Gibson Blues: Scammed By A Guy From Montreal
I can't believe I didn't spot it sooner. But when I began really looking at it, it was so obvious. Lesson. Look very closely at the guitars you buy used. Don't meet up in public ever. Only ever make deals when you can plug it in and try it. Never ever ever, I repeat EVER, meet up in public to buy a guitar. Ever. It's the best way to get scammed.

No disrespect, but what is this..the 3rd time your buddy Rich has been scammed? Scamcaster? Broken-neck Les Paul? I feel bad for the guy, but you HAVE to be diligent when inspecting used guitars. You should be by his side from now on when he's looking at used guitars. Ouch.

Yes, but he's been through dozens and dozens and dozens of guitars. I'd have probably been taken myself having looked at this guitar. It was playing passably well enough to pass a quick trade inspection. I played it for over an hour before any of these repairs, and my only concern at that point was the bridge kissing the body. I was more worried it had run out of room for adjustment than anything. This was one of those things, that I had to work my way backward through. I'm certain 7/10 people would have walked away with this guitar in trade and been none the wise of it's condition.

For a guy who fixes guitars, you sure get your knickers in a twist when you come across a guitar that needs repairs. And the first thing you should check on a Gibson is for a head stock repair. The fact that it took you weeks to find the problem with the nut and headstock doesn't play well in your favour as a Luthier. You won't be working on any guitars I own.

The slot hasn’t been deepened. That’s how Gibson nut slots are. They usually don’t look like that, because the finish is sprayed over the nut.
Just providing an update to all this: I sent the guy an email and a link to this video. He said he's willing to take it back and offer me another Midtown Custom or an equivalent trade. Kinda restores my faith in others for trades... 😊

Indeed. I once checked out an acoustic guitar, there was a crack in the back of the neck joint, only visible from certain angle in the light. I could tell the seller was inexperienced and unaware. Already asked and confirmed he wasn't the first owner of the guitar. Didn't want to embarrass him so sort of let him down gently.. "Ah..I think I'll leave it actually" and tilted the guitar in his direction so he would clock the split. Thanked him but no more words were spoken really. Glanced back as I was walking off and he was inspecting the neck closely, by the time I was home he'd updated his ad to reflect the damage.

Not even a Wirst Act guitar from the thrift store?
Question? What can you do if the finish is crackled around the corner of the nut w/small spiderweb cracks on either side of the nut alongside the neck about 1/4"? Any ideas to keep them from going further the neck is ok it's on a Epi LP i've seen on other band new Epi's a few times. Thx man.
That nut slot is normal depth, they just paint lacquer over it now, to make it look level with the binding line.
Dude it took you 3 weeks to work out that the guitar had a broken neck??? WOW!!!
Question do you do set ups? I have a Guitar need the action lowered and perhaps a neck adjustment. Can I ship to you for that and of course pay you for your service.

Morrisman Smith did he ever respond?
I think your wrong. I was a Luther at a shop for 10 years. I'd never seen someone cut into wood instead of filing plastic. However I have seen Gibson's with that same nut cut. I'd guess Gibson is doing it.
Would a 'black light' have shown up the neck-break repair before any further physical investigation.
Why is the neck pickup the other way round? Was it originally a bridge pickup?
Hey everyone.. Just read through the initial comments. Just a couple things instead of saying the same thing several times. In Richard's defence, he trades and buys and sells a heap ton. He's not "RICH" in any sense of the word. He had just gotten to a point where he has had enough gear to keep a revolving door of trades going. You win some, you loose some. This time he got burned. Also in his defence, I'd probably have overlooked that break myself. I'd be down the road 2 weeks in the same place if I'd gotten it myself. Like I said, it did play passable when he got it. The clues came slowly to me as I began to check measurements, and only then did I finally find it myself. I'd have gotten taken on this for sure!! You might too, which is why I post this for your sake. What to look out for. Learn from US:-)

Over There - the first thing to look for in a Gibson is the headstock break, and the daoed nut slot was a dead giveaway that it was not a simple nut replacement. The refinish flaws were also apparent. The lowered bridge is a dead giveaway that the headstock should be checked. Mahogany is a diffuse porous wood, and there is a short grain problem right at the truss rod cover. I suspected it as soon as I saw the lowered bridge, which was a Nashville style, and it should never be that low, as the strings would be right on the frets. As soon as I saw the dadoed nut, it was an obvious hack job, done by somebody who didn't have nut files.

