"On the square", "on the level", the square hammer itself are attributes of the free masons. There are some tweaks to the meanings like "hiding from the light" which the free masons say as "guided by the light". There are probably more things in the lyrics but that is what I get at first glance.

The lead character in the band is an anti-pope named Pap Emeritus. At this time, he has evolved a couple of times, so he is now Papa Emeritus IV. There is quite humour with this band with quite a dark, serious undertone. Always catchy, always very good song writing.

No, they do not smash the head of the deceased pope, and they never have. I have no idea how this bizarre rumor got started, but that has never been what happens when a pope dies. The only things getting hit with a hammer are his ring and seal. That's it.

I almost didn't bother checking your reaction out after... whatever your first Ghost reaction was... but at least there is some semblance of effort to give them a chance here. Anyway, as someone already suggested, check out "Faith" from the Pale Tour Named Death video. It's essentially a pro-shot tour video with album audio.

Being on the square and being on the level comes from the freemasons. So do the Square Hammer. Tobias wrote this song because he wanted Ghost to have a big opening song. They used it as that for a long time but now they close the shows with this and Dance Macabre. This was Ghost first Billboard number one and Loudwire Magazine named it best metal song between 2010-2020. All instrument except the drums are played by Tobias. Ghost is not a band. For a better understanding of "Square Hammer," we need to go back because previous Ghost's albums established a story-line about the Anti-Christ. In the first album "Opus Eponymous" songs refer to the advent of the Anti-Christ. The birth and the arrival of the Anti-Christ on Earth is the main theme of the second album "Infestissumam". The third album "Meliora" describes establishing Anti-Christ's reign on Earth. "Square Hammer" extends the idea behind the third album. The song is proposing people to swear to the devil instead of god. This sets the notion that the devil is no longer an abstract idea, but rather is an established entity. It also introduces the idea that the devil occupies the spirit of people. I highly suggest Rats as the next song for you to check out. I will absolutely watch and like.

I think you guys should react to "Ritual", it was a hit from their First Album. They first songs have more Doom Metal Influence, but with clean vocals and pop vibes.

And me… And yeah, he is a self-proclaimed Satanist due to his upbringing. Read more about him. What most people say about the sound and lyrics of Ghost is that the lyrics are dark while the music is catchy and even uplifting so it draws people in. Next up to listen to is “Faith”, “Cirice”, “Rats”, “Year Zero” and live version of “Mary on a Cross”.

The song refers to some of the rights and rituals of Freemasonry. I wouldn't read too much into it. They like to tweak people with concepts and religious imagery. *You are showing your Catholic upbringing with the mention of holy water. Haha...😅😂🤣 "Ritual" live in studio is my favorite. Heavy riffs and very catchy!

You guys need to try Cirice so you can see their 1st big mainstream song. It also showcases his range. Or try Call me Little Sunshine. For pop- try Mary on a Cross. For softer side, try Life Eternal or Darkness at the Heart of my Love. For fun, check out their Roky Erickson cover "If you have Ghosts" either the acoustic version or the version of the EP.

You should start from the beginning and with their best song RITUAL! Great band with a great show!

Good reaction. Ghost is successful because they write excellent, catchy songs. The image/lore adds intrigue, but without the songs, they would not be selling out arenas. Lead singer/mastermind Tobias Forge has said the band Ghost is Satanic, but none of the members are. Its a stage persona - similar to Alice Cooper (as you mention). Check out Rats, Cirice or Call Me Little Sunshine.

Cool you picked up the cardinal, which was his next upcoming character. A new for every album. I suggest ‘Cirice’ as next song. ‘Year zero’ (choose the lyrics version, not the video for this one) or the ballad ’He is’.

if you do another Ghost it has to be Circe. there biggest song that won then a grammy. and a great video.

now, to somehow complete a half of the circle :), I would suggest something more edgy and totally different from what you heard so far from them, like "Faith" - from A Pale Tour Named Death kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6qOrdmvoLSnhcY.html .. it really shows their versatility in switching, mixing genres and also, nice writing and playing skills. One of the most infectious riffs I ever heard!

I'd suggest you run the gamut of albums by Ghost, each one has a defined feel to it and is more tuned to a certain era. They've aged up over the years, with the latest, Impera, being more 80's influenced. If you're looking for something heavier and less "pop-py" I would definitely recommend "Faith", or you could do the video for "From the Pinnacle to the Pit" which actually ties together with the "Square Hammer" video quite well. All of their music is awesome in it's own way- if you really want to be confused, do "Mary On a Cross". There's a live video from last year they did after the song blew up on Tik Tok. It's a great song, it's just one of those that will make you scratch your head and think. 😁💀

Ghost is a very theatrical band whose schtick is that they're the devil's church! Literally. They somehow managed to write 5-6 albums worth of catchy bangers all about that singular thing. So in a way, all of their stuff is concept except a few off here and there. The band doesn't take the satanism more than being it's theme/persona, and it's quite campy sometimes!
