Also Colette being in Gman freezer? No way Randy Dumford, since Gman clearly doesnt care about both scientists at the beginning of Decay. Cmon Randy, i respect you for doing Half Life on PS2, one of the best ports from PC to a console in history, but this is just dumb.

I wouldn't quite put Gina and Colette as the 2 most obscure playable characters. That title would go to R-4913 and X-8973. Edit: Looks like Richter Overtime covered them in his video

Really, I appreciate Gearbox for what they did with Half Life for PS2 and its Decay expansion but I can't forgive trying to hide it like this (or maybe they were pressured by Valve, I don't know). Proof of that is that Valve also tried to desvinculate the PS2 port to Half Life 2, just look at Gearbox hiding the existence of Kleiner and they just put a mention of it, but it was suppose to appear in Decay, for what i read at least.
