PLEASE HELP!!!! KZread does NOT support my channel!! I am permanently demonetised; when people click on my videos, I don't make a single dollar. This channel runs on donations from my viewers for 100% !
The type of content I make is very expensive and time consuming - such as filming the whole life cycles of butterflies and moths in captivity, which takes months of dedication! I am also an independent researcher, conservationalist, moth breeder and hobbyist, and the funds I raise online go towards my videos, my research & breeding projects that promote the importance and our knowledge of insects and other animals - on social media and in reallife! It helps me make videos, and it helps me help the insects I care about!
Consider subscribing to my Patreon for as little as 1$ per month: / bartbutterflies - it massively helps! On Patreon, people can buy a subscription. Patrons also get unique rewards, like voting on content, personal FAQ videos, or participating in my videos once in a while.
Send a single payment through PayPal: paypal.me/BartCoppens - consider it to be like a "tip" if you like my content. Through PayPal you can send a single donation, which will help me produce more videos.
Send a tip through Ko-Fi: ko-fi.com/bartbutterflies - through this platform, users can send small finacial "tips" to support their favorite artists or creators.
Want to donate with VISA or Credit Card? This is possible too, via LiberaPay, a trusted online platform. My LiberaPay is here: liberapay.com/BartCoppens/
Did you know that I make custom merchandise such as cards, calendars and more with my moth & butterfly designs? The sales help my channel; find my Etsy shop here: www.etsy.com/shop/BartCoppens...
Did you know that on Amazon.com there is a store where you can find ALL the equipment I use and recommend so that you can copy me? My cameras, my breeding equipment, everything! Find my Amazon storefront here: www.amazon.com/shop/bartcoppens
Patrons & People who have donated can expect to see their names in the credits of my videos sometimes, get shoutouts, or participate in events or special FAQ videos - on top of getting my gratitude of course. Your donation helps me research insects, and helps me spread love and knowledge for them world wide!
I allow RANDOM followers to send me RANDOM items to my HOME ADRESS through Amazon Wish List! It's super interactive and fun - you can send me anything from video games, butterfly cages, books, energy drinks, breeding boxes, flower seeds for my butterflies, hot sauce, ramen noodles, silly outfits, memory cards, underwear.. it's crazy and hilarious! It is much more personal than donating money, because YOU decide the item I get!!
** Please Read How it Works Below! **
There are TWO versions of my wish list on Amazon, a Dutch one and an American one. If you order through the Dutch website, the shipping costs are very low, because it is my home country! Sending me gifts through USA Amazon is much more expensive on shipping! However, both websites offer DIFFERENT types of items you can ship to me!
LIST NUMBER 1: (Dutch Amazon) www.amazon.nl/hz/wishlist/ls/...
LIST NUMBER 2: (American Amazon) www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls...
Anything you send me, I will show off on my channel in a video at some point! If you send me books I will read them! They are items I want or need for my channel, but also some silly things viewers can send me to mess with my life!
I have a personal website about breeding moths that I am proud of. It has tips and caresheets for many moth species. Here is the link: breedingbutterflies.com/

The Emperor Silk Moth was one of my favourite moths to draw (with coloured pencils) when I was a lad of 4 or 5. Seeing so many in person warms my cockles, scallops and oysters.

They do become calm after a while. Maybe the light puts them to sleep (they are nocturnal); and the body temperature cools down when they sit still.

A lot of the moths seem to have damage to their wings, does this mean that their wings aren't as delicate as butterfly wings? Or does it very from species to species? Love the Emperor Moths the most!

  • @BartCoppens

It depends. They are big and robust moths, but the wings are not built to last ages like butterfly wings are. These moths have a lifespan of about 10 days. From an evolutionary perspective it doesn't matter if their wings could last for months. They just need them for a week or two, to mate, and die. I think the fact the wings can rip and tear also helps them escape predators, who would typically bite off a chunk of wing while the moth continues to fly away.

Hello Bart! I’m an aspiring entomologist and I want to do exactly what you’re doing! I’ve been subbed to you for a while but I never noticed you were an entomologist that travelled. I’m wondering how you got to this point, since now I know it’s obtainable, and how it’s REALLY like working as an entomologist.

Those are some beautiful moths! I've always wanted to try light trapping, but I don't think I have the right lamp to do it with. I bought a 100W heating bulb, which is very bright, but the lamp I have cannot sustain the light for long. Do you know of any lamps that would be suitable for light trapping?

This was hardly my “favourite “ moment, for it was actually quite sad; however, it ended up being the thing that would not leave my mind in spite of wonderful moments later in the video. I am referring, of course, to the two moths with what looked like nearly identical congenital defects in their right rear wings. I am curious as to how wide-spread is this phenomenon, and whether it might be the result of an industrial or agricultural teratogen. If they were cuttlefish I’d know who to talk to about further investigation; however, they are clearly not. (Nevertheless, the mental image of a 0,5m cuttlefish ‘flying’ into your moth trap puts me-a bit-in stitches.) My ACTUAL favourite moment was either the eclipse of enormous lappet moths, as I’d just never seen anything so large from that genus, and I could feel my eyes straining a bit in an attempt to pop out mi head…Or it was the (almost) symmetrical pair of Saturniids you held. In fact, those two lovely silk moths reminded me of a question I’ve been meaning to ask you. I’ve noticed this particular behaviour-particularly among large Saturniids, and I’m very curious as to its purpose or significance: I cannot count the number of times I’ve held a large moth and its wings would tremble. The feeling is that it is terrified; however, I know better than to anthropomorphise insects. I then thought, ‘Perhaps it’s a means of keeping warm,’ to which I immediately responded, ‘Of course that’s not it, you fool; moths aren’t warm-blooded.’ From there my ideas only grew DUMBER. This is not a phenomenon to which I am accustomed. So, Bart, my dear fellow, would you please be so kind as to tell me the answer so it can stop driving me out mi head? P.S. One other favourite moment had to be ‘For Fahrenheit people out there: Grow up; you’re using the wrong system.’

The enormous lappet moth shocked me. I find them fascinating-and I imagine that another reason they are so poorly documented is the fact they all-invariably-resemble dead twigs. (I am (half-)joking.) Differentiating between brown/brown-black lappet moths must be incredibly challenging. However, the large female lappet at 24:00 was VERY outstanding. That’s probably the first I’ve seen such an interesting configuration of folded wings. That ENORMOUS hawk moth was just incredible. It looked half combat jet/half combat pilot-with the swept wings , of course…but it also looked as if it were wearing an HELMET! I’ve seen loads of hawk moths with patches of fuzz on their heads and thoraces, but that’s quite a construct it had upon its head. Deffo a real stunner, Bart. (I feel as if I’ve commented on all but a couple of moths-and I can remember which ones I didn’t comment upon!) One of the most fascinating moth trapping nights you’ve shared with us. Thank you so much for letting us come along! Amerila bubo recycling the electrolytes from your sweat was well cute.
