For me, this is the aria that makes or breaks a performance of Tosca. If it's not thrilling, it falls flat for me. He certainly makes it thrilling!

This aria and Gia Mi dicon venal make or break a good scarpia

MAGNIFICO ! SUBLIME ! DIVINO !

uno dei pochi baritoni che in questo brano non si fa sovrastare dall'orchestra. Oggi la voce non si sente mai, si vede solo la bocca aperta del cantante. L'interpretazione di Scarpia da parte di Guelfi è rimasta insuperata, come quella di Amonastro nella Aida.

Fedrico Traina Stoyan Popov aveva una voce ancora più grande da quella di Guelfi . solo due esempi per non perdere il suo tempo prezioso ... mi ricordo la recita di Rigoletto dove nel duetto con Gilda /la Scotto/ lo stesso Popov nel la bemolle finale si ha sentito ''da solo'' ... e il secondo esempio era durante un Don Carlo - Bonaldo Giaotti , l'ultimo basso vero chi aveva una voce meravigliosa nel duetto con Posa faceva ridere il pubblico perché nella sala si sentiva che lo stesso Popov aveva una voce più scura e ampia della voce di Grande Giaiotti . Popov era uno dei rari baritoni nella storia della lirica chi ha cantato all'inizio della sua carriera Figaro e alla fine il repertorio del basso baritono come Boris per esempio... Popov non era un attore molto ''raffinato'' ma nei ruoli come Scarpia, Jago, Boris,Ezio.Macbetto,Nabucco ... era uno dei migliori baritoni degli anni 60-80,questo era il suo repertorio. dal vivo la sua voce sembrava un uragano ... tutto questo non toglie niente della Grandezza interpretativa di Guelfi,anzi ! da anni queste voci purtroppo non esistono più e se esistono non li lasciano cantare . la differenza tra Popov e Guelfi era che Guelfi aveva la fortuna di essere nato in Italia e Popov aveva la sfortuna di esser nato in Bulgaria ... ma dal vivo Popov aveva un registro acuto enorme fin si bemolle acuto, e questo il Grande Guelfi poteva solo sognare ... quando Cappuccilli /Ezio/ cantava il si bemolle finale dopo l'aria faceva ridere quelli che hanno sentito lo stesso si bemolle interpretato dal Popov ... nei finali nel Rigoletto /la naturale finale enorme pieno d'odio!/Ezio /si bemolle eroico,unico dopo Popov non avevo sentito questo si bemolle da nessun baritono/,Jago/ nel duetto con il tenore un la naturale come fulmine.../ etc....durante le sue recite Popov sparava degli acuti strepitosi che lasciavano poca speranza ai suoi colleghi ... qua sul YT Lei può sentire il prologo,il duetto con la Scotto nel Rigoletto etc... i microfoni odiavano la sua voce ... ps. durante la mia lunghissima vita negli anni 1958-78 avevo sentito dal vivo dei Baritoni Veri che avevano delle voci meravigliose proprio come era meravigliosa la voce di Guelfi . da anni mi parlano di Nucci e la compagnia Tutti dei baritoni sbagliati ... i tempi cambiano anche le voci, è quello che volevo dire con le mie storielle ...

The REAL DEAL!!!! For me as good as it gets!!!

Outstanding in roles like this one. Guelfi had the perfect timbre of voice for Scarpia and was certainly in his prime during this time. The sound is ok here but the recording from Covent Garden in 1957 with Guelfi gives an even better representation of his unique voice in this role. Maybe it’s on You Tube as well.

Unfortunately I believe it was not filmed but you are correct, he had a unique voice of Beauty and power and a great actor on stage as well, I was at that performance. I heard him outsing two of the Great Post War Tenors in their prime, both Del Monaco and Corelli, he was a Magnificent Gerard in Chenier, Jack Rance and in Il Tabarro he would be really dramatic, but it was a Performance of Nabucco that I would say that he absolutely nailed himself to the Mast of all the Great Baritones, what a singer his Amonasro was incredible and I heard him in Traviata give a performance of absolutely perfect Legato and phrasing. A Truly great singer, whose like I doubt we will see ever again. They are but little powder puffs today.

Great FREE SINGING RICH BARITONE VOICE. There is something about his posture and how emits his voice real correct vocal emission, clear vowels and rich chiaroscuro.

Magnificent performance - both singing and acting. The recognition of his lustful thoughts in the midst of A spiritual moment just before singing, "Tosca, mi fai dimenticare IL Dio" is subtle as he hides himself for a moment.

Try george london,nicoli herlea both excellent every bit as good and probably all round better baritones,but u just have to love guelfi as scarpia,dont forget gobi his acting skills make up for less volume in voice

Enormous. He was more of a Puccini baritone than a Verdi baritone. The Puccini tessitura is lower. This role is perfect for him. I also love his acting here.

The only other Baritone that I heard in my lifetime who could bring off this wonderful piece of Music was George London, Guelfi like London had a verylarge Instrument and his voice carried in the Biggest Theatres with ease, also with Beauty as well and Histrionically he was magnificent. We are lucky to have these performances of him live to show what a Operatic Voice should be like.

Ho letto da qualche parte, non ricordo dove, che qualche collega diceva che, per la grandezza della sua voce, si poteva dire che Guelfi non era un baritono, ma una coperativa di baritoni!

+HellasItalia4 - la voce più grande che ho sentito dal vivo in teatro era quella di Stoyan Popov chi copriva durante Aida nella scena del trionfo le voci della Dimitrova,Ghiaurov e Nikolov ... dal vivo accanto à Popov il grande Giaiotti faceva pallida figura... mi ricordo che durante La Tosca nel Te Deum si sentiva soltanto la voce di Popov, niente coro e niente orchestra,era davvero impressionante! Popov era uno dei pochi baritoni verdiani chi nella sua carriera ha cantato Figaro e Boris ... poi Popov aveva un registro acuto strepitoso , nel finale di Rigoletto sparava il la naturale finale come una bomba, in fondo della sua gola aveva un cannone ... Guelfi e Popov questi Signori erano mostri sacri, e non erano da soli ...
