This comes on the heels of Giant doing a Taiwan factory introduction of the new TCR - Invited all the usual "suspects" from print & internet - video cameras everywhere (except certain parts of the factory) Mgr bragging about Giant mfg size & quality - showing hand layups, Stock lining the shelves, etc, etc. Then to nickel & dime a cracked fork makes no sense. It would have taken then 1% of effort/time vs all the back and forth. They must want customers to lie = everyone is racing or hitting boulders.🙄 Too many Corporations still do customer service very poorly & the Cycling industry has some of the worst.

I owned 2 bikes shops. When I started out for the first couple of years I was a Giant dealer before switching to the Dorrel Sports range of brands and Scott. I can confirm that when it comes to warranty the Giant warranty is not worth the paper it is written on they will always try to weasel out of any warranty claims. This always puts the bike shop in a really difficult position. I never had this issue with other brands.

For comparison: 2 years ago I emailed the Chinese brand TanTan to request a replacement fork for my $600 R12 frameset. I wanted a spare fork just in case I decided to resell the frame, as I usually run a slammed stem. TanTan replied within 24 hours and was happy to offer up a fork for marginal fee. I think because TanTan is an OEM factory and also sells directly to consumers, there's less red tape and lines of communication that the customer needs to navigate through.

The knuckleheads are the ones responsible for facing Giants caliper mounts at the factory. My Giant TCR was so bad at the rear that the shop had to get another bike in from another store and replace my frame, neither the bike shop or Giant NZ had the tools to face the caliper mount. But it took several weeks of toing and froing with the store and Giant NZ to get a result. After a few patient weeks I got angry, went into the store to speak to the manager and gave them an ultimatum to either repair my frame, replace it or give me back my money. Fortunately, we have a good Consumers Guarantee Act here in NZ. He called Giant NZ then and there and came up with the solution to get another bike from another store to swap my components over (the bike had been setup with my components but never ridden, the caliper mount was so bad there was no way to stop the disc from rubbing. The store had already spent 45 minutes trying to get it to do so when I went to pick up the bike new). On the other hand, years ago, I cracked a Trek MTB and was temporarily working in a different city to where I lived usually, went to a bike shop that sold Trek and Trek NZ replaced the frame within two weeks. Same deal with GT, cracked frame replaced within two weeks.

Thanks for sharing this story. In my opinion you are still pretty nice about the whole situation. I think this is unacceptable customer service for a premium product like this. So far i thought that the main downside of riding a Chinese frame for example would be communication and long shipping times for replacement parts and that with major brands you pay a big extra to be well covered by their wide customer care network and quick access to replacement parts in case you need it. But hearing this i ve had quicker turnarounds with some Chinese brands already who had to communicate and ship from the other side of planet. This video is a good eye opener for potential customers and hopefully also for some major brand reps so that things can change for the better.

Long time Giant customer, but something has gone wrong in the recent past. I've had the 2019 Revolt replaced twice with cracked seat tube near bottle bosses, then the 2022 revolt replaced twice with cracked seat tube at the top. Both of these a so common nearly every frame sold has these defects, alot of customers are not checking. Added to this I've had a 21 TCR crack at the top of the seat tube, replaced, then I've just had the seat post itself crack due to the seat clamp design, which has been remedied by Giant. See Peaktorques latest video for this defect. So thats 6 warranties in the last 4 years.... I'll add I am 75kg 180cm, so I'm not pushing the boudries here. Getting a shop to do the warranty work is also a big issue as Giant are not compensating them properly for completeing the work, however Giant will not allow me to do the work myself. Something seriously wrong with Giant right now.

I have a small 22 revolt 2. I keep checking it for cracks but I have not found any yet. My theory is its the bigger frames that crack. But I do have a problem the paint around the dropout chainstay area is all bubbles. You can tell it’s galvanic corrosion. I don’t know if I even want to try and warranty this frame. Im thinking about just replacing it with the winspace gravel frame. It would be an upgrade at this point. Bigger tire clearance, threaded bb, normal seat post, and shorter reach.

I have a 2023 TCR Advanced Pro. I bought it, adjusted the stem a couple times and used a torque wrench every time. I discovered a crack and went to my LBS. Giant said “classic over torque evidence” which is not covered, but that they would replace with their composite confidence program. I was a bike mechanic in a former life.. I didn’t over torque. They offered me a non matching fork, I said I’d wait for the color match. My LBS took care of me and kept me going with a non matching fork. It took 9 months to get my color match fork from Giant. I love the bike idkwtf took so long, grateful to my LBS.

I had a shocking warrenty experience with Giant on a 2022 tcr. Delamination of the carbon at the point of the seat wedge. Took nearly a year to receive a replacement frame. After receiving that frame, within a few weeks the frame cracked on the rear side of the seatpost. Received another frame 6 months down the track after an escalation at Giant HQ. Local shops that sell Specialized and Trek were astounded at wait time and treatment. Safe to say i'll never get another giant. Frames and customer services was sub-par at best.

