Regarding Kaisarion... Kaisarion is the son of Caesar and Cleopatra, and he represents the fall of the Greco-Egyptian society (the Ptolemaic Kingdom) and the rise of Rome from a republic to one of the most important empires in history. That combined with the philosopher Hypatia who stands for many things, the end of Christians being persecuted by pagans and the start of pagans being persecuted by Christians, the subjugation of women, skeptics, heretics at the hands of Christian mobs, the Church's takeover and weaponization of philosophy.. I love this song

And I loooove that super long fadeout on Watcher cause it deally drives home that idea of a society losing touch with classical ideas of divinity because of their technological advancements, and so they keep searching and searching... only getting farther and farther away...

@@Lazarus_Cardinalis It feels like continuing to look for divinity with more and more complex science, despite science practically disproving divinity. Divinity becomes the answer to every question you cannot (or refuse to) answer. Essentially, shouting "GOD WILLS IT" in the modern age to justify refusing to progress as a society.

Not to mention Hypatia got assassinated in the Caesareum, meaning the song title is actually a reference to two different things that both make sense for : the song in itself for hypatia's story, and the whole album concept with the notion of building an empire.

First of all, I LOVE how you've matched your outfits to the last 2 album covers, it's so visually pleasing. I binged-watched your 3 ghost album reactions yesterday and I yelped when I saw the notification today haha. Second of all, I really appreciate how you're analyzing Ghost from all angles, paying attention to the lyrics, musical arrangements AND album concept is something I rarely see people do when they react to this band, it's refreshing to see the theater kid in you jump out in excitement. In a way, it's like I'm rediscovering these albums by watching you because you take the time to dissect all the little intricacies that Tobias lays out for us to interpret. I'm glad to see that you're enjoying the Ghost lore as well and I can't wait for you to listen to their early eras, back in the day when they fell in the category of doom metal lol. Love from a ghestie in Venezuela🙋🏻‍♀️

STOP THIS IS LITERALLY THE SWEETEST MESSAGE EVER🥹🥹 thank you so much! I cant help but wonder if Tobias has dabbled in a bit of theatre or movies before, he has a creative mind that I tend to see in directors and actors! He creates these albums like paintings in my own opinion, and I always try to pay attention to as much as I can, because the lyrics, story and composition all match each other so well!! Thank you for noticing the clothes hehe. It was on purpose, but I didn’t want to bring attention to it ;) glad someone caught it though!! Much love to you!❤️❤️

I love hearing insight from people in countries living outside of the US, where I live, because they provide so much clarity. My thoughts are so much echoed in what you say, and it feels so good to find support and know that others don't buy into the bullshit that people in power are trying to feed us and everyone else. Thank you for putting your views out there for people to be able to hear because they need to hear it. I love Ghost, Tobias is such an amazing musician. He can convey so much within a beautiful song. Your analysis is amazing, and I love seeing your emotional reactions. When I first listened to this album last year, I was on my way to Canada to visit my boyfriend. It was a bittersweet experience because I was so overjoyed to hear it, while also realizing the meanings behind the songs, knowing I'd return home to the reality conveyed within them. This is a very difficult time to be alive, living within the US, especially living in the Southern US. It's like being beaten down every day while being told to just smile and be grateful for what you have. It's like being poisoned slowly, gently fed more and more every day until you finally meet your end. It's terribly depressing and awful, gotta say. It's very scary and not something that I want to continue living through forever, so I am going to move somewhere else when I have the funds. But at least I have Ghost, and if you have Ghost, you have everything. 🖤👻 Thank you again for this, and I look forward to consuming your other reaction videos.

I have never seen anyone here on youtube clock the sinister undertones to Darkness at the Heart of my Love, I was grinning like an idiot when I saw you realise. It's probably my favourite song on this album just for how complex it is under the veil of what basically sounds like a simple Live Aid style pick me up comfort song. And it works as such a great parallel to Call Me Little Sunshine, with Call Me being more blatantly satanic but providing words of comfort that actually sound legitimate, where Darkness is chokingly positive but always eluding to the whispers behind the words. Very well done! ☺️

  • @MrJfortun
    @MrJfortun Жыл бұрын

Spillways are there to release the pressure on a damn..here we are talking about a release of darkness, not the intake of darkness. My very first impression was that Tobias was referring to cutting, but I think my first interpretation was too literal, yet it's hard for me to shake that dark image with this pretty amazing song. The release of that stress/darkness does not always take a healthy form, even if the need for release is real. Call Me Little Sunshine is a reference to Aleister Crowley. Also the cover of Impera is an homage to a famous photograph of Crowley. Watcher In The Sky is the last track of side A on the vinyl release of Impera, making that long fadeout a bit of a nod to a pretty classic way of ending the side of a vinyl album. Regarding Griftwood. I think the song is about anyone Pence-like, religious or not. Someone selling salvation (spiritual or secular) in order to seize power over others. The middle-eight is one of my favorite bits of music in all of Ghost's work. As for Respite- I have read more than a few pieces on Jack the Ripper where his crimes marked the end of a romanticized view of the Victorian Era, the end of an empire...