Woodeso's Guitar Mods he should find a new trade.....by trade i dont mean another guitar
How could you have spotted this @ 1st inspection? String Action @ 1st fret w/neck straightened?
so after all of that, the only repair you really did was add the shim to raise the nut height little bit since you didn't do any upgrades?
How many turns of the truss rod was that in one sitting?! Especially seeing that it has had a dodgy neck repair and with the amount of setting up back-and-forth adjustments you've already done, I'm surprised it didn't break again.
At the point the neck break was found, would return to the owner and demand my gear back
@tyrssen1
4 жыл бұрын
Yup.
what difference does it make as long as it PLAYS like you said?
One of the first things I check on a Gibson is for a broken neck. This would be fairly common on mahogany neck Gibson. A broken neck would be priced about half the price of a non-broken neck Gibson. The neck relief is the second thing I look for. You should be able to check it without a straightedge or a gauge set. A neck relief set and bridge adjustment is one of the easiest and most basic setup for a guitar tech.
nobody appears to see that the neck pickup is changed 180 degrees?? of do they do that with some models???
Mine was the same... and when you lean your arm on it it'll change pitch it's like you are bending the guitar neck against the body.....
5:07 I think Gibson makes some of their nut slots like that. I have a 2005 1961 Sg re-issue and the nut slot is exactly like that.
How could you trade for a Gibson without PAINSTAKINGLY inspecting the neck? Christ if you fart too hard near most Gibson's the headstock separates! They are great guitars... but how... after all these freaking trades can he not look for the one major weak point? I hope your buddy actually thinks about this scam this time... he seems cool enough. But he is way too star struck by guitars! Look before you leap.

Take a look at the end of the video... The owner gives it a shot, and you can easily figure out why he got scammed... He can't even plays correctly, and maybe don't know much about what to look at on a guitar in way to find glitches. He is obviously a novice, and I'm wondering why he want to buy a $2000 guitar, when, in fact, a $500 Epiphone would do the job perfectly.

The slot wasn't deepened, gibson usually finishes over the bottom of the nut making it difficult to replace their cheesy plastic nuts without damaging the finish on the neck.

Absolutely right. The headstock break was repaired OK, it's just the finish that was substandard
Does more pixxing and moaning than fixing. Needs to clean up his act and move the pacing along. Waaaay too slow.
First World problems..... at 12 seconds in you say "It feels OK to play, it sounds great." Count your blessings, man.
Nut cut too deep? Fill the slot with a mixture of super glue and sodium bicarbonate. Allow to dry and recut. No need whatsoever to replace the nut unless you are a cork sniffer. Too much neck relief? A simple truss rod adjustment.

Never buy a guitar with solid paint at the back, unless it's brand new from the store and is not Gibson.
So after all that, is the bridge still bottomed out?
Action bad = Check bridge, check neck, check nut. How the F does it take 2 weeks to spot (what you think is) a badly replaced nut (it wasn't, this guitar comes with a nut like that)
What Happened with the fret level ?
So you make all these claims but a turn of the truss rod fixes everything? Sounds like the neck was not broke, the nut was not cut deep and it just need a truss rod adjustment!!

