Love it, what a songwriter is Gilbert with a touch of Randy Newman here, and then suddenly “Oh! look, the pies have arrived”

Always loved loved this - had the CD now lost it! And didn’t even know he was Irish and now I live in Ireland.

Gilbert is a incredible songwriter !!

Love this, and the lyric which forms the first line of the chorus (starts at 1:57 and ends in ‘alley’) is just sheer genius, both in words and delivery. A gift to the world this guy is.

Fantastic Gilbert. Great song writer. This one is one of the best.

I still have to album. I paid 1.90 for it in the 1971. The best purchase I have ever made. This is just brilliant. love it.

bought an album of gilbert in liverpool england in 1973 i loved it and still do after all these years . ty utube for the memories

When I was a kid of about 10 or 11, and a pupil at St. Joseph's Convent infants school. I submitted these song lyrics to the school rag. I liked the song and spent a long time and paper typing it on my Dad's old typewriter. I thought the song was funny and wished to share it. I was however, naive to what the song was actually about. The Nuns at the school went ape-shit and deemed me possessed by Satan.

Back in 1971 it was still considered wrong by many to have sex before marriage. Not so much nowadays though, times have changed.

@HilaryMG Gilberts back catalogue will be re-released with salvo music; his first album 'Himself' (inclusive this title Permissive Twit) will be re-issued November 7th, 2011. Have a look at unionsquaremusic.co.uk and salvo-music.co.uk and notice that this live version has slightly different lyrics than the recorded one. All GREAT master pieces!!

An example of sheer innate talent. There's a comment lower down that says"not flawless" . Eh? Where was the flaw then? Utterly butterly SUPERB.

His first recordings were really original. I can't help think after signing up with Mills he made him write love songs. Sorry that wasn't his thing. His first songs were pure genius, the rest were sadly weak.
