Gezichten van Waddinxveen in 1922 in kleur! Waddinxveen in The Netherland in color in 1922!
Interesting sights of the town of Waddinxveen nearly a century ago. Waddinxveen is a medium size town in the province of Zuid Holland in the Netherlands, not far from the more well-known city of Gouda (famous for its cheese and candles).
Among other, this film shows the famous draw bridge over the river Gouwe as well as the characteristic old Dutch houses and (steam) boats on the Gouwe.
Waddinxveen was established when the famous Dutch count Floris the IV sold a piece of land in the year 1233. Therefore the town cellebrated it 750 years anniversary in 1983.
The original film has been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, enhanced and colorized with state-of-the-art AI software.

Leuk! bedankt voor het uploaden. Ik kom uit Waddinxveen, mijn eerste 23 jaar daar gewoond, nu al 15 jaar er vlakbij. Mijn familie en mijn ouders wonen er nog steeds :)
Ontzettend gaaf om Waddinxveen te zien rond het jaar dat mijn vader op de Zuidkade werd geboren.

There are such beautiful images in these colourised films from Holland in the past. Just look at the boat coming through at 4 mins or the swing bridge at 5 mins. I mean just from a purely visual point of view.
I live right next to where the Bridge shots were made. As a matter of fact most of the buildings there are still standing today!

Graag gedaan! Ik heb wel je muziek ongeveer 10% vertraagd om precies qua tijd uit te komen (en te zorgen dat het meisje precies haar voet op de rand van de kade zet bij de laatste toon). Ik hoop niet dat je deze vertraging erg vindt.

Leeboards. These so-called botters (sailing barges) do not have a deep keel, like other sailing ships. When sailing one leeboard is retracted on the windward side to reduce drag in the water and the other, deployed leeboard "pushes" the boat up when sailing to the prevent it from being tipped over by the wind in the sails and to aid in directional control/stability. Leeboards provided the advantages of shallow draught for working close inshore and an unobstructed hold for cargo. This idea of adding leeboards was copied from the Chinese junks that Dutch and Portuguese traders/explorers encountered in the far-east around 1570, and added to their own designs back in Europe.

@@sixpackpilot I think you will also find that when alongside a tidal wharf that dries out at low tide, the leeboard can be lowered to assist the barge in remaining upright.

Toen was de hefbrug nog niet gebouwd en de Gouwe lijkt ook een stuk smaller dan tegenwoordig 😎
