Giant Bicycles Carbon Assembly Factory Tour
Спорт
Giant produces 1 million bikes a year in its Dajia, Taiwan facility - one of nine factories it operates around the world. With the launch of the TCR Advanced road bike, Giant gave a tour of its Dajia factory to 32 global editors, showing how it builds the new TCR Advanced carbon frame.

Great to see you concentrating on what the presenter was saying while others were off taking photos etc, you were right there in front of him, well done Ben, very informative.
Giant's factory cleanliness is far above any composite manufacturers I have seen. Hats off to Giant. Thanks Ben

That x-ray for every fork is crazy impressive.
@daynosdr
2 ай бұрын
Except its for show. 24/7 and 365 and no downtime, at 3 mins a fork would be 175,200 forks per year. says right there below the title that they produce a million bikes a year. If you were really QCing every fork with this machine or similar, you would have a computer do it, and you would only use humans to inspect any forks that have an anomaly. It's clear that this tour guide is very much a marketeer and not an engineer.
@cup_and_cone
2 ай бұрын
@@daynosdrYes, I too am skeptical as the math does not make sense. That's only 15-20 forks an hour, which is a really low rate. With x-ray a human still needs to manually review the scans for anomalies. At 7:19 you can see scan totals from 6,000-10,000 per month and rejection rates...so maybe 100,000 forks a year.

No company anywhere that’s mass producing anything can or would QC every single piece. It’s not sustainable. Most take a random number of samples from a batch or set number of product produced and check them. (Ex, every 5th one out of 50, etc…) Over the course of many batches they can relatively safely assume that based on the sample checks that each of those batches is as good (or possibly bad) as what the batch sample test shows. I don’t think they’re trying to say they check every single one, but if so, I’m sure there’s an internet math nerd who can definitely prove/disprove it.
Just amazing how labor intensive building a carbon frame is. Nice Job Ben!
Being a Revolt rider, it was really neat to see all the detail and testing that Giant does. Awesome!
I'm Taiwanese, and ride Giant TCR Advanced, too. I would like to share a little story about Giant founder Mr. Liu. THX for Giant's founder Mr. Liu, he integrated rivals & vendors to define components specific (except drivetrain) in early 2000. So that bicycle OEM quality in Taiwan was improved due to the alliance. That's why Taiwan has another well know brand such as Merida & KMC & FSA(vision) & Topeak.

I loved giant bikes they're so high quality. No wonder other companies buy from them instead of making the bikes themselves.
As a happy giant owner, cool to see where and how it's made.
Testing those forks saves lives. Many other high end bike brands don't care.
I know people with a Jewelry factory there. What a technological giant, Giant has become.
Rode a TCR comp. Bottom bracket shell fell apart underneath. I glassed it myself and it held up 9 more years. Could have been a crash, but I rode that frame 14 years in total. I loved it!

The cold cutting process is probably the most lucrative aspect of it all. If giant as a manufacturer can sell it as a process to its bike company customers(which it will) it’ll make bank

I have a 2022 Fathom 29 and love it.
Great video. I really like the manufacturing excellence approach of giant, compared to, for example, pinarello that's a luxury brand approach first. And given that giant makes frames for lots of competitors, it's just funny, if not sad, that people willingly pay more just because the logo is different.

I bought a Cadex (Giant) carbon fiber frame mountain bike in 1990. Still rolling with: replaced derailleurs, wheels, crank, brakes, shock, and cables. [Hit by a car running a red in 2005, throwing the bike (and me) down the street about 30 meters.] The only minor issue was when I put disc breaks and new shock on the front, which raised the headset about 3.5 cm (~inch and a half) resulting in some faint crackling sounds when I rode for a few years. I’m sure the change in force direction put unusual stress on the frame…though after 10 years more riding, no noticeable effect. Frame could use new clear coat !
Awesome!!!!
I love Giant ❤❤❤

Carbon frames can be quite robust and long lasting. A family member has an eight year old Giant Trance Carbon mountain bike that has just gone over 16,000 miles (25,000km) of mainly off-road riding.
Anyone knows how they take the bladder out ? Does it melt ? Gets dissolved in whatever chemical ? Gets sucked out of the frame once it's been cooked and hardened ? Is it reusable or usable only once ?

This is the world we live in right now. On the bringe of collapsing and what do humans care about??? Well, a super-strong, lightweight bicycle. Crazy.
A friend of mine had a Giant TCR bike back in 2018 and he had to get the frame replaced under warranty due to the paint around the bottom bracket area cracking due to movement in the area. This is a common issue on giant bikes as what I have been told that most probably go back at least 10yrs. After my friend received a new bike build, he sold the bike. I would trust Giant with a 1000ft pole. A bicycle store back in the 90's in Melbourne told me about this issue and he would not sell them.

Thanks Ben. Fascinating insights into the intricacies of carbon bike building. Quality control is impressive, as is the skill and professional commitment of the team who build the bikes. Great to see that bikes made in Taiwan are among the best in the world. The filament to sheet tech was good to understand. More info about directional layups for different areas of the frame would be even more so. …Interestingly the new 3T made in Italia bikes now utilize a unique carbon filament winding process, whereby the majority of the frame is wound rather than laid up in sheets. That would be a very interesting comparison.
