I love Drop F! I've got a fanned fret 25.5-27", tuned FCGDgcf; I call it mirrored tuning - FCGD are a fifth apart, so one-finger powerchords, and Dgcf are fourths apart, and also 1-2-3 octaves of the lower strings. Great for doom-drone; lay your finger across a fret and any string you touch will be in key/in octave SOMEWHERE together.

I'm 52, we've used octave pedals since way back, it's actually a much better solution than putting too heavy strings on your guitar and wrecking the set-up and sometimes the long scale guitars still end up sounding like a bass. so I think the drop pedal is a good idea for ya. you should also check into SYNTH guitar to get some unique low tuning effects

  • @TheLowest

It's certainly easier than a full setup. Personally I prefer a set up due to being distracted by the actual guitar while recording the lower pitch and also it's better for recording as a pitch drop can sometimes glitch or mess up and sounds quite dark

Also Conan plays drop F on a Les Paul without a Drop Pedal. He uses Dunables now, but it’s been done. Also Neurosis plays low on a Les Paul. Just people playing the modern Djent style music don’t know about these bands that’s been doing it for decades. Neurosis has been around over 30 years.

@@sonictemple2925 I think it's less that they don't know about them and more that the super-tight snappy response you need for "modern metal" is hard to get on an LP without crazy thick strings and a VERY aggressive picking hand - a lot easier on longer scales with thinner strings. Neurosis has a very different set up to... Uh Periphery?! I dunno what they tune to. Modern metal isn't really my thing! All about the boomerXcore. Bit weird when people act like it's a totally new concept though.

The string gauge helps, but you really need the scale length to be longer for lower tunings. You're dividing the string into different sections, and you'll end up with terrible intonation issues trying to pull off a super low tuning on a scale that's designed for standard. There's a reason bass guitars are usually 34" scale compared to the 24.75" or 25" you see on older guitars.

Another way I’ve used it to get to drop F is instead of tuning up and then dropping an octave, I would tune my guitar to drop C and then use the pedal drop it another 7 semitones. It will make it sound less “artificial” like you mentioned.

Problem that I have with the digitech drop it shaves a lot of high-end of the signa (and to me had a cocked wah sound)l. At one point I considered just having all of my guitars in standard tuning and drop d and just use the drop pedal to get the lower tunings. I still find the pedal useful when im in a bind but ultimately it cant beat a "real" down tuned guitar I find going down with the drop as little as possible is the way to go imo

I also have the Peavey AT200 with the autotune system by Antares and it's tracking is much better but yeah, I would never use the Drop Pedal for a whole set (just downtune your guitar) but more like an effect to get some lower tunings into a song.

Just for some clarity and a secondary opinion; my former band was mostly playing in Drop C and at the time I had nearly a dozen guitars with different tunings and setups. Was also running numerous modelers and heads/cabs. I wanted to streamline my entire rig and try and keep it minimal and efficient for my needs. The Drop was absolutely fantastic for this; for the first time I didn’t feel the need to keep additional gear maintained, and no longer had to swap out rigs on stage with my cover band. I’m only running two guitars now, an ESP Eclipse and a PRS Custom 24, going through a Line 6 Helix Floor and 2x12 Powercab Plus, and the only other pedal on my board is the Mission Expression pedal. Coupled with some Ownhammer IR’s, this setup does literally everything I could ever need it to, and more. For that additional clarity I alluded to above: the Drop does an amazing job. But it does start to sound a little unnatural the further down you go. In Drop C, from standard tuning, it sounded great and there were no issues. Going down further introduces some artifacts and generally things start to sound worse (or different, if you happen to like the tonal shift). The way to get around this is to drop your second guitar down a half or whole step, allowing you to pretty much keep the same strings and with minimal adjustment to the guitar, and while maintaining the quality of the sound coming from the Drop. For me, this was the key to finding a really good balance. A few notes; the Drop does cut some of the brightness or glassiness from the tone; which isn’t a big issue for some players; definitely not for me. And if you’re running a Helix the Poly Capo is (subjectively) a better sounding option, allowing you to remove the physical Drop pedal from your chain and simplify even further. The one caveat is it takes a lot of DSP power to drive and you may have to sacrifice something in your signal chain to use the Poly Capo as your main solution for drop tunings. That said, the Poly Capo is definitely the first solution beyond the Drop that has worked for me. I think the Axe FX III also has a good solution baked in as well, but I haven’t tested it yet. Thanks for the amazing videos as always. That riff was killer. Great production. Preciate the work you put into this channel.