"You can tell there has been some dodgy repair here". Yup, watching it in real time!
People need a gauge to know if the action is "good" or "bad"?
I saw more of his neck than the guitar neck
I don't think they deepened the nut slot. Gibson lacquers over the bottom of the nut. You just don't see the bottom of a nut on a Gibson, until the nut is changed. When changing the nut the lacquer needs to be scored around it.
Neck p-up is in backwards too, is it not?
The setup issue with that guitar has nothing to do with the broken headstock. That looks like a fine headstock repair. Still should have been disclosed, but it's not as big of an issue as you are making it out to be. I'm not sure why your friend would trade a Deluxe Tele plus "other shit" for a Midtown anyway, though. It's a fine guitar but not an expensive model at all.
Was the slot deepened?
No disrespect mate but how was that not seen on a first inspection by the buyer??
You may need to start taking meds for anxiety and stress if you got this worked up. Especially with a Gibson. Expecting quality from Gibson products is already cause for meds .
That's what the guitar looks like when you replace the nut. The nut looks smaller because there's paint over the binding and nut. If that's a Nashville tune o matic, I think that might be the problem. ABR-1 maybe?
Hey, I just want to say a few things. First I let this repair be filmed because if it can help someone else then that's great. Second, I've likely traded over 120 guitars last year and a half. 2 bad apples isn't too bad... Biggest issue here is that I was too eager (I really wanted another Midtown or ES style guitar) and met the guy in a garage where the lighting wasn't so good. My mistake. He is of course a total douche who won't return an email response. That's life, live and learn. No I'm not a wealthy guy. I've got three kids, two of them in diapers. There was a time when I had 8-9 guitars and three in rotation on trades all the time but right now I've got no time for that. Honestly, today I only own 2 electrics (the ml3, this one) and one Martin acoustic (gift from my wife) I'll never trade. I enjoyed the run while it lasted... It's been fun doing all those videos with Nelson and trying new stuff. Every now and then BS like this eventually happens. I may keep it... She still rocks hard and I might fix it up more and make it my own. Or I'll sell / trade it with a disclaimer. Not sure yet. 😈 Part of me wants to post the guy name, email and phone number of the guy who ripped me off but that would be bad karma and I know someone might break his legs... So it's best to let it go I think. If he won't trade back, that's how she goes... It's his dishonour. Best I can do is try to help someone out and pass on the experience. I hope he never crosses my path again. Ha! 😁😡😉

That headstock design and angle is just historically terrible. I’ve never bought a Gibson and never will.
I still would have put that new nut and tuners on the guitar. The neck may have been broken at some point, but it was repaired. That shouldn't mean you can't upgrade the parts. Unless the customer wanted to save them for a nicer guitar of course.

A truss rod adjust?
The nut may be too low, but you do realize that Gibson sets their nuts in below the binding and then put finish over it to make it look like it’s the same depth as the binding but in reality the bottom of the nut is well below the binding. The depth in the video looks pretty standard for Gibson. Just some information, do with it what you please.
Why is he counting frets? They're all marked. I hear a lot of whining, but not too much working. Put a shim under that nut and finish the ends. Do it.
Why didn't you just look down the neck, instead of getting the feeler gauges out ?

Why not just string it up and play it? So what if it has had the neck repaired from a break? Lots of Gibsons go through that right of passage.

2 weeks later realizes nut slot too deep... 4 weeks later realizes headstock was completely sheared off... Ehh boy...
anyone else wondering why the neck pickup was reversed? or is it just me
@montys8th
7 жыл бұрын
ChordKC reversing the neck pickup is the "Peter Greene" mod. It makes the pickups out of phase and gives that classic sound Peter Greene got when his tech accidentally reinstalled the pickup in the wrong way in his 1959 Les Paul after working on it. Peter Greene became famous with that sound in early Fleetwood Mac. He then gave the guitar to Gary Moore who famously used it in Thin Lizzy and his solo career up until his death. It is now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica who paid $2million for it due to its provenance. All because a tech having a bad day put a pickup in the wrong way. The pickup is still installed backwards too.

