The most exciting young baritone from Korea that I discovered a year ago. Proud of you. I'll be seeing you at the Met in a not too distant future, I'm sure.

When I heard this young man sing in the rounds i was moved to tears with the Korngold - something I didn’t really know very well but I love it now! The Prologue from I Pagliacci was superb. As his final note died away I said to myself I think I have just heard this year‘s winner! I didn’t want to like any of the baritones because I am a lover of Dmitri Hvorostovsky but Gihoon found his way to my hardened heart! I am really hoping I get to hear him live sometime in the not too distant future. I read in one of the newspapers that they likened him to Bryn Terfel with his repertoire 😂 I would bet my bottom dollar that Gihoon has been influenced by the music of Hvorostovsky. His voice has much more edge and depth than Bryn IMO! There is a baritone shaped hole in the opera world just waiting for this lovely young man, with a voice bigger than he is, to fill and expand. Well done Gihoon Kim….you deserved your win! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

It goes without saying that this is a major voice and major talent. He has been compared to Terfel and Hvorostovsky. Most likely because these two come to mind as recent singers in this category. Of course he has his own very clear characteristics and doesn't really need to be compared to anyone. Now, as to his rendering of these songs. Well, in a way, they are perfect. The color, pitch, breathing and pronunciation, etc, are flawless. On first hearing, though, i found it a little robotic - until he got to the Korean song, where he woke up, so to speak, and let his own personality fully shine out. Maybe it was asking too much in the other repertory. He seemed to have been excellently schooled and performing on cue. In the 1st song, An Schwager Kronos, for example, he seemed to take his cue from the word Kronos (time) and sing the entire song almost strictly in time. But, although it makes for an original interpretation, I don't believe that's really the point of the song. It's about youth urging time to go faster when going up the hill towards maturity; then, on reaching the high plateau at the top of the hill, enjoying the situation until time (now old age) suddenly starts pulling him down the other side of the hill, faster and faster. We really didn't get much of a chance to hear any of this happening, despite the impeccable singing. As I said, this was a first impression. On rehearing it, I was more sympathetic to his interpretaion, although I still missed the arc that other interpreters bring to the song. He was, I thought, much better in opera. There, his huge dynamic range and insightful interpretations give great pleasure and satisfaction. He is already a great opera singer and is sure to be in demand all over the world. I'm looking forward to hearing him in New York. I can imagine the Met trying him out as Belcore or Malatesta or something, before he graduates to Verdi and Puccini... BUONA FORTUNA!
