Here's what's always confusing to me: for delta g naught, since concentrations are held to 1 M , then Keq naught is ALWAYS 1, and so delta g naught is ALWAYS 0. For any reaction. So, by definition, delta g naught is a constant: ALWAYS at equilibrium and ALWAYS zero. So what the hell use is it? How do we have tables where delta g naught varies? The only way that would be true is if concentrations of all products and reactants were NOT all the same at 1 M. And here you're talking about how changing Keq changes delta g naught. Bu based on the DEFINITION of standard conditions, Keq should never vary from 1, so its ln should ALWAYS be zero, all the time. What the hell am I missing here?

At standard conditions you start with 1M .. -ve value of ∆G° implies rxn is spontaneous... So the 1M of reactants will react to form products and finally equilibrium will be attained ... .. For spontaneous rxn at equilibrium we will end up with more products than reactant .. We won't have 1 mole of reactants left Or products as reactants are reacting to form products... At equilibrium :Moles of reactants 1 .. So keq>1

Are endergonic and exergonuc reactions at equilibrium but one favors reactants while the other favors products? Thank you for your explanation
@DaChemOG

Hello Dana. A reaction that's at equilibrium actually favors neither side, which is why ΔG = 0 for a reaction at equilibrium. If a reaction favors products, it is exergonic and has a negative ΔG. If a reaction favors reactants, it is endergonic and has a positive ΔG. The vast majority of reactions will lean toward one side of a reaction or another until equilibrium is established. Once a reaction reaches equilibrium, it will stay there and won't favor either side.

@@DaChemOG I thought you could have at equilibrium K>1, product favored or K

Where did the RTLn(Q) came from? Is there any explanation to this relationship in this equation?
@DaChemOG
2 жыл бұрын
The spontaneity of a reaction relates to its distance from equilibrium in the following manner: ΔG = RT ln (Q/K). Higher values of Q give a more positive ΔG. That's because larger values of Q indicate an overabundance of products relative to reactants. The corrective course of reaction is to make more reactants. Similarly, smaller values of Q lead to negative values of ΔG. When Q = K, the ratio is 1 and ΔG = 0.

Why do T = 0 degree Celcius when delta G = delta G not
@DaChemOG

Hello Hoshpreet. T is actually equal to 25 Celsius at standard conditions when ΔG = ΔG° (not zero Celsius). You may be thinking of STP instead, which applies to Ideal Gases.
