I love this whole scene because John is beginning to see how screwed up this whole institution is. And how close it is to all detonating.

It’s pure fiction. The traditions at Balmoral are like any well thought out Scottish clan wedding in Scotland. They just did this schtick when they were up there . Plus reversal balls are a thing in the upper class society on estates all through Europe. That said they died down by the 80’s.

OMG, I am from a small village in central Scotland and had to so this type of dancing (ceilidh) for gym class, it was really fun, better than cross country running for sure. The whole village would meet at the community centre on the weekends and we would all dance together. I left my village when I was 13 in 2003 so I am not sure if they still do country dancing in 2022.

They still do. Was in Gairloch last year, visiting family and the ceilidh shindigs are back in business! I recommend to keep the Scottish pastimes of drinking whiskey and dancing apart from each other. Thought I'd pass out and get dragged along at one point. 😂

He wasn’t correcting her, she didn’t say anything wrong. She just gave a quick and generalized explanation of the ball, and he gave an elaborated and poetic explanation behind the meaning of the ball. She said that it is done as a thank you to the servants, while he said that for a night the masters serve the servants. Both answers are correct.

The Queen Mother was "Her Majesty" and exempt from the courtesy - those of peer social standing do not show social deference to each other. HRH does not bow or curtsy to HRH or below - only to HM. HM does not bow or curtsey to anyone. The Queen Mother and Queen Mary curtsied when Elizabeth II became Queen to show support for the new sovereign; that first and singular instance was an aberration formed of personal affection and respect, not of requirement. The same for Queen Camilla's curtsy to King Charles III upon his coronation. That was a one-off.
