Why do you pick them up by the gills? Thats the worse thing you can do to any fish your going to release.

Because any other way and you are going to drop them. Either way we do our best to be careful and quick. If you have another way of handling a big writhing, slimey fish I'm all ears.

One hand around the tail, one hand under the belly right behind the pectoral fins. If they are 30+, you can lay them in your arm like in my profile pic thing… You get a lot less blood. Give it a try. Nice fish.

Grabbing the gill plate is one thing - but it kills them if you grab the actual gill (red)
