Gettysburg Secerets 1

Searching the Gettysburg National Park for lesser known locations. There were someplace that were notes accessible due to the time of year and the under brush. Because of this some locations will have to be revisited in the fall. When the next visit is made the last remaining carvings will be explored at the McPherson Barn.

I remember climbing the tower on big round top when I was a boy, in the 1960's. What an incredible view from up there!

J Tipton may be from June Francis Tipton who was a child during the battle. His uncle was the battlefield photographer who owned the area of Devils Den and used it as a photo studio after the war.

David T. Spangler. Can you tell me the location where "J Tipton" is scratched into the boulder? In the Gettysburg Secrets 1 video, it looks to be near a battery on Little Roundtop, simply judging by the video sequence before minute 8:47 where the name is shown. Are you indicating the name is really scratched into a boulder at Devil's Den? (The Tiptons of Gettysburg are distant relatives to me.)

Atchison is a relative. Cool to see someone talk about him in a video!

This is beyond cool. Thank you for sharing I can’t wait to go in March for my birthday. I was going to go in 2020 but corona hit in March and everything shut down.

I haven’t been able to take a trip back up north for a while. There are a lot of other little things to see that are off the beaten path around Gettysburg. I plan to make more videos when ever i can get back up there.

Strong Vincent carving (in part) - "3rd Brigade 1st Division 5th Corps" The S in Corps is backward. Its amazing how so many people who seem to like visiting Gettysburg or have an interest in the Civil War have no clue about the structure of the army divided into - larger to smaller - Corps, then Division, then Brigade, then Regiment, then Company. This is very basic and the division of the Army of the Potomac changed over time but this is the structure for the Battle of Gettysburg and the rest of the war. It gets a bit more complicated at the regimental level (most often divided by State) and then you start seeing things like - Infantry Regiment, Volunteers, Volunteer Infantry, Cavalry Regiment, Artillery Battery, Battalion, Reserves, State Militia, etc. etc.

Great presentation. I only knew about the Strong Vincent carving and there is one on a big rock near Spangler’s Spring.

There are more that I didn't show and several I just couldn't get to. One that I've always wanted to see is the flag on top of elfin rock in devils den.

Yeah, post-Fall would be better...just not contending with bugs and heat/humidity would be worth it. Nice job!

Yes the fall is really the best time to get off the beaten path to see all this stuff. It just happened this was the only time I had available to get to Gettysburg this particular year.

Not a bad idea. The only issue I could see doing that way is the rock surface is so irregular I doubt the chalk would cover completely enough to make the carvings stand out. Next time I'm up that way Ill give it a try and see how it works.
