Ghost - All Albums Ranked and Reviewed

Музыка

Ghost are not a new band although many older rock fans may see them as such.Their first album was released back in 2010 and has a raw NWOBHM vibe to it and also reminds be very much of Blue Oyster Cult especially the period between the first album and Spectres.
However Ghost are not Blue Oyster Cults clones they are their own band and I feel they will just get bigger and bigger as they attract more fans from other genres. At the time of recording this video their latest album was already at the top of the USA album charts. This is a incredible achievement for a band where each member is anonymous and simply referred to as nameless ghouls! The world needs another spectacular larger than life rock band and Ghost fit the bill perfectly. With KISS about to retire and Ramstien also getting on a bit, the time is right for this band from Sweden to rise to the occasion.
In this video I rank the 6 albums so far and also include one of the EPs. The music is heavy, commercial, epic, PROG, Pop and macabre!
I think the key to their success is the depth of their vision which all comes down to the lead singer Tobias Forge who obscures his identity behind the character "Papa Emeritus. His vocals are so melodic and harmonious they deflect from the heavy riffs and rock background. Following their journey through the current albums I can see them experimenting and not being tied down to a specific sound but at the same time keeping their original fans as they progress.
Stream the latest album and then get ready to buy it!

Great to hear you reviewing and ranking Ghost! I got into them at the start after listening to a sampler compilation cd (Classic Rock magazine I think?)which included the Ghost track `Ritual`. This song has one of my favourite guitar outro`s of all time! Incidentally I also discovered The Devils Blood and Blood Ceremony bands I believe from the same free sampler compilation. My Ghost albums ranking if I may - 1.Ghost (debut album) 2. Impera 3. Prequelle (this might have been second if they`d included the two tracks from the `Seven Inches of Satanic Panic`) 4. Meloria (this was number two in my list until quite recently!) 5. Infestissuman (still not keen on this one) I also particularly love the track `Square Hammer` from the Popestar EP. Talk about catchy! Best wishes to you Phil

Hi Phil, I had heard the name of the band but wrote them off (without hearing anything) as a Scandi Black Metal outfit. Joe Elliott played a few tracks on his Planet Rock show. Really liked what I heard and snapped up the bands latest 'Impera' for £8.99 at my local HMV. I am impressed and will probably delve into Ghost's back catalogue.

Popestar got me into the band with sqaure hammer and nocturnal me. It might be my #1 just for those two. But I have to consider it is half covers But more recently infestissumam has been my favorite. Opus is also up their. I don't think this band has put out a single bad album making this the hardest ranking I have ever done. For example I know my slipknot album ranking and that will never change. But for ghost, that is a difference. It changes every day. 6. If you got ghosts (it's a cover album so I couldn't put it above original work) From this point on I love all of these 6. Popestar 5. Prequelle 4. Impera 3. Melora 2. Opus imponinus 1. Infestissumam

Ghost fan here. Glad to hear you love the new album, and are so enthusiastic of the band! I feel like they should be the biggest band in the world right now that came out after the 2010s. To me the songwriting and catchiness of the songs are top notch. So cool to hear you mention the live album (so old school rock fan of you!) as most people don't talk about that one much. I don't know why so many older rock fans can't seem to get in to them more, I thought u would be the same, so I'm glad to see the enthusiasm. My list is: 1. Meliora 2. Opus Emponymus 3. Impera 4. Prequelle 5. Infestissuman And check out some of their tracks that aren't on their albums (on youtube or streaming if u don't want to buy). Check out the 2 tracks on the "Seven Inches of Satanic Panic" single which are called "Kiss The Go-Goat" and "Mary On A Cross", their cover of the Beatles "Here Comes The Sun", the cover of Pet Shop Boys "Its A Sin", the song "Zenith", and "If You Have Ghosts (Roky Erickson cover)" from the EP you didn't buy. And check out the acoustic version of the song "Jigolo Har Megiddo (Live Acoustic)" on the Harddrive Radio channel on youtube. Keep up the good work Phil!

Never really get these guys. They are very talented agree. The first albums were much darker and in someways lost a lot of fans, but hats off clever marketing etc and a change of direction has worked. Good luck to them, I won't slag them off, just not me. I am a big melodic death metal and black metal fan. Will be interested to see how they get on.

Hello Phil, A brilliant band, indeed. I completely agree with your comments and observations. A couple of notes: When I first saw Tobias(Papa) without the mask/makeup, I had a good laugh because he looks like Rick Astley !! Also the new album opens and closes with a chord progression very similar to one from a song by the great Ric Ocasek called "True Love" from the "this side of paradise" album, which ends with a reprise of the same progression(great album)...Check it out. It would have been nice if there was an instrumental or two on the new one, but I also think that they are all great albums for the same reasons that you mentioned. Cheers

Ghost were not what I expected either. The sound belies the image. I’m not into satanism and all that cobblers, but at the end of the day, it’s entertainment and that’s what Ghost deliver and HOW! My ranking worst to first is exactly how they were realised. They get better with every release. Their new album is ASTONISHINGLY good. (Except the song twenties which is the worst song they have ever done). The ghost cross over audience is huge too. If you got to their concerts, there’s male, female, young, old and black and white. They unite people better than any politician ever could. Long Live Ghost.

I have heard them on a couple of tracks. Not taken with them and not sure why. The issue I have is that I am forever playing catch-up with established artists and it's hard to keep up when I have limited funds. I do buy some new artists and would say I love Electric Callboy from Germany and they have been around since 2010. I do listen to some female metal artists from Japan and my fave is Aldious who have two guitar players that utilise twin lead solos. They have also been around since 2010. The worst offender for saying Rock is Dead is Gene Simmons. I shall give Ghost a listen on the streaming.

*sigh*. Okay. I'm an oldie, 50 is well into the rear view mirror. Honestly, I don't have the energy for this stuff. I still listen to some Hard Rock, but it's legacy stuff I've known since the 1970s, 1980's, etc. I don't seek this high energy music any longer. Not as a rule. I listened to some of Ghost's music, and watched a bit of a live performance. I found their masks quite odd, because the music I heard didn't match the visuals. It looks like a metal/prog blast, and instead seems to be melodic rock. If I had to compare them to someone, I'd refer to Live and their debut album. Remember them? Where Ghost seem to have a leg up is in the production. From what I heard, the production doesn't seem too squashed, which gives the impression of being more subtle and nuanced than what we've grown used to with rock today. But I can't say I'm going to get Ghost's music because honestly, I'm not the target audience. Masks, religious iconography, melodic rock - how many times have I experienced that in my musical life? It just feels..... used up. I think this is an age thing.
