That 4-square format is limited, but is far better than using the seating arrangements of the 18th-19th Century French parliament/États généraux of Left, Right and Center. Consider that there is little difference, except cosmetic and dubious ideological suggestions, between the Nazi, Soviet, other Fascist and Putinist regimes. Putting them on the opposite sides of a linear diagram implies that there is opposition or significant difference where they are all totalitarian, anti-democratic, anti-human rights, etc. The only reason they oppose each other is they both want the same thing, total control, and use the same methods to obtain and keep it!

The best part about the "feud" between Canada and Denmark is that they now send troops to "Liberate" the island from the other. They essentially politely take down the flag of the other country, fold it up and put it in a lockbox with a bottle of booze for the next group to share (Schnapps from from the Danes, Whiskey from us Canadians) then put their own flag on the poles and go home.

This video has made me r realise just how similar the politics of the UK and Canada are. Like having: -Two main parties that always win elections with one often only coming in under exceptional circumstances -A smaller separatist party and third-choice party -A large geographical region that feels neglected by the Central government -A belief that we are extremely different from our closest neighbours while being quite alike and so on.

  • @Steadyaim101

It's interesting because at least the UK can claim to be a somewhat separate ethnic and cultural group with you know the last ethnic and cultural revolution being the Normans, the end of the 100 years-war, and the joining of the crown. Like even though you historically shared language and ethnicity with France and Northern Germany it's easy to say you aren't them today. In Canada, our ethnic map and cultural identity are indistinguishable from the Northern US. There is literally no separation except an artificial border yet we act as though it's an entirely different world.

except a weird alternate timeline UK where the LibDems won the majority of elections, and Labor had never even had a prime minister... so basically just the UK 100 years ago (the LibDems being a descendant of the UK Liberal party ofc), but if Scottish Nationalist parties had actually been successful back then. And I guess that fits because back in the 20s, Scottish nationalists were probably about as socially conservative as Quebecois nationalists can be at times today, if not moreso (whereas today it's pretty clear that Scottish nationalists are significantly more progressive than Quebecois nationalists are).

  • @ifeeltiredsleepy

    @ifeeltiredsleepy

    2 жыл бұрын

@@ByzantineDarkwraith Quebecois nationalists are not particularly socially conservative, they tend to identify as feminist and pro-lgbt. They come in socialist variety (parti-Quebecois) with civic nationalism, and conservative (CAQ) that tends to be less radically nationalist but more anti-immigration. And even the conservative variety has had an openly gay leader, Andre Boisclaire. Also, the Canadian Liberal party and the UK Liberal party are not historically linked. The Canadian Liberal party is descended from anti-monarchist reformers and the political alliance between the True Grits in Ontario and the Parti Rouge in Quebec, where the formerly Whig politicians (who would be linked directly to the Liberal party in the UK) were in alliance with the Tories to form the Liberal-Conservatives who overtime just became the Conservatives. The Libdems have a lot in common with blue liberals and the Progressive Conservatives, Ideologically the 19th century Canadian Liberals were chartists like the pre-cursors of Labour. So in reality, despite the names, the Canadian political outcomes are largely the same as the UK since the Liberal Party of Canada has had more in common historically and presently with UK Labour than they do with the Libdems.

The whole Vancouverite thing is something that isn’t referencing their political input, just their heritage and ideology. Regarding chinese immigrants, I think there can be a big difference between the permanent diaspora, who as you say don't tend to be particularly politically engaged, and those in the country temporarily (usually students). The latter tend to be more pro-china and more politically active (though of course not all of them are). Their political goals are not to turn their host nation communist or anything like that, I don't think they really care who is in charge, but to influence its foreign policy with china, regardless of who is in charge. The idea being when a country or institution says something critical about the chinese government, you will see loyal students protesting about it and making pro-china propaganda. I think that's what the meme might be referring to there.

@@MidnightCheerios Something that's really interesting about Canadian history is that despite insisting that they are vastly different from Americans, many places in Canada and the United States were in fact settled by the same people, and so areas close to the US-Canada border will have culturally more in common with areas across the border than other parts of their own country, despite outward appearances. The Maritimes were settled by fisherman and farmers from the New England colonies after the Acadians who were there first were expelled (though they still exist today both on the coasts of the Maritimes and in southern Louisiana in the US, where many of them settled and where the area is even known as "Acadiana" today), Ontario was settled by more middle-class farmers from the Mid-Atlantic colonies like New York and Pennsylvania, many settlers in the Prairie provinces were Americans or immigrants who had come to America and decided to resettle in Canada instead, especially in Alberta, and coastal British Columbia was settled from neighboring parts of the Pacific Northwest in the US, and both are considered part of "Cascadia" today. @@Necrotoxin44 Its not quite the same since Alberta is highly populous in comparison to the American interior, especially when you consider the relative numbers in their respective countries. Alberta alone has a higher population than Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota combined - its best comparable in the states is a hybrid between Colorado and Texas. Saskatchewan is like the Dakotas and that general area, you couldn't tell it apart.

