This song is basically the Devil meeting someone on their own level. Being relatable to them and understanding, rather than being seen as this big greater being that you're supposed to live up to; he comes down to your level and shows you that you're not alone. The Devil doesn't have to be seen as an evil character. Sometimes, honestly, when a god is seen as a higher and greater being, the Devil saying these words and being this relatable is much more comforting than having to improve one's self just to be recognised. Sure, it could be seen as the Devil leading someone to his side but when it's under these terms, that he accepts you for who you are and doesn't expect you to live up to standards other than your own, a lot of people, including myself, would prefer to follow him or at least his ideology, in comfort that we are accepted and loved without having to comply to someone else's life standards.

I really like Sori's interpretation. This song is catchy and an easy listen, and it's much nicer to hear it as a person speaking to another truly seeing them. Straight up, it's the Devil's Pope speaking. Much of Ghost's material is not presented as the devil speaking, or in praise of the devil. It's more of a satirical poke at how most sects of Christianity work. How the belief is spread. A commentary on how dangerous blind faith is.

  • @bradkneely2798

If you can hear those lyrics and not realize that this empathetic voice is preying upon a person who's life is in turmoil then your disregarding a huge part of the dynamic of the song, stripping it down to fit into some oddly shaped romanticism hole that you've carved for it.Listen to the music. Even it suggests with its creepy, minor arpeggiated intro to the double "timpani" shots that mark the changes in the verse with its own "thunder", foreshadowing the mention of thunder in the next line. It's obvious that darkness is afoot (regardless of the identity of the speaker, even though Forge is taking a shot at the church here. Cirice is an old English version of the word church so it's really a no brainer.) Don't cheapen everything by imagining it's all make out songs. There's already alot of those. No offense. Just my opinion.

Since one of my colleagues did an interview with Tobias Forge recently, I will just post some excerpt here to see how his relationship to religion is (sorry for potential errors in translation, I was too lazy to translate sentece by sentence from german and just threw it into google translator): Small topic change. In an interview you recently did with Revolver, you said that you turned away from religion early on. Then all this symbolism at GHOST. One question that came up in the newsroom was: What would you do if you were the real pope? So if you had the power over such a powerful and potentially evil organization as the Catholic Church? (Long pause) Me, uh ... That's a good question (pause). The Church and the Vatican are undoubtedly based on a heritage that they maintain, that causes many problems for us in the Western world and that I think they could erase. I personally do not think that the church is bad per se. I'm not a militant atheist or something. I believe that a certain amount of hope and imagination is good for us. I think that certain values are useful in society. The problem is that many of these values have been taken and patented for themselves. Your copyright on it. Everyone knows that you should not hit people in the face. What I think I would do first would be to turn churches into museums. They should be protected because they are part of our cultural heritage. So I do not want to burn down churches. From churches that were built in the sixties and seventies, so only modern concrete blocks, you could make youth centers, or bars. Turn them into something meaningful. Then I would probably suggest a serious debate about why I think marijuana is better than alcohol. Marijuana makes people happy and makes them nice to each other. Alcohol causes people to punch each other in the mouth and rape. Ultimately, I want people to be nice and relaxed (pause). Yes, these things are on my first day on the agenda. Of course, many principles would have to be changed, but this is the short version. After all, it does not take churches to have a sense of togetherness. There was a good example after a GHOST concert recently. There a fan collapsed and later died. A GHOST fan club then launched a crowdfunding campaign for his family. The goal was $ 1,000. When I looked earlier, the stand was already at almost $ 9,500. Does it make you proud to have created such a helpful community? It makes me very happy to see that people are so compassionate. Most of the people I meet and talk to are very warm and very human. That's the irony of the whole. I think that the message I want to convey with GHOST is much more human than anything the shitty Vatican ever did. Not just because of us, but above all because the people who matter are so life-affirming. I do not know how many people I've met who told me that they were already suicidal or stuck in life crises and the music helped. What could be more fulfilling than that? We want people to be happy. I think Bob Dylan once said that art is something that inspires people to create art themselves. And if that's the basic essence of art, I have to say that I'm extremely satisfied, because so many people come to our shows and bring us drawings, sculptures, everything. These are boxes full of gifts that we have together after each tour. Or all the things that are posted online. I just forgot what I was trying to do with it. But for being a "bad" band, we seem to be part of a very good movement. A very well-meaning, very human, very positive movement. I think that's a funny paradox if you look at what the Vatican is saying. Of course they would be against what we do because we are "evil". But our fans are probably happier than they are. I think their method is wrong. They make people feel guilty because they are not doing enough. Whatever that means. Do not pay enough. Do not regret it enough. Probably not paying enough. Yes exactly. But what you should not forget is that GHOST as a band is basically a business. Not less than the Vatican. You are selling a product. Yes, we sell a product. They do that too. You just pack it differently. Everyone knows that they sat down in Nicaea in 325 and put together the package now known as the Bible to control the Christian movement in Rome. This was definitely a commercial plan. The result has since been used constantly by people who exploit others and use them to their own advantage