Another element to the fade out in Watchers I read somewhere is it can symbolize the fruitless nature of trying to find god, as it does the fade on a repeat of "searchlights looking for the watcher in the sky."

You're reactions are so great and analytical. I really enjoy how you interpret the music because in every reaction you've done so far (I binged all of them today) it reminds me of when I first listened to these albums when they came out. I even learned a lot about Griftwood from your reaction lol. I had no idea it was specifically about Mike Pence and feel kinda dumb now especially because I live in the US. Also, I wanted to let you know since you plan on going through the first two albums, Monstrance Clock (which is on Infesstisumam) was played last at every live performance for a long time (its not played anymore as far as I know). I get a huge sense of nostalgia from that song, and I'm sure anyone who saw them live back when they used to end on it does too. AND they have secret songs on some of the albums too, if you're interested in listening to more Ghost in your free time there is Zenith which was a hidden track on the vinyl of Meliora and Prequel had two covers on the CD release being Avalanche and It's a sin.

Forge's craftsmanship really comes to the fore on Impera. In an odd way I sort of think of Ghost as a modern Steely Dan. Meticulously planned and executed music played by steller musicians (who are not necessarily in the touring band) under the direction of an auteur.

Hi Hedvig. I must say that i'm impressed. You nailed many of the songs on first listen. Not many do that. But you seems to be a girl with "huvudet på skaft" as we say in Sweden. Really smart for them who doesn't understand swedish. I especially liked how you picked up on the darkness of the album. I seen so many comments that "this song is so good and catchy" but no one gets that it's actually some really dark shit (quote from Tobias) in there. Very good work. For me Impera is not a rock album. It's THE rockalbum. I been listening to rock music in many forms since 1984 but no one has delivered a album like this for me. It's just mind blowing. There is so much i could go on forever but that would be rather boring so instead i give you one example. Look in the lyrics for "Twenties" You will find the word that whispers "Kiss my" followed by the singing word "assassinate". Combine those two words and you will find out what Tobias thinks of fascist leaders 😉. Ooh and again. I last said that Tobias daughter Minou sings on Ashes. This time you hear her as one of the girls in the choir for Twenties. Yes it's her with friends (and daughter's of people who worked on the record who knows Tobias personally) who sings the "Twenties!" part. Again good work and i will be looking forward to you going back to the roots of Opus Eponymous next time 🤘

With how much you are getting into Ghost, and Swedish rock in particular. I would highly suggest Sabaton. They are considered power metal, but they have certainly carved out their own subgenre of metal. I am going to suggest their absolute masterpiece of an album, Carolus Rex. It’s all about the height of the Swedish Empire from 1618 to 1718. It’s absolute God tier and every song has a Swedish version that has different lyrics, more of a personal viewpoint in each song than an outsider observing.

I'm sure it has/will be mentioned by others but Spillways is kind of the opposite of what you said. It's about letting go of that darkness inside of you because you can't hold it in any longer. From Tobias: "This is an elegy for the darkness that most people have inside. When you have a dam, spillways are the run-offs so the dam won’t overflow. That darkness inside us needs to find its way out." Call Me Little Sunshine is one of those clever lyric ones. The name comes from a quote from Alistair Crowley: “The Beast 666 only means sunlight. You can call me ‘little sunshine.’”. The album cover for Impera is based on a picture of him as well. But yeah. I think it's also "Little Sunshine" because the devil is the light. Lucifer itself means "morning star" (as mentioned in He Is as well) so there's another link to light. Personally, I don't like Twenties. It just doesn't do it for me at all which is a shame as I love the rest of the songs on the album. I assume you can see why the song is so divisive! I there was some speculation in places that this might replace Mummy Dust on the tour as a song they release the sister bucks to. For Darkness I could actually hear it as a slightly different Eurovision song. It has that sort of vibe for me (maybe without a few of the lyrics lol). Griftwood is my favourite song on the album as it's just so, so catchy. I'd love to see it live (I think they just did it on the US leg of the tour) just to hear people shout the "Yes!". My 2nd favourite is Hunter's Moon but I'd agree that you can tell it wasn't written for the album as it does sound out of place. I'm looking forward to see what you make of the first 2 albums. They'e so, so different to this one. Much more rough and less polished and much more "metal". You'll have to make sure to cover the EPs too as if/when you see Ghost you'll likely hear Square Hammer (from Popestar) and probably either Kiss the Go-Goat or Mary on a Cross (from 7" of Satanic Panic).

