This is one of those tracks where your brain convinces you that the off beat is the on - then everything else comes in and you have to re-evaluate your life choices.

LOVE IT! 64 year old full time musician/educator/jazz pianist. Most of my boys(and girls) from my day are gone. Maurice White, Aretha, Natalie Cole, Luthor, Prince, Michael J., James Brown, and on and on and on. These young bloods. ABSOLUTELY LOVE what they're doing. They have done as all things do, and that is they have elevated the level or artistry and musicianship. Such a shame that the music "industry" has changed, you'll never hear this GREATNESS on the radio. Thank God for youtube. Truly amazing. They absolutely have taken things to the next level. I've been a music maniac for all my life. I know it when I hear it. There was a time when Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, others were the sh&t. But music evolved. along came Miles Davis many many others, this right here represents one of the MANY facets that music, great music is today. Don't wanna make this comment much longer, but I just am reminded of SO many innovators, from Steely Dan, to Sly Stone, to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to Prince to James Brown, that literally CHANGED the game. Listen carefully, this right here is part of the next evolution of music. The Iphone if you will to what lies ahead.

Mr. Brown - the music that decorates your life has been hugely instrumental in mine. We hope to keep our ears and eyes open for music that moves the soul and blesses the heart. For me, as long as the music has a backbone, style and groove, I'm willing to invest my time. Thank you for the musical knowledge and wisdom that you no doubt impart to the next generation.

He comes in/accents on the off-time a lot - not everyone is gonna appreciate the nuances. You gotta be able to feel out half times on 16ths to really get it, I didn't always have a feel for it. Listen to enough Hussain on Tabla, Victor Wooten, and Meshuggah and then it becomes a lot more obvious. Indian Solfege is what took my drumming to the next level and it's pretty much an infinite learning curve. Learning to play bass might be the best way to get really good at drumming. Wooten's Bass Class+Solfege is pretty much the future of all dynamic music.
That intro is amazing. When the ensemble came in, I thought: huh, the downbeat isn't at all where I thought it was. And just then, I see the guitarist abort his first attempt at joining in and break out in laughter. Maybe he hadn't been clued in either, or maybe he was just deliberately playing along. Either way, it exemplifies that if you weren't at least half expecting this, you (i.e. me) have a lot to learn about funk.

Never mind I think I got it. I think Mono’s riff starts the and of 4. If you count on the numbers in parentheses or the upbeats, than it works, and you come in right on one with Sput. 1 (1), 2 (2), 3 (3), 4 (4). Pretty cool! It’s amazing how Sput and Mono feel the 1.
