Gibraltar airport Cross wind Missed approch / go around with bird strike. 23/10/16

A windy morning in Gibraltar, first easy jet flight diverted, due to gusting winds, BA flight aborted and diverted, easy jet flight from Manchester attempted a landing but aborted at last seconds, and hit a bird as it climbed away from Gibraltar, the third easy jet flight had to wait for the runway to be inspected before being allowed to land but was low on fuel and couldn't wait so diverted, again to Malaga. Info on bird strike : A gull hit the port cowling and also the pressure housing on the port spools..

it looks quite dramatic but its fairly normal for this time of year, i have landed here a few times but never had to "go around". the winds were gusting that day but had calmed down enough to make an approach. the pilot asked if he could try again but the plane needed checking out because of the bird strike( did he tell you about the bird strike?) but there were no engineers at gib so he diverted to Malaga. feel free to share ! A.C.

No crosswind here, the windsock is almost flat. Issue here is he was too high and decided to go around which is a good idea if you are worried about stopping. From what I can remember it’s not a horribly long runway.

Easy mistake for the bird to make, assumed the plane was going to land and didn’t allow for the possibility of a go around. Hopefully the bird will remember in the future.

The easyJet flight looks like it had left it very fine to touch down and stop in time before reaching the end of the runway in safety, although in my experience it would have been possible. I guess the captain didn’t feel comfortable or rec’d advice to abort the landing. Tend to agree on the comments re the ‘bird strike’....

Hi thank for the comment. Re. Bird strike: some comments suggest it didn't occur but others agree it did! all I can say is that the strike was confirmed by atc and by those who inspected the plane-I assume at malaga - see other posts. The next easyjet flight was refused permission to land untill the runway was inspected for debris. Unfortunately that plane didn't have enough fuel left to wait for the inspection and also diverted to malaga.

nice video but nothing new in this at all - standard issue and to be expected in Gibraltar> I fly there 4-6 times a month and hate it when this happens - 170 Euros for a taxi to get you out of Malaga or Jerez and into Gib ion time to get your life back to normal or suffer the torture of the 3 green buses and 3 hours of pain on the road

thanks for the comment! yes agree it's a pain when it happens especially when you are on business, only had to be bussed to Malaga once in the last ten years and that was from the old airport, another time our flight was diverted to Malaga but after waiting on the plane for about an hour we took off again and landed in Gibraltar!

Aren't carriers supposed to provide passengers with transportation back to GIB? I suppose a bus should be waiting for you in AGP.

  • @Railfreight37

hi not sure exactly how the system works, but I assume once a flight is diverted that buses would only then be ordered ( they may be on standby if bad weather is forecast) . Some would go to Gibraltar to take the already booked in passenger to Malaga, some would be ordered to pick up the passengers off the diverted flight to bring them to Gib ( again it may be the same buses). All checked baggage has to be repatriated with its owners who then have to go through customs on the Gib/ Spain border. they then get back on the coach for the hour plus journey to Malaga where they check in , all this can take up to three hours!

Mandelaisalive buses were laid on but we were held on board the aircraft for an hour at Malaga airport before we were allowed off. We arrived in Gibraltar 6 hours later.

We were diverted to Malaga on March 30th 2018 as it was far too windy to even attempt land. We hired car to get us to Cadiz as the idea of being bused to Gibraltar was too depressing.

Most likely would have been fine but he was quite a bit beyond the touchdown zone markings and even over the aiming point markers but I’ve witnessed landings here beyond this. It’s pilot discretion often based on ground speed in relation to wind speed.

No wouldn’t have, cause the back wheels must touch the touch down zone, to ensure, the plane does not run out of runway. As u could see, the wheels were above the touch down zone, and so the landing was aborted.

There is no bird strike, the bird is no where near the plane at the time, its just the camera angle. You would have also seen a small pop of fire from the back of the engine if it was.

I was listening to ATC at the time and the pilot reported a bird strike, the bird was split in two and debris was found on the runway not sure if it went in the engine though.

it hit under the fuselage between the nosewheel and wing section you tard. bird strike doesn't require it to be in the engine. I had a strike on the canopy once by a pigeon while flying a Diamond DA42, luckily my instructor was there to save my ass
