Gettysburg's Forgotten Failed Charge | History Traveler Episode 153
Many people associate the Battle of Gettysburg ending with Pickett's Charge, but there was another charge that occurred that day that also ended in disaster although it was for the Union instead of the Confederacy. We're venturing down to one of the more neglected areas of Gettysburg to explore the place where Gen. Farnsworth executed an ill fated cavalry charge that ended in disaster. Much to see here!

I've stayed at the Battlefield Bed and Breakfast. It is a really nice place to stay. I highly recommend it. They serve an amazing breakfast. And yes, for any ghost hunters out there, it is haunted. Ghost Hunters did an episode at this place and caught and apparition on camera. One of the most impressive I've seen.
I visited Gettysburg 3 years ago but did not give myself enough time to visit the cavalry battlefields. I plan on retiring in Gettysburg so this is on my list.

This is really sad. Gen Farnsworth had the same revelation as Hood and Longstreet. Wasn't their a small engagement with sharpshooters in Gettysburg on July 4th?

I have read so much about Gettysburg, watched all the videos and yet I had no one speak of this charge until you. Wow.... Gettysburg stories are never ending...and you are right on Kilpatrick. Just not realistic on how to use Cavalry
As a kid, I was very familiar with the battle of Gettysburg and was (for a 10year old) very knowledgeable of the battle. You have far exceeded my knowledge of the battle. Great Job I have no clue how you learned so much without dedicating your life to this Battle.

Thanx JD. I've been on the road myself today and got home to find this little gem waiting for me. That war was immense and the men who fought it were giants. Some with egos to match. I'm glad not all commanders were as foolhardy as Killpatrick. Did he even come to have a look at this mess?!! Farnsworth carried out his orders like a true good soldier. But he must have known this was going to be his last action. THAT is bravery.
It's a shame that so many died due to someone being so full of themselves. You know at least some of these men knew they would die ahead of time, and what fear they had. This happened more than once on both sides, with different leaders, no wonder there are claims to spirits in Gettys burg.
Beautifully shot and delivered. The best historical content on YT.

My second great grandfather was part of this section of the battle fighting for the Rush’s Lancers as a private. I bought a Lance earlier this year as part of my Civil War collection.
Kilpatrick was also known as General Kill Cavalry.
Best Gettysburg videos and explanations of various events on social media been to Gettysburg 16 times and absolutely love them. Does a great job!!!
This represents one of the central themes of the Civil War- another incompetent Union General sending his men to slaughter. In fact- this may be the CENTRAL theme of the entire Civil War- the general incompetence of Union Generals:(

Another excellent and fascinating video! Thank you JD for teaching me something new about Gettysburg that I was unaware of. The thing I found most amazing was the monument to the 1st Vermont Cavalry that stated out of the 2297 men that served in this unit, more died of Confederate prisons and disease and accidents than died of a direct result of combat. I knew that most men killed in the years of civil war were from these reasons but had never seen an actual tally of the numbers for one particular group during the entirety of the war. Thank you again for doing what you do!

If you compare the numbers and the cost, Longstreet’s assault on the 2nd day on the left flank of the Union Army was larger and more “involved” than Pickets charge! A lot of people don’t compare them but they’re very similar except for numbers! Longstreet’s on the left flank had over +15,000 and Pickets charge had somewhere between 12,000-13,500!

Interesting video 👍 That was hard to find on a map. I ended up looking for the Slyder farm and was able to connect the dots with a map from the American Battlefield Trust's website. Just to the west of Big Round Top. There's a bridge over the same creek on the way to the Round Tops that has dinosaur footprints in the cap stones. Close as I got. I imagine later in the year your can't even get through the area unless they mow it.
