Hi alrighty ru! I read that this film was released a year after his death. Thanks for the detail about him being actually drunk. Did he purposely get drunk for the scene and the director let him do so? I thought it was kind of ridiculous the part where Rock's friends keep holding onto his arms while in James is repeatedly punching him, some friends, unless that's part of the plot, friends who turned against Rock and subliminally were silent fans of James's character. I suppose before even seeing the movie that the real protagonist is James in the story. Strange to think they are all in heaven now. I suppose James being young and feeling his great notoriety couldn't deep down handle his fame. I imagine he raced dangerously around in his sports car a lot, an urge some youth have once they feel the power of driving a vehicle.

I've seen the movie more than once, but my reaction is not typical. A cattle baron had a field hand who was not educated, had nothing, and then when he received a small piece of land the rich railed against him. The statement "we should have killed him when he was a hand, but now he's too rich to kill" really says it all. I'm a Southerner who grew with people from the big city making the same condescending remarks about my family. Blood, Sweat, and Tears song Cowboys and Indians tells the story better than most. First the child wanted to be the cowboy, but by th end of the song the little boy preferred to be the Indian. I feel the same about this movie, I would prefer to be the James Dean character.

I think we all like to root for the underdog, specially if it's portrait with such a charm! but Jett's downward spiral wasn't brought by the rival family... He pretty much brought it all upon himself with his state of mind. The only "rich vs poor" take I would agree you have is that Jett is uneducated which leads him to act the way he those, but yeah I feel deep down he had a good heart.

The earliest "event" I remember was the Kennedy/Nixon campaign, so it must have been on national TV, maybe an abridged version since it's a 3 hour movie. Does anyone know? I plan to rent this movie but need to plan when with this length.

If the movie had been simplified to the max then it would have lived up to the expectations of the masses and been a legend. But it was way too clever and brilliant for the audiences of the time. What a shame. Elizabeth Taylor is beyond compare here and James Dean broke out of his niche just in time to leave this as his screen goodbye. Rock lives up to his name as always, of course. The score has its critics but it fits.

Watched it last night on TCM. Just watched "How They Died" on REEZ. Can you believe that ET nearly died in 1961 of a lung ailment and then didn't change her ways to a strict health routine?! In "Giant" she ages to an elderly woman. WTF!

The movie is a master piece, that's undeniable, yet if the Eisenhower administration wanted to insult every single country from El Paso all the way south through the Land of Fire, it would have not made a better job than this movie. What's even more offensive, is that American's mentality and way to see and treat other nationalities have not changed that much as of today.

They made it look like people in Texas had never even seen a Mexican ever. I guess that Edna Ferber was trying to make a point about racism no matter how ridiculous it was. My god Texas is mostly Mexicans especially where this picture was supposed have taken place.

Ephesians 6:12 New King James Version 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against (A)principalities, against powers, against (B)the rulers of [a]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 2 Samuel 14:17 New King James Version Your maidservant said, ‘The word of my lord the king will now be comforting; for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king in discerning good and evil. And may the LORD your God be with you.’ ” Exodus 20:13 New King James Version 13 “You shall not murder. Romans 6:10 New King James Version For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Romans 4:4 New King James Version 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. Psalm 57:6 NKJV They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah Psalm 56:5-7 NKJV 5 All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. 7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! Revelation 16:6-7 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, And You have given them blood to drink. For it is their just due.” 7 And I heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.” Matthew 24:7 New King James Version 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. Isaiah 24 New King James Version Impending Judgment on the Earth 24 Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants. 2 And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor. 3 The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the Lord has spoken this word. 4 The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left. 7 The new wine fails, the vine languishes, All the merry-hearted sigh. 8 The mirth of the tambourine ceases, The noise of the jubilant ends, The joy of the harp ceases.

Great movie, terrible trailer. Use some of the film's dialogue instead of talking over the damn thing.