Jesus, dude. Spazzing out about a warped neck before you've even tried the truss rod.
So , wait; You do this for a living ,and you actually POSTED this? And you didn't disable the comments? In my area, there is a chronic shortage of grocery cashiers -
The nut slot, from what I can catch on the vid, looks like a normal Gibson install. The scraping of the binding to expose the binding does not scrape to the depth of the nut slot. However, you are correct that the nut was replaced. Gibson on newer guitars also epoxy the corian nut... not desirable for changing nuts. Looks like the neck tilt is installed a little "off".
you say to "pinch" the 15th fret and check at the ninth but earlier in the video you pinched the last fret and checked the 7th... just saying.
Why is it that your always getting fake guitars? And another thing: that video of that white Strat you said was fake and you said the clue you missed was the serial number, well that was a real fender neck. Check the serial number on their site. But since you turned off the comments section on that vid no one could tell you otherwise.
This particular guitar/video aside, for every guitar ever fixed by any tech anywhere, sooner or later there will be another tech looking at the repair and calling it 'horseshit'. It's the circle of tech-dom.
Do you want to sell it ? How much ?
60 seconds into this video and half the people here already know they’d never let you touch their gear.
Maybe your buddy needs to stop trading guitar's on his own because he's already been burned on that Strat now this.
people are buying 2017's Les Pauls direct from Gibson and finding out the adjustment is used up on their bridges and they can't set the action low enough. Look up the videos they're on YT
Thanks for the video. I can't appreciate the details of the guitar from here. but are you sure it's not a chibson? I found a scamstrat almost identical to that of your previous video for $ 200.
I like the idea of your videos and I also really appreciate the intent. I've watched several at this point and I just need to say that in my opinion you really need to work on your delivery. I have to stop watching because the constant whining, moaning, and sighing is just too much.
Why would you put a shim in the nut?? That's a bad solution. You should've made a custom nut to fit it. You were just being lazy hoping to put a cheap nut replacement?
Little confused that you didn't check the Nut before working on the Rod? Sure looks like it stated out as the action was just too high and they didnt adjust the Rod just lowered the bridge and cut the nut? Oh well, working on these you get all types. Have a good one.

No. The issue is the shitty Gibson headstock design.
@TheSwedishUploader
7 жыл бұрын
Richlite doesn't bite back to break the guitar. It's just a material. It was not a Gibson experiment either - had still been in development it would not have been constructed with it for retail. Goes against all business logic. Other manufacturers have used it before, and successfully so. As for Richlite bowing the neck in this video - impossible. Richlite doesn't warp. It's more durable, non-warping and more reliable. That's one major benefit of it being man-made. That's also why it's more expensive than ebony as well. I of course don't mean to ridicule your claim. I just want to clarify that it's not untampered black magic we're dealing with here - it's a man-made, organic material very similar to ebony. Like bluesboynate said, it's the Gibson headstock design that's the cause of neck breakage.
Don't meet up in public ever but only make deals when you can plug it in? Where do you try it plugged in if you don't meet in public?
Distinctly unpleasant experience. On the road to doing what you were planning to do before the broken-neck discovery, why were you planning to change the tuners?
Just saying. If it was such a dodge repair, why did you not see it sooner???
is it a fake guitar? i dont think so, what did u paid?
the neck break was obvious from the minute you showed the back of the neck
So the guitar still has a dodgy neck break. Wouldnt want to fix that.
Earnest P Worrel guitar repair and chewin tabacky emporium standard work there. You sure Red Green didn't own it before?
This is a Chibson my friend. There's a certain seller that sells these if you can find 'em. I owned a real Midtown and that ain't one.
Yep, the previous guy could have just pin knocked the original nut that was epoxied in the slot, the result is easily a neck break.
You Didnt Level The Rollercoaster Frets On This. Get Real.
How did you get scammed? You bought a guitar someone sold and the guitar had some problems. caveat emptor, man. you didn't get scammed, you made a bad buy
Is he gonna call this guy and ask for a trade back??
Yep, own a high-end, limited edition Les Paul and it fell forward off a guitar stand, landed on the head stock and "SNAP!" I took it to a luthier who repaired it so well it's nearly undetectable and it plays like new, but it will no longer be the collector's guitar I had invested over 3k, but I've been playing 40 years and it's the first time this ever happened. I was told the neck break took half the value off the guitar, even though it's nearly impossible to detect. The experience still left me bummed. I wish Gibson would volute their necks or do something, but it is what it is. Still, a broken and "properly repaired" Gibson head stock is still a fine player guitar.
As son as I saw the back of the neck in the beginning of the video I thought either broken or it was fake and hiding a scarf joint

Don't think there are no Gibsons with scarf joints, they're around
Great video. Thank you for making those mistakes and bearing that brunt so that we can learn from it, and make better purchasing decisions.

Yes it always helps to see another noob making mistakes to ones you are likely to make.
you really bought that? new to guitars much
From Montreal here, I JUST bought a used 1990 jazzmaster japan for under what it should go for because of minor issues. I fixed in about 5 minutes... so it sometimes goes the other way too. Sucks he got scammed again... Live and learn