This song is actually about churches, cirice on old English is "church", it is saying how religion has thought humans how broken and bad they are and that they need to be with the religion to be good and whole again, if not we will be forever lost.. Now from my pov (I don't believe in god) religion is a really dumb thing, but I can see that it can keep people grounded and thats why I think its also a good thing to have, so people have some form of fear of losing their chance to "heaven"..to me religion is really dumb if you take it seriously, I can take it methaphorically that the whole thing about god and devil is actually talking about god and devil in humans themselves, but to actually believe that biblical stories are reallity is beyond moronic and ur nothing but a sheep that is blinded by a methaphorical narrative. Vortiac You misunderstood me..I never said once that you shouldnt believe in something..but people dont understand that believing in something is not saying that they know it exists..all Im saying is that religion shouldnt insist on what is, but rather on what could possibly be..since believing in something isnt the proof for existence.. -Now the reason im saying this is because of number of times I was ridiculed by complete idiots about not believing.. like actual sheep, blinded by religion, so delusional by the reality that they were given, rather that the one they came to know..religion class was trying to MAKE us believe, to force opinions, some guy on the street giving away papers for some religious play (who was on religious steroids to say lol, a fanatic) was disgusted when we said, nah sry we are not huge believers.. I dont mind religion as long as its not forced and as long as it is not trying to convey certain things as facts, when clearly science has proven otherwise..just dont force, thats what Im trying to say..sry for a biblically long paragraph xD :)

GHOST (previously known as GHOST B.C. as in Spirit Before Christ)... Greatly underrated band. They're not truly "Satanic" but make fun of silly parts of the religions. That many of them have the same quirks and flaws. Like bands that reflect on society. GHOST raises a mirror to Religion. Including "Satanism". They don't avoid certain chords or notes. They don't avoid 5th, 6th (Angel Chords) and 8th chords (The Gabriel chord). They don't avoid Octives (8 Arch Angels). They're not trying to reinvent 13th Structure (symbolic of the day of the month Queen Elizabeth executed Catholics).

metalequine There was already a band named Ghost registered in the U.S. the band had to buy the copyright. The U.S. band had done very little so it wasn't difficult or particularly expensive. It was an issue of finding the owner of the name. Probably took them to a nice dinner, took care of paperwork, left the guy a decent check, Backstage Passes for life and a case of Carlsburg Beer with a handshake.

Tobias has stated he is a Satanist. His music definitely reflects this as well. Satanist's do not believe in a literal Satan, and what Ghost does as a band is a true embodiment of what satanism is about. The rejection and often scrutiny of controlling religions and the praise of self. Do as thou will (as long as it is not harmful to others). Satanism can be slightly different depending on which you adhere (the satanic temple or church).

I'm in awe of the depth of your analysis of this song! You have really made me think! I'm an agnostic leaning towards atheism, but even though I don't really have faith (I have tried, it didn't work out), I'm doing my best to be a good person and always think of others, not just myself or my family. I think it is human, no matter what your personal view of life is. I have Christian and spiritual friends and I respect their beliefs deeply, because in the end their view of life is so close to mine. You sound a lot like my friends, the kind of religious people I could befriend easily. I think your analysis of this song is pretty much on point. It's not simply a song about devil's deeds, but about the abuse of power in general. When I first discovered Ghost, I was absolutely amazed how brilliant their songwriting was (I strongly recommend Meliora, their masterpiece so far. Their latest album Prequelle is great, but not as good). But at the same time I was upset with their lyrics and image. As an agnostic, I don't like it when any kind of religious (or nonreligious) agenda is pushed with music, be it Christian, Satanic, or whatever. So I had to watch and read some interviews of Ghost members. They seemed to be very level-headed people and the singer had a great sense of humor. I understand that doesn't mean he is not a Satanist, but I can agree with many things he has said in the interviews. So far I don't have a problem with his view of life and I can take Ghost's music and gigs as a form of amusement. I also feel their music is resonating strongly with the current affairs of the world. I think music does not really affect the state of the world, but the state of the world affects music. You get what you order. I just wanted to say this because so many people were recommending Ghost to you because they want to see your reaction to music that appears to be very Satanic. TL;DR IMO you can be a fan of Ghost, no matter what your religion or view of life is.

