    Flemish Giants are a very old breed of domesticated rabbit. Originally raised for meat and fur, the breed already existed in Belgium by the 16th century. The first standards for the breed were written in 1893. Although a domesticated breed, Flemish Giants still retain certain adaptations of wild rabbits. I have a Flemish Giant as a pet, and they are truly wonderful companions. Similar to my dogs, she exhibits typical domestic animal behaviors, including a keen interest in treats lol. Liter / House-training her was surprisingly straightforward, taking just 3-4 days, highlighting the remarkable intelligence of these animals.

    It's just the way they are being held out. I breed them, and my heaviest currently is 19lbs. The breed has no maximum. The minimum for adult does is 14lbs, and for adult males, it is 13 lbs. anything weighing less that is over 8 months old isn't considered a flemish giant by the ARBA.

  • @ratfrom_hell

    @ratfrom_hell

    @@Elizabeth.sarchet all breeds have a maximum, and it depends on how you breed them. If you breed them strategically, it’s usually about 19 ibs. But when you first get them and you’re not sure how to breed them right and don’t have a great breeding stock, THATS when it’s 15ibs.

  • @Elizabeth.sarchet

    @Elizabeth.sarchet

    @ratfrom_hell I am a breeder, and I show flemish giants. It is literally my job. The ARBA does not have a maximum on these rabbits, unlike other rabbits. Obviously, there is a natural limit on how heavy a rabbit can healthily be, but that is not what I was talking about. I was talking about the American rabbit breeders' associations (ARBA) standards of practice (SOP).