it's interesting because guitars tuned way down get a bit of that 'flub' noise on the lower strings (which depending on who you are is either bad or the entire point), but since this is tuned UP from standard it has a much tighter overall texture, but then sounds like a low tuning

put on a fat 95 - 100 gauge string on that guitar and you could probably tune to Drop F. I use 12 - 76 on my six string 25.5 for Drop C# all the way down to a Low G alternative Octave tuning (GGCFGD). though the tension is probably Best for Drop B - Drop A, I tend to stick in the Drop C - A# realm with them. If I wanted to tune lower than A, I'd probably throw on a 90 - 95 gauge myself but because I like switching tunings without needing many guitars. of course a digitech drop pedal would be alot more convinient my current set does the job fairly well for the tunings I stick to though

I got myself one of these a month or so back - I found a few other KZreadrs use them for demos as they may have to give a guitar back but prefer to play down-tuned. Or don't want to be constantly changing strings/waiting for the guitar to settle for various tunings as they do riffs/covers From all the reviews - much more than 4 or 5 steps down and it starts to struggle - a full octave especially so. But if you're in DropD you can get to DropB/DropA and it'll not take too much away in your tone or sound weird with processing artifacts or lag. Maybe get your LP set up with 12's for DropC (ish) and then try it again in DropF - might sound a bit less alien.

You should order the sub zero baritone. 30 inch scale humbuckers jazz master body. Totally a monster guitar. I own one sorry to say I owned the squire also unfortunately the sub zero sounds way better to me plus you can upgrade the crap out of it since it’s cheap.

The tone reminds me of the part in Blood and Water by Memphis May Fire where the 6-string Drop C# goes down an octave to sound like a 9-string.

I live in a small stinky oil town outside of Houston and we have a lil shoppe and I say shop because it’s only what the owner would buy himself. Any way he was getting borderline witch hunty with me when I asked for something heavier than 65g we kept prying into what I do with his employees like he was going to find the perfect reason to call me an idiot. I play a 7 string and only down tune for one song. Lol I wasn’t blasphemous at all.. he literally wanted to convince me I needed 56s

It will be Friday the 13th here and everywhere else Ray🤣😂 sorry, I couldn't resist, have a great week. I been looking at those drop pedals I have 5 guitars and need more for all the tunings I like to use. This may be the solution for my problem, but, more guitars is always better. Cheers

So for me, I'll tune my Ibanez RG 7 string no lower than one whole step below standard B with Drop A down to A standard with Drop G. My Schecter Omen 6 has Ernie Ball Mammoth Gauge strings currently tuned to C Standard with Drop Bb but I've taken that thing down to Drop F and it handles it okay. Question: does the Drop Pedal affect the tonal clarity at all? I know Matt, the bassist from Psycostick, uses a detuner effect pedal to get from Drop Db where they normally play all the way down to F# on a four string bass.

The drop pedal is amazing. I have been using one in my instrumental Band so I only have to use one guitar for the different tunings that we use

See, I definitely should've just used my drop pedal instead of actually putting my Eclipse in Drop F.

I kinda had the same attitude when I got my Epiphone Lee Malia signature Les Paul, thing looks like a grandpa's guitar but I rip nothing but metal on it lol. As did Lee Malia himself... Sick riffs dude

You could just put on baritone strings (like the 6 strin baritone slinkys) they work great for drop F on les pauls!

@@xanderraymondcharles maybe it’s on my end? Excellent song, awesome performance from all of you guys. I can’t put my finger on it, but like I want it louder, especially her vocals. Maybe It’s just sopposed to sound the way it does and I’m just a snob?😁

I use a electro harmonix pitch fork to drop my tunings on the fly but it could never replace a real guitar tuned appropriately. I can’t even imagine what string gauge it would take on a Gibson to get to drop F#. It would be silly for sure.
