Ghostbusters 2016 - Caravan Of Garbage

Ойын-сауық

They kept making Ghostbusters movies didn't they. Ghostbusters 2016 acted not as a sequel but in fact as a franchise reboot. Answer The Call as it's sometimes titled brings in an entirely new director and cast as it aimed to capture the magic of the original. Somethings something save New York from an impending supernatural threat. Also they happened to be female and some people did not like it. To put it lightly. Anyways this comment section should be fun thanks for watching!

Fun fact: I had some guys from a high end security firm in my studio, and they told me about the time they were working a private dinner in Toronto. Around the table was Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Ivan Reitman, and a few other people. They were there for about 20 minutes before Bill Murray got up from the table and walked out. As he passed my security friend he muttered “Well that was a waste of time.” Turns out that was the meeting where the OG cast was being informed the studio was going in this reboot direction, and would be holding them all to the contracts they signed when they thought they were doing GB3. Whoopsie!

But on it's own, i think GB2 is a pretty good flick. GB'16 on the other hand: has some funny moments, but i felt was a pretty 'meh' movie overall. It felt like an SNL sketch that just went on far too long. From A+ to F, I'd grade as follows - original GB: A GB2: B- GB'16 C-

My problem with the whole "EVERYBODY CAN BE A GHOSTBUSTER!!" theming that this and even the new film seems to be doing is, yeah? No shit. The whole point of the first movie was these were some schlubs starting a business. The fan idea for decades of retiring the original cast and just moving them up the corporate ladder and franchising the company, always made the most sense from an in-universe stance. You dont need to do multiple intersecting paralel realities or treat the Ghostbuster title like its some super hero power that must be passed on to a new team. Extreme Ghostbusters and the 2009 game were the only pieces of media that seems to understand that concept of the franchise.

  • @Rubberbandfan1

The reason why they were Ghostbusters in the first place is because they were geniuses on the level of Einstein that were capable of creating a thermo-nuclear device that can catch ghosts. So no, everyone cannot be a Ghostbuster. Not just any regular person would know that if you crossed the streams of the proton-packs it could potentially destroy the universe, or stop the gates of hell from opening.

@@Rubberbandfan1 They literally hire on a 4th member who has zero scientific background in the first movie. Hence why I said, the 3 founders would obviously move up the corporate ladder of the company, they started the business, they created the tech, now they can hire out new employees to go out and use it. Same way the video game and Extreme did it.

  • @Rubberbandfan1

@@mr.vidjagamez9896 I get it, but it’s a stretch to say that “anybody could be a Ghostbuster”, when they are carrying a nuclear device on their back that is more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. It takes away all of the things that made the original movies good if they are just going to start a Ghostbusting recruiting business in which they train average joes to use the equipment. What happens when those employees are required to do actual complex scientific experiments, and the original Ghostbusters are dead and gone? The movies were great because they only went in to business because they got kicked out of school, but they became heroes in the end, because they were the only ones who had the ability to stop hell on Earth.

  • @mr.vidjagamez9896

    @mr.vidjagamez9896

@@Rubberbandfan1 I mean you could say that about any technology after the original creators are long dead. The entire premise of Extreme Ghostbusters was Egon training a new team to use the equipment and them figuring out how it operates through the series. Would only make sense that he would pass on the knowledge to others who could understand the science behind it down the line if the company grew. Its not like the automotive industry is hiring random people off the street and telling them "ok you design the engine", they get people with backgrounds to work on that kind of thing, but you still need workers doing the actual labor. I just dont see them being "heroes" in the traditional sense seeing as they specifically are shown operating as a business, even the 80s cartoon continued that idea. Yeah, maybe not everyone could be a Ghostbuster, but its really the same thing as saying not everyone could make it as a police officer, a firefighter or being in the army.

@@Rubberbandfan1 By ‘anyone’ I think the point is it’s a trainable job. Not everyone who flies a starship in Star Trek could build a warp drive. But once the ‘machine’ was built you could hire and train (theoretically) anyone able to absorb the skills of the job or specific smaller jobs surrounding the main job and use the equipment effectively. I use to work in a factory that built race car batteries (they made other stuff, but that was my department). We handled pretty dangerous stuff but everyone handled a tiny part of the job. The engineers designed the systems and broke down the jobs into the individual jobs each person did. Some of the people doing those smaller individual jobs hadn’t gotten past high school diplomas. But they knew facts about some of the processes they were handling because they were trainable in that job.

Ghostbusters II is a lot better than the 2016 reboot, and not for the comedy… it’s the horror elements. The villain is a much bigger threat than the last one in my opinion and it’s a lot scarier than I remember, I mean the decapitated heads in the subway comes to mind and the red room scene. It might be a little cartoonier due to the popularity of The Real Ghostbusters that was airing at the time but I still think it’s a dang good sequel in its own right.

I remember watching this movie and glancing at the clock, realising that I was nearly an hour in and hadn't laughed once. I think I may have cracked a smile at one point, but that was about it. This movie's biggest failing is that its a comedy that just isn't funny. Ghostbusters 2 was a pale imitation of the first, but it had far more humour in it than this. The big thing that was so funny about Ghostbusters is that it was a mix of slapstick and deadpan. It has simple humour that kids could laugh at and complex humour that only adults would understand. Ghostbusters 2 was less successful at this, but it still had it. The 2016 movie thought it was doing the same thing because it had an actor make a queef joke with a straight face. That just showed a complete lack of understanding of the comedy of the original and its repeated throughout the entire film. Its not crap because it stars four women. Its crap because its crap.

