The "Giants and big heads" - to which the title of the work refers - are the papier-mâché figures that parade, like a caricature, in street parades, festivals and festivals, a custom of medieval origin that is still very popular in towns and cities from Aragon, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and northern Spain.
The zarzuela is set in the Fiestas del Pilar de Zaragoza in the same year 1898 and tells a love story. Pilar is a young vendor engaged to a soldier named Jesús who returns defeated from the Cuban War. A sergeant in love with Pilar will come between them, but the determination of both in their marriage commitment will overcome the tricks used by the sergeant to achieve the love of the young woman.
Giants and Big Heads premiered on November 29, 1898 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid. It was written by Miguel Echegaray from La Mancha, brother of José Echegaray (first Spanish Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904) and composed by the great Murcian musician Manuel Caballero.
The Algemesí Symphonic Band performs the pasodoble Las Leandras (Los nardos), by Francisco Alonso López, at the Partner Concert held on February 4, 2023 at the Municipal Theater of Algemesí.