This problem and experience isn't unique to giant, they change the paint jobs every 6 to 12 months and you are stuffed if they don't have inventory of the old paint job. That fork costs then 20usd to make so they are still profiting from a 500usd cost to the customer. People should start voting with their feet. All this business about supporting a Western brand because it had superior warranty is frankly bs. They are no better and in many cases worse than buying a premium cn brand. At least you aren't paying as much from the outset. Incidentally, giant water being sued in the uk courts for over 1m over faulty forks

Sorry to hear about the hassle buddy. Thanks for sharing this. I have a TCR 2021 and blew up/crack my front rim during a fast downhill segment. Surprisingly the rim(SLR1) did hold up air for the rest of ride home. My LBS (in NJ)filed a claim with Giant and got a brand new SLR1 shipped to them, installed for me, within 6 days, at no cost, no questions asked. So I was quite surprised and pleased by their build quality as well as the warranty service…I think Giant’s website now states that to get the warranty, the bike has to be assembled by their dealer. Good luck with the channel and your nice Propel!

As someone who’s had a warranty claim with both Trek and Cannondale in the past year, both took about 2-4 weeks turnaround. The Cannondale one was pretty instant, as I showed them the damage, the shop sent the pics along with my receipt, and Cdale accepted the claim a few days later and had a new frame out the next week. Trek had me jump through a few more hoops for proof of purchase, but eventually accepted the claim and sent me a new frame. Mind you, both of these frames were floor models from LBS that I bought off eBay. So Giant putting you through the ringer for a frame you bought directly from them is kinda crazy

I had a very different experience with Giant warranty. I crashed my rim brake TCR a year ago and cracked my top tube. I went to my local giant dealer and used their "composite confidence" program to get a new frame and fork for free (beside labor for my LBS to move the components over). Overall it only took about a month to get back rolling on a brand new fork+frame (with an even better color).

The disconnect is due to the fact I built the bike myself at home, rather than having the authorized LBS do it. This leaves a lot room for customer fault, which is why I initially offered to pay for the replacement fork. Whether or not it was actually my fault.

@@PatrickLino Ah, did you mention the composite confidence to them or just explicitly try to get it warrantied? Got the new frame within a month but I did have to pay like 200$ for them to swap out the parts. Not sure if it was because I didn’t buy the bike from that shop. However, That’s the reason why I just ordered the new TCR model. But a friend did have to wait about a year to get his power meter fixed or replaced by Giant. I've worked in several shops, as well as ridden a variety of brands over the years. I can tell you that I have had different experiences with even the same brand under warranty depending on the inside rep for the region where the shop is based. Most recently, Shimano took 9 weeks to warranty an Ultegra shifter for me.(Eventually gave me a "goodwill replacement" for a shifter with a cracked master cylinder) For what it's worth, Giant has been fairly consistently one of the BETTER companies to work with on warranty, at least at the shops where I have had to deal with them. Given your insistence on having not just a Propel fork, but specifically one with matching paint, I would not consider 7 weeks inordinate time in the current industry climate, either. I suspect it took some serious searching at a warehouse to track one down. I AM sorry you ended up feeling like you were getting the run around/cold shoulder from the various reps you communicated with, but sometimes it just takes being the aqueaky wheel to get the right grease.

My experience has been that warranty service in the bike industry is inconsistent and shouldn’t be considered in your purchase decision. I’ve had good experiences. For example, Trek replacing a full frame due to a fork that developed a crack on a model they no longer carried. I’ve also had terrible results like Shimano not replacing a brand new shifter because I couldn’t “prove” it was a mfg problem. As a result, I’m leaning toward less expensive brands and considering the parts disposable.

If you've been following my channel for some time, the majority of my bike builds are with Chinese frames costing typically $700 or less. No need for warranties (or insurance) since the frames are practically disposable at that price point. You get about 75-85% of the performance for a 1/5th the price.

Wow. Not a great look for Giant. Basically the warranty is useless if you buy just the frame -- unless the customer is a KZreadr. I'm glad you shined light.

My warranty process with Specialized (in Poland) last year took almost 6 months - 1,5 month of considering the claim and 4 months of waiting for the new frame. But otherwise than waiting in the middle of the season, it was no problem giving that it could be easily rejected, because it was thru axle thread problem after a half year of riding. And the warranty frame is carbon - I had alloy - so that is a nice compensation for the lost season.

I work at a Giant reseller in Australia. Now, I think their bikes are rubbish and not what they used to be, but in saying that, their warranty department is usually pretty good in comparison to others. I really think it comes down to the staff of the warranty department and maybe country of origin. If I submit a warranty on a frame, usually a week or 2 later we have a new frame/bike.

I believe that giant did have a reasonable and fair argument of the void warranty due to the bike being built outside of an authorized shop. This is just a normal risk to building from the frame up. I have experienced cracking my steerer tube and was definitely my fault. I am surprised that you did not show us how the steer tube was cracked. This would solidify whether it was user error or not. Having said all this, you are VERY lucky they reconsidered their decision. Normal people would just have to pay upfront.

  • @PatrickLino

    @PatrickLino

I clearly stated to Giant that I understood the financial implications. Both the bike shop and Giant’s warranty dept inspected and assessed the crack themselves. No need for photos on my video since the decision was ultimately determined by Giant.