And it's not like I took the destruction of Asgard as some serious, Lord of the Rings-style peril anyway. Was just enjoying Cate Blanchett hamming it up, Hulk fighting a mythic wolf and Hemsworth looking so much more engaged and at home in the role than ever before. Louis wasn't actually stupid either, he's taken over by an entity who is unfamiliar with the world. That's where his comedy comes from and has written reasons for it. Ghostbusters 2016 was just poorly and lazily written all around. Almost none of the jokes had to do with what was going on. It was just all random. A classic example of this is Redlettermedia's explanation of Mcarthy yelling at the villian to come get his virginity out of the lost and found. The joke makes no sense because nobody put enough effort into thinking about it. Also I can see how progressive they're thinking is throwing out insults as narrow minded as that. Ghostbusters 1984 is a sci-fi - fantasy - horror film with comedic moments. It was grounded and the characters seemed real. No one was trying to out ad-lib each other. He basically retired after BTTF and just kinda lives a nice life on all the money from that. But he's the guy who allowed the Telltale Game and also allowed the recent Broadway musical. He's very careful and selective about all the BTTF media.

The problem with the 2016 reboot was definitely the comedy, the fact that in the original was that it relied on situational humor the characters were played straight. In the original secretary Janine was an intelligent woman while working as a secretary, Chris Hemsworth's male secretary is played entirely for laughs about how dumb he is.

Without letting the setup dictate the comedic beats, without writing character with real human personalities, and most annoying of all for me the way OTHER PEOPLE in a scene react to something off the wall a character says? Spot on with the character analysis. Modern comedy is terrified to have a "straight man/woman" character who contrasts with the absurdity of a situation. Not everyone has to be a quippy snark, it gets exhausting. Some of the funniest characters ever (like Egon) are the ones that can sell a line that's not funny on paper, but when everyone in the cast is dropping winky-nudgy one liners that important aspect of comedy can't shine through.

I feel you there. I have a similar feeling to "Thor: Ragnarok". Sure, it's a "funny" movie by all accounts, but it's more funny by virtue of just throwing jokes and imagery to the wall and seeing what sticks, and for me, I'm more a fan of more discipline humor. I may not be always laughing, but I'd be laughing stronger than if I was thrown a bunch. It's why I thought Guardians 2 was funnier by comparison. It had it's clunkers here and there, but I got way more laughs than not because they had a touch more discipline to them.

It's not terrified, it's just too lazy. Writing that takes more effort than letting your actors continuously riff and hoping you can craft something comedically well-timed in the editing. A big part of the reason for this is management and production not valuing artists and craftspeople on the most foundational level of the creative side (writers) enough to pay them what's necessary to fund that kind of effort.

Ghostbusters 2 is wonderful and I have no idea why so many dislike it. This film wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good, and in no way is it funnier than GBII. The Vigo stuff alone is funnier than anything in 'Answer The Call' which, by the way, is its actual official title - it's in the credits. Feig explained that the studio wanted this sub-title, he didn't, so this was the compromise.

People are way too harsh on GB2. I agree that 2016 GB isn't a trashfire but it's still not very good, certainly not better than GB2. The first act alone is better- Dana's apartment, the drilling and especially the courtroom scene. "but one time I turned into a dog and they helped me. Thank you."

For me, this falls in the category of “funny SNL character actors in movies that are too much about dicking around for what feels like hours”. And I don’t know if there’s really any that are completely awful to sit through (except for maybe Molly Shannon’s Superstar). And this one is completely fine, with the main notable aspect that it feels completely reworked in post-production to turn it into a more conventional summer blockbuster. Which is funny since the original doesn’t feel much like a blockbuster.

A huge amount of the film is basically just Paul Feig putting people in a room and going "Ok, now be funny!", letting them riff about random stuff for hours with no structure and then cobbling the best bits into scenes. It's why the characters feel so weird and disjointed, and veer wildly between being naturalistic yet slightly quirky (e.g. Wiig, McCarthy and Jones) and operating completely on complete cartoon logic (e.g. Hemsworth and McKinnon). It's an example of very poor implementation of improv.

Yeah for me I can stand them riffing through a movie like that…. I’m not American and don’t watch SNL so maybe its my humour isn’t as simple as that to enjoy it. I can see it appealing to say a Family Guy viewer. There are definitely plenty of examples of taking tv shows or tv style performances and making a funny movie. Ali G did it with that movie, that was all improv and he took that into a movie and made it work. I think its largely just about having characters and stories that actually make some sort of sense and have a logically consistency in tone and characters. Ghostbusters 2016 does not and the jokes are duds giving zero things to keep my attention….

I maintain that the original Ghostbusters was a story about neurodivergents who become celebrated heroes, which is why ATC's Holtzmann is the only character who truly feels like a Ghostbuster. Her combination of odd and brilliant is spot on, and absolutely believable as the kind of person who plays the tech role. But who plays the Ray Stanz role, the ADHD book nerd with an encyclopedic knowledge of the occult? Who is the savvy con, the dealmaker, the Peter Venkman who can weasel, bluff, and charm their way through the logistics of starting a business? Who is the hardworking blue collar outsider who can understand and appreciate these oddballs without judgment and advocate for their worth? You're absolutely right. The other ATC characters just aren't as clearly defined, and the film ultimately suffers for it.

That was only further compounded by the amount of marketing and product tie ins like twinkies and papa John's. It was a rushed cash grab and heartless remake and used "feminism" to try and push back against the overblown and vocal minority of "hate". Ghostbusters and the TMNT films almost follow the same path. First movie was in a rough NYC and was a way better movie than anyone expected while being both serious and funny at the same time. The Sequel had it's bright spots, but was way more commercial/family friendly and really works best as a nostalgic viewing rather than a standalone film. And then the reboot movie comes and it's just too Hollywood. Everything feels super formulaic, comedy feels forced, and the whole thing just looks and feels to sanitary to be NYC.