AHHH MY NORWEGIAN BRAIN THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE DAMS LMAO. Oh well, blaming it on being bilingual hehe. Thank you so much for your insight! I’ve noticed that Twenties seem to be a lot of peoples least favorite song, but for me, it really stands out with the aggressive nature and message! Ugh, I love Griftwood! I love it more and more the more I listen to it, this album is just epic in every way! With more time I think it might replace Meliora as my second favorite album! I LOVE that you think DATHOML sounds like a Eurovision song, you’re totally right!! CMLSS is also growing a lot on me, and researching more about it makes me love it even more!

Def far better than my Norwegian (I've decided to try and learn as I was born there - and I was told Norwegian is one of the easiest languages for native English speakers lol)! I'm glad you said you can see Darkness as a Eurovision song too. A lot of people I've said it to find it quite insulting but there are some great Eurovision songs so it's nothing to be ashamed of in my opinion. Tobias himself has said Abba is one of his influences. Have you seen any of the music videos of the songs you've heard yet? CMLS isn't my style but Rats has some fun dancing.

I think the last song is meant to be pronoucned Respite on the Spite-al-fields. I take it to mean a time when the remains of the empire rests on the fields on which it stood which are now filled with the spite, hate and derision it garnered from it's contemporaries when it began to deteriorate and eventually crumble. The song also evokes some sort of relief about the fact that it's over since there's room for something new. Whether that is better or not is just like anything in the future - unknown. There's an easy answer to what worldly current empire it might refer to, considering when the song was most likely written - at least lyrically - but it probably, just like other songs on Impera, can be applied generally as well.

You literally in real time of watching this helped me put together the pieces for this album's song order, cause I was listening to the album and I was like "Hmm I wonder what the inspiration was behing putting Darkness at the Heart of My Love right after Twenties". Hit me like a brick to the head, its all propaganda tactics for the empire. (Now, keep in mind this is all just what the album means to me lol) Impera is all about the empire and what it will do to keep propagating itself as long as it can, so of course all of the songs sound like they should be played to a large crowd; the empire is singing to its citizens. All of these songs are just using different tactics to keep the citizens' support and attention and the longer the album goes on, the closer the empire gets to ending, and the more obvious it gets with its tactics. So by the time we've hit Twenties, the empire has gone into more and more bombastic rhetoric to hold onto power and for me, it makes perfect sense as a manipulation to have Darkness at the Heart of My Love right after. Hearing it in the context of just like, "Oh shit, the empire is trying to Cirice us", Tobias is evil for that lol. Having a song like Life Eternal that to me is so emotional and genuine in its intimacy and vulnerability, and then have a song like this that feels as though its trying to manufacture that feeling in a public as a false intimacy designed to maintain connection and power, aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh dude I love it

DUDE, I NEVER MADE THIS CONNECTION, WOW!! Every time I listen to Meliora, I imagine a black mass situation. Both opus and infest are cult meetings, Prequelle is inside of a safe house (like, from the plague lol), but I was never able to work out what IMPERA sounded like to me! BUT ITS A PROPAGANDA CONCERT OMG The aggressiveness and harasses of Twenties is so daunting all of a sudden, and then it’s a COMPLETE 180 when Darkness comes along. ITS A LITERAL MANIPULATION, YOU ARE SO CLEVER!! Thank you for this comment, it made me see the album in a completely different light!

I Challenge you to go back to Tobias' two previous bands. The "Roots of Ghost". They're called Repugnant, which is a deathcore band and shows another side of Tobias and his love for music in general. And then Subvision, which I believe is Ghost before Ghost. That band is the one he made the founding song of ghost, "Stand by Him" from the Opus Emponymos album. Too heavy for Subvision but the same vibe and a bit darker. Both bands show flair of the occult in them, Subvision is very light in it. I became a massive fan of Tobias from Ghost and found Subvision through my efforts to understand him. HIGHLY recommend!!

With regards to your excellent discussion around the lyrics of 'Twenties', i don't know if you missed it but in the first verse he says "For the reich to come to fruition", which obviously is a reference to fascism but more specifically the Nazis. I feel like the whole song could basically be summed up as a reference to fascist rhetoric, and that Tobias is comparing the political situation in the 2020s to the 1920s and pretty blatantly admitting that we're seeing some worrying similarities. With regards to Griftwood, i have speculated that it's sort of a made-up word? All i can think of is that it has something to do with grifting, or being a grifter.
