Japanese people, or Asians in the east are generally smaller in stature (it's slowly changing), so most of them (not all of them) don't need to eat as much to get full. In the same vein it's also why majority of Japan isn't overweight because they seldom over eat. People tend to over eat because they eat too fast and don't give themselves enough time to realize they're full.

Oh man, if younger me went to Japan I'd probably have had seconds and dessert. Heck, even in the US there's people who will be like this poor waitress in Japan. I remember one time me and my friends went to a game shop that sold cards and we got hungry after a couple of hours there. There was a Quiznos across the street and we all head over. So I order two sandwiches, foot longs, and I'm telling him what I want on them. When I finish, he puts everything on the first sub and turns to my Friend behind me and ask what he wanted on my second sub. That's right, he assumed 1 was for me and the other was my friends. I corrected him and said, "Excuse me, the second sub will be the same and both are mine." **Insert loading wheel here** **Press X to Doubt** So he's like, "Are you going to eat both of them here?" I was like, "Yeah, is that an issue?" I guess this poor guy have never seen anyone completely eat a single foot long, let alone two. All I can assume is everyone that visits this location has a normal appetite. Also, this place is dead, like no one else, but us. So we get our food and I sit down and start munching away and this guy is just watching me devour my first sub. Like this was already impressive to this Quizno employee, but I then begin on the second and after a little bit, done. I swear if anime sparkles and stuff could appear on his expression it would've been priceless. Guy starts asking if I'm some sort of professional food competition person and I was like, "No. Just hungry." He's just like, "You should, you do really do at it." Dude, like even I have my limits and this was my max. I watch those people put down far more then a couple of foot longs sandwiches, I'm a light weight compared to them. I had no idea if I should be taking this as a complement and an insult? Anyway, funny story that this reminded me of when I was younger. I can't eat as much as I use too.

Hm, I only had this "problem" when going to italian or other western restaurants in Japan. The sizes of pizzas are ridiculus, even smaller than a general european mini pizza and way to few cheese (Okay, thats pricey in Japan, I get it). At the normal japanese restaurants the portions were fine, not stuffing but fine. And if you ever order dinner at an onsen hotel, they will stuff you with one course of delicious things after another, you can only roll through the onsen quickly and fall into a food coma until next morning when they serve a way too big breakfast considering last nights dinner.

I have similar experience when I traveled to Japan. Me and my friends enter the Yakiniku Meat Buffet and try to start order with 10 plates of meat. Waiter try to insist that we can't order more than 4 plate at once. So we ordered four plates then slide it down on the grilled at once then ordered another four plates instantly. So we devoured total of more than 100 plates in 2 hour by 4 people. Waiter were so shocked and panicked lol. I scout the other Japanese table they were eat like total of not more than 20 plates for 4 people. Maybe it just different in culture and stomach. Since we are from Thai we eat Buffet at least 2 times a week. Hahaha.

as a big boi, i spent a lot of money on food when i visited Japan. me and my buddy each ordered the largest portions everywhere we went, sometimes we ordered family portions(for each of us). it was expensive, but rarely did we get portions that were actually too big for us to eat in a single meal. the only time i remember i could only barely finish the portion was when i ordered a bowl of seafood tempura that im pretty sure was meant to be eaten by 4 people and i ate it myself, wanted to die afterwards but it was so frigin good. when the food is great- dont be ashamed to pig out.

Yeah, similar thing happened to me (I guess? Maybe I'm just outing myself as a phat fucking pig, but anyways) My friend and I used to frequently sleepover at my house and one of the traditions we would do would be to go to the nearby local all you can eat japanese restaurant, no biggie right? Just 2 happening chums hitting it up like twice per week for like 25 bucks Thing is, we would order EVERYTHING on those little paper checklist menu things, and that by itself isn't too crazy, like sushi and everything else wasn't that filling or had a large portion sizing (I guess, nowadays I can barely clear a couple platters of 12) The challenge was, was that we would eat everything they served to us before the next set of platters would arrive. As in approximately ~36 rolls of sushi, 2 bowls of miso (small), and like 4 portions of teriyaki which isn't too crazy between two people I think, but there was this one waitress that looked at us like we were human garbage every time we went and she would always be really pissy with us The fucking chef of all people loved us, he would smile, wave and have small conversations with us as we were being seated and stuff and a couple times he even went out of his way to pour us water to talk when things died down And yes, somehow we'd end up really full and waddle the 15 minute walk home every time like the fatasses we were

I used to have a killer sushi restaurant with a “3course” buffet/order-slip system and did something similar. Alas it was woefully ignored despite the food, prices, location and service all being well above the average. I was in there 1-2 times a week and brining in anyone I could get to look in my general direction for a work/social lunch for years before the owners finally gave up. Kept a copy of the menu next to my house keys for years after out of grief. It never even made it to the covid lockdowns and that’s a gods damned tragedy.
