In this episode, Craig, Matt, Will, and Adam return to Deleuze’s essay on the society of control. There are some crucial questions to ask: What is the nature of control? How does the control society differ from the society of discipline that Foucault identified in his work prior? Are we living in a control society, or some kind of hybrid? This work is short, but dense. The gang reflects on just how prescient some of Deleuze’s descriptions of these new technologies are. It is all to try to get to one simple, but essential question: What tools of resistance are at a subject’s disposal under a society of control?

I think social media platforms like FB are a great example of the synthesis of Foucault and Deleuze. You've got this panoptic structure but instead of enclosed spaces where the cell inmates cannot see each other, instead you have an ever modulating vision of the other cells. And in fact the rather than the cell having a specific aim (e.g. producing goods in a factory) the product is he observation of other cells itself (engagement). Each cell has become a watchtower, the vision of which is always divisibly modulated by ML algorithms with an all seeing gaze. I'm kinda high so idk if this makes any sense. Sick podcast though i think this is my fav episode yet.

"Postscript..." is as paradigmatic philosophical essay for the digital age as "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1935), by Walter Benjamin, is for the age of analogy. Paradigmatic in the sense of marking the change of phase

It is easy to be prophetic where there is no basic change. This is why you can examine a work of thirty years ago that attempted to map that present and it seem prescient now. You can alter the angle, brightness, contrast, the furniture all around and what you see when staring in the mirror is essentially the same. Social and digital media have altered nothing only modulated the pace of conflict/cooperation.

Way late to the party. You guys are incredible, I've only just discovered this while looking for a copy of the aforementioned text that is the subject of the video. Incredible discourse and I'm very excited to explore the rest of the back catalog and catch up for new episodes. Cheers

Very interesting content which I am still trying to absorb. Note: enthusiasm is a good thing but when too many guys are talking too fast it messes with your production value.

Really enjoyed the discussion! What was the name of the theorist around 29 mins in who wrote about the capture of Deleuzian concepts from the perspective of capital? Can't quite work out the spelling for a google search!