22:51 What Vin says here, and how Sori gets *very* emotional, evoked a strong emotional and a intellectual response in me. In a nutshell, the saying fits: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." And, to quote the *entire* lyrics of Napalm Death's 1987 recognized-by-Guinness-World-Records classic song You Suffer: "You suffer-but why?"

That's exactly what I was talking about in one of my earlier comments about similarities between Christianity and Satanism. The concept remains the same but it can be named (or ascribed) differently. The agent that sees the thunder in your heart that everyone overlooks can be the devil (as meant in the song) but it can also be God, if you choose so. For a Satanist God is the uncaring tyrant who doesn't understand your nature and Satan is your ally who gets your pain. For a Christian Satan is the deceiver who pretends to side with you and God is the one who knows you better than you know yourself and loves you the way you are. Same stuff, different definitions.

There's a difference between what the song means and what one think it means. If you feel or think something else than the other, it's just preferences and opinions. There is no right or wrong when it comes to ones own opinion on what art or music for example feels or makes you think. If Sori feels like it's a love song, then it is, in her mind, and nothing should try to change it, imo :) PS: Ghost, Zenith. A great one.

as many people have already pointed out, 'Cirice' means church in old english. In my opinion, the song is about men of the church taking advantage of hopeless, vulnerable people ('Cant you see that you're lost.. without ME?'). Even if you're christian, that message should still speak to you since I'm sure no christian would in their right mind ever be supportive of such acts.

Ha ha! You broke the code. This is why I think Ghost is so awesome because while the hardcore metalhead disregard them as being commerical they are the best representation of the Devil because of their seductiveness. I hear the lyrics "Are you ready to swear right here, right now before the Devil?" sung while going for commercial break during the NFL football game and I cannot believe how a song like that got through. But if you sugar coat things everything can be swallowed. Just like John Lennons 'Imagine' which is anti-nationalist and anti-religion but is played by church bells.

I know you guys like to see the lyrics when you listen to the songs but you really have to watch the official videos, for the songs that have them. Some things in the videos will answer a lot of your questions. Also, after, look up what Tobias himself explains regarding the real meaning(s) of the lyrics. Also they are not technically really satanists. The story behind Ghost and the various characters created by Tobias is very intricate. Each album has a theme and is part of the evolution of the story. There are also mini episodes, separate videos, that are like a movie which you have to watch along with listening to the albums in the correct order. I am a brand new fan and it took a while for me to realize the complexity of Tobias Forge's complete creation. I do like your videos and it is interesting to hear your interpretations and discussion. Thank you!

Simon Harris there is no “nitpicking” he made a statement. He’s implying that believers couldn’t possibly understand loneliness and desperation. He’s stating that Satan has a unique and exclusive understanding of an emotion or feeling. It’s a very pointed and one sided statement. I’m presenting that the one sidedness of his statement is flawed.

first of all, thank you for you videos! I'm not a christian and I don't even know in what I believe, but I really enjoyed your point of view, its really nice to see a video like that, different interpretations, because I feel like if I was talking to both of you about the song, and since I don't have many friends to do this, its great! And its also a great exercise to continue learning english! Thank you!!

I love this song, as a Christian myself, because to me it describes the mentality of toxic church atmospheres. As I grow older, my relationship with my religion has changed, over and over. When I was younger, I ate this attitude up. The all-encompassing acceptance sounds great at first, but it keeps you from growing as a person. I went though a phase in my life where I completely shunned organized churches, because I was in horrible pain, but it never felt like my (multiple) churches really cared. It was more about observing the proper forms, going to bible study, going on this mission. It was astoundingly lonely, considering I was surrounded by people who should have been my "flock". This is where the devil really insinuates himself, I believe. The lyrics "I can feel the thunder" offers a one-to-one connection that I believe a lot of people are seeking, but never find in churches today. The idea that someone sees you, just you, and all that you are going through, that's really appealing. You guys rock. (And Sori, I hope you get to interview Trivium someday soon!)

It's not actually about the devil, it's about how a doctrine has imprisoned a woman "Can't you see that you're lost without me?"