It's kind of different though. For example slavery never existed in any of the western provinces except among a few pre contact indigenous peoples. BC also has to be taken into account as we are very different from both the prairies and "the east" or true Canada. Aside from drastic differences in landscape Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were created by Canada out of the HBCs Rupert's Land that had been given to the Canadian federal government British Columbia existed before confederation and reluctantly joined confederation later on and the British Columbian state/crown as a province is considered to be the same continuous entity as it was from our founding in 1858 we even have a bit of pre Canadian legislation on the books to prove it. BC is more like a stepchild of Canada and many people here dream of the day when we finally move out and get our own place. I think that since Quebec has set a precedent that provinces can call themselves nations BC can call ourselves a nation too one defined by a shared unique geography and everything that comes with that. BC and Alberta are more like brotherly nations (and we of course can fight like brothers too) that would if independent be allied countries but separate from eachother rather than in a federation like the Confederate States in the South. Religion also doesn't play nearly as important of a role in the west as it does in the south. The biggest driver of western alienation is the federal political system itself rather than any kind of hatred for the other provinces or the people in them. The idea of having a federal election just be rep by pop only seems fair in theory but when the majority of the population in that election lives in what might as well be a different far away country it ends up being more like you being treated like a colony or a second class voice at the federal level. The provinces would all probably get along better without the federal government.

The difference between the "True Socialist" and the "Anarcho-Socialist" is that the true socialist wants the state to own everything, whereas the ansoc doesn't want a government (or corporations) and wants the people to own the land. To clarify, think USSR under Stalin with True Socialist, and think of the romanticised image of the peaceful earth loving native Americans with the ansoc. So, yes, they are in fact VERY different.

I used to live in Arizona and we'd always see a huge influx of them around October/November when it would start to get cold in northern states and everything in the city was miserable with way too many people on the road (and many of them being elderly drivers, you can extrapolate form there) and it would last until the first hot day of the spring when about a week later they'd all packed up and the city was livable again.

As an actual Virginian, the concept of the “North Virginian” depicted here is especially hilarious. In today’s Virginia, the North (lovingly dubbed NoVA) tends to be much more progressive than the “good old boy” types from the South. That’s not to say there aren’t conservatives here, far from it, but they tend to be more fiscally-focused than anything else. Most of us, especially those that grew up here, desperately want nothing to do with our states Confederate history. Instead we tend to glomp on to the DC/Maryland cultures, even if we still maintain a bit of state rivalry with the two. @@JJMcCullough As a long time fan of Hetalia I assure you Hetalia is worth checking out. There is actual research put into the series. Especially if you read the Webcomic. It started out very shallow, offensive, and crude, but as the series progressed and became more popular more research and thought was put into the characters, including into the portrayal of Canada. I would recommend "Fly Mr. Canada Fly" which was Canada's debut as a character in 2008. As well as Hetalia World Stars chapters 175 - 217 which retell the story of Canada's road to becoming an independent country published in 2016. (this arc is not in the show.) There are many other times he appears but those are the big ones that really delve into who he is. It would also be interesting to see an analysis on how America is portrayed in hetalia, but this is a 16 year old series and America is one of the protagonists, so that would be an extreme undertaking.

"Language policy should reflect the day-to-day lived experience of the majority" I'm a Scottish Gaelic learner in Scotland. There is also a small community in Novia Scotia, I believe you have a Gaelic-medium college there. It could die as a community language within your lifetime if we took your approach. A video on minority languages in Canada could be interesting PS, if you'd like any info about Gaelic, or even any recordings, I'd be happy to help

When I was listening to that part it made me think that Canada and the US have a very similar relationship to language. It has to do with colonialism. It's some the dominant group imposes. I visited Kenya in highscool and they had a totally different colonial experience. Over there every body speaks 3 languages. Your tribes native language, English (school, business) and Swahili (linngu franca). The languages exist as long as the tribe exists. I don't think they view it in a more zero sum way like we do.

  • @Tk3997

    >It could die as a community language within your lifetime if we took your approach Too which my response is "then it dies" . Why does a language have any inherent value anyway? If no one can be bothered to learn or use it anymore, not even the nominally 'native' residents of it's area of origin, what exactly is it's value? Why should we go out of our way to attempt to place it on the linguistic equivalent of life support? So that it it will thrive again someday? You know it never will, and most likely artfical attempts to sustain it it will also fail anyway. A language that cannot be used to communicate with a large number of people for day to day life is DOOMED. It's why all attempts at artfical universal languages fail and its why all minority languages with shrinking speaking communities are destined for oblivion. A language that cannot be used to communicate readily with large numbers of people around you for day to day tasks is in fact useless for it's function, and most people can't be bothered preserving useless things. And this is nothing to do with "colonialism" piss off with such idiocy. This is nature, languages have risen, fallen, and mutated since before recorded history. Why for instance is Scottish Gaelic more valuable or worthy of preservation then a thousand other dead languages dating back to the time we literally to the time when flint knives and atlatl were the peak of human technological achievement? There are no decrees or policies that kill languages the only things that kill languages are the indifference of potential speakers. And if THEY don't give enough of a crap about it to bother learning it, why should we care?

@@t_ylr Most of those languages will die over time, probably a few generations as integration and internal migrations rises, unless the smaller parts split off as separate polities. Once the internal mixing is sufficient that Swahili is the only real way for most people to communicate with one another day to day most of those other languages will begin dying out, because the next generations born to those effectively dominate Swahili speakers will not learn the tribal languages because many won't be born anywhere near where they originated first off all and second because the language will be useless in their day to day lives because almost no one they encounter will speak it. A few will for the kind of futile 'preservation' purposes being cited with Gaelic above, but most won't, and the speaker base will shrink with every generation. This is just the nature of language.

@@Tk3997 It's true most languages eventually go extinct or evolve into a new version, but you kinda missed my point. Sure internal migration or people marrying outside their tribe are definitely threats to a language. Unlike "French only" Quebecois or Americans who want English to be the official language, I think the average Kenyan doesn't view people learning other languages (or not learning theirs) as a bad thing. From their perspective it's the tribe's job to preserve a language not the state's job to impose it. After years of British rule and English in schools why haven't these languages already died out?
