@@ChristianVBlue3 Its actually an in-joke on New York City politics, as for decades until the 1990s, you had to win support of the Catholic clergy in order to have enough votes to win election to Mayor, otherwise the Catholics would vote for the other candidate who had the clergy's support. It was a lasting part of NYC politics originating in the late 19th Century along with the Tammany Hall political machine (which was dominated by Catholics from Ireland) and remained an important influence long after local politics had adapted to the decline and disappearance of Tammany Hall in the mid 20th Century.

This is one of the greatest movie scenes of all time....everything about this is perfect,

“I’m Winston Zeddemore, your honor. I’ve only been with the company a couple of weeks, but I gotta tell you, these things ARE REAL. Since I’ve joined these men, I have seen SHIT that’ll turn you WHITE!!!!” The police commissioner’s reaction to this quote makes me laugh every time. Ernie Hudson’s contribution to this movie is supremely underrated. His interview with Janine, the Twinkie discussion, he and Ray’s reverent but eye opening talk in Ecto-1 right before they get arrested are just a few examples of his no bullshit, right on the money delivery of his lines.

The amount of dry humor that comes out of this scene is amazing. This is why ghostbusters works. They don't take it too seriously and they know it's ridiculous but some how they make it work so well.

Cardinal! priest _The mayor addresses him as “Your Eminence” and his hat (zucchetto) and sash are both scarlet, which makes him a cardinal - a ‘prince’ of the Roman Catholic Church; which back then, was still a pretty big deal in New York City, when it had a population that lent heavily towards origins both Irish and Italian._

You _need_ to be a priest to be a bishop (the most significant promotion: deemed to make you a descendant of the apostles; you get your own cathedral and diocese). You _have_ to be a bishop in order to be made a cardinal (politics, talent and ambition). And cardinals are the ones from whom popes are selected (politics, again, and random chance - interpreted by Catholics as “the intervention of the Holy Spirit”). Though, theoretically, the Conclave of Cardinals could choose *any* ordained priest to be pontiff - _The Pope Must Die(t)_ was a 1991 comedy film based on that premise; it’s on KZread and is pretty funny.

Can't remember his name though.....a good actor by all accounts, but not well known. Good minor role in this film though!

nicholai40 having seen these in backwards order, my only beef with mayor Lenny in the sequel is his initial reintro to them. He didn't seem as happy to see them that time. But considering the unintended destruction in this one, I can understand his original skepticism but that bonehead assistant played by Kurt Fuller, seemed just there for comic relief... Too bad that wasn't a requirement with these films hence the genre... But oh well!

For a (at time quite silly) comedy with that uses the formula of big blockbuster film, people can forget how smartly this film is WRITTEN.. The mayors line "You got work to do. What do you need from me?" followed by the shot of the National Guard escorting the Ghostbusters is one of the most perfect transitions to a film's climactic action bit I've ever seen.

Watch Ernie Hudsons (Winston) performance, he doesn't have many lines but everything he does adds to the scene. A proper masterclass. Its a shame the studio cut his role short.

Every character in this scene was just brilliant. They don't do it like this anymore.

Headed for a disaster of Biblical proportion... Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff... fire and brimstone coming down from the skies... rivers and seas boiling... forty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes... the dead rising from the grave... human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... Mass hysteria! Rest in peace, David Margulies (Mayor Lenny), thank you for the laughter and all your fine work as an actor.

Bill Murray on top of his game....the diction, his timing his facial expression...awesome

I love how the play the scene straight. There’s jokes but the conversation is serious. As if it is a scary and unnatural event.

I don't know why but this somehow seems fitting amidst the COVID 19 crisis.... it tickles me every time I watch it....

I've watched this movie a thousands times, and just now caught that line.

Look at Winston's face 2:40 when Venkman says "We go to jail; peacefully, quietly. We'll enjoy it."

Like close encounters of the third kind.. this movie made me BELIEVE when I was a kid.. still does.. 👍

I've seen this movie more times than any other. When VHS was new I rented it so many times that my dad gave up and bought it for me. Its pretty good.

Throughtout the movies and the cartoon you really see how Peter got a degree in pyschology.

Bill Murray adlibbed most of this scene. They didn't know what he was going to come up with next.

I had to wash my brain out with this after I saw that new trailer.

If the film itself does become successful (possibly more so than the originals), then we're headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! 40 years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!

Avatar the Last Airbender probably had the greatest "Awesome Trailer" to "Shitty Movie" ratio ever.

The mayor first kisses the ring of the archibishop then he slaps his cheek like an old friend, and the archibishop is ok with it. This scene looks so perfect.

Jesus Christ. This scene alone is a 1,000x better than anything being made today. It's funny, witty, tense, and impells us forward.
