Giant Dome Climb in Carlsbad Cavern

Спорт

Tom Rohrer and Ronal Kerbo did the pioneering first ascent of Liberty Dome in 1976 by hand-drilling up the steeply overhanging wall at the southern end of Carlsbad Cavern's Big Room. This climb was repeated using modern climbing aids to check for leads and produce a new survey. Some of this video was captured while volunteering for the National Park Service at Carlsbad Caverns. The opinions expressed are those of the editor, and not of the National Park Service.

    What a great opportunity: retracing the steps of the first cavers reaching this dome over 40 years ago. For my next caving trip with my grotto, we are going to a gypsum cave in Western Oklahoma called Nescatunga. Seeing the videos that you produce and that other cavers have produced just gets me excited to see things I have never seen in person. I received my first survey training a couple weeks ago learning point.

    I remember my visit to Carlsbad and stopping in awe at the same sign. What a cool opportunity.

    Derek, I just went to Carlsbad for the first time today. Wow. I told my friends about your climb when we came to the Liberty Dome in the Big Room.

    Cool! We just missed you. We were there all week surveying and did some rigging improvements in Liberty Dome on Thanksgiving.

    Hey Derek. Nice video as always. Just wondering, do you use those concrete screws for aid climbing? I've just read your translation for concrete screws test for use in caving. Can you make a video showing us how to properly use them for caving? Thanks!

    Yes, I used them on the climb in this video. I'll do a series of tutorial videos on aid climbing, and I'll include the use of screws.

    I was just in Carlsbad for the first time on Thursday, and saw something suspended from Liberty. We were wondering what it was, crazy long soda straw (unlikely)? Cable? Must have been one of the ropes you left rigged up. Cool to see it's been re-surveyed recently.

    Cool, mystery solved! I think the Liberty Dome sign said something about some cavers in the 70s(?) using helium balloons to hook a balsa loop on a feature up there as a means of getting a rope up. That would have been interesting to watch ...

    @@Zoidberg227 There is another rope hanging out of the ceiling a bit north of Liberty Dome. This is at Top of the Cross and comes out of Spirit World. It is intentionally lit up, so it's easy to see. This climb was done in the early 80's using helium balloons and the balsa hoop. The Liberty Dome climb was done using more traditional aid climbing techniques.

    Actually, Tom never got up to the top. He only wanted to get up high enough to set a reflector for the survey. Ron led a climb to the top. I know because I was with him. We punched out everything. It was impossible for there to be another lead. I would love to know what the basis was for saying we missed a lead. How could anyone know it was missed without being up there? I wish you had left our film cannister up there.

    Are you not allowed to use a small mini drone to explore the bigger area's? might make for cool footage?

  • @DJthumpDJ
    @DJthumpDJ4 жыл бұрын

    Why not try using small drones with a flashlight and camera to explore prior to bolting/aiding up there? DJI Mavic Enterprise for example has a flashlight attachment, and also thermal camera (might be able to see different temps due to airflow?) - these drones also have anti-collision sensors (though they might not work too well in low light).

    There are a number of limitations in using drones for cave exploration, but primary in this example is that they aren’t permitted in the National Parks.

    @@DerekBristol NPS can issue special permits for drone use within the parks... if they have 1/2 a brain they would realize that using a drone leaves zero impact compared to a trail of drilled holes with bolts in them. Might be worth a try :)

    What about a RC blimp/zeppelin? I don't think that is considered a drone.
