Getting xAPI Tracking in Your LMS with cmi5

SCORM data is very limited, VERY limited. Typically you can track start, quiz data and completion. That's it! xAPI allows you to track more specific behavior and get very detailed analytics. Most LMSs even allow you to upload published courses from standard eLearning tools that will report xAPI without any type of programming.
This is done with the cmi5 standard. In. this video Jeff will walk you through how to publish your content from Storyline to the cmi5 standard and view xAPI statements right in your LMS. ALL without any code!

Hi jeff, i created scorm package in storyline. I export and added in drupal application. Any possible to track the course completion percentage and save data to db??

So if you are just doing a website you would not actually do SCORM as that expects to be on an LMS. Just publish to web. To track on a DB you would have to either create custom triggers to send over data or use something like xAPI which s designed for that kind of thing.

Hi Jeff! Did you write any statements into the course itself, or does storyline just those verbs to use for those types of actions?

Storyline does it automatically. You can trigger custom ones but you have to do it differently which I have other videos on that.

Did they ever create a service to import CMI5 into an existing platform in any language? I can see a few open source LRS projects but I'm apparently missing the connection between those services and a actual LMS implementation.

Are you talking about importing into the LMS itself? Yeah some will allow you to import CMI5 in any language. Just depends on how the LMS implemented it. Hope I understood that right.

@@LearningDojo Its more to the effect that the LMS hasn’t yet and is looking to just run a open source LRS, I warned them this wouldn’t do CMI5 out of the box, would need to sort out parsing xml/zip, and sort out out OAuth access tokens. I didn’t have any direct feedback for them as I can’t find a real world example on github (ADL LRS) or CATAPULT that was easy to point to for inspiration.

I have never been given a usecase for xAPI. CMI Interactions, Suspend Data, Learner Comments..... I've never needed to send something to an LMS that could not be done via interactions. I'd really love to find something I'm missing here.

Do you mean everything you track can be done via SCORM?

@@DougWallace I mean I am not going to argue, if you get what you need out of SCORM you have a valid point. Do what works for you! For me, I like the greater definition of verbs more than anything. Instead of just using quiz questions to track interactions I like using other types tracking each tab visited with the behavior description like "Jeff Batt visited tab 1" and "Jeff Batt visited tab 2". That way I can see what is the most visited tabs and pages within the course. It was interesting to see what pages learners would come back to more often. You would think the first and last page but in some of our courses we found that page 13 (for example) was the most visited page, so it helped identify the content that was more important to the learners. Also, xAPI being able to track outside of the LMS is one of the main reasons I use xAPI. Again, not trying to say you can't make SCORM work, just some benefits that I have seen.

@@LearningDojo why can't "Jeff Batt visited tab 1" be sent as a CMI Interaction? I'm not agruing, I'm looking for what I'm missing.

Sounds like you like the flexibility to add your own statements that your authoring tool gives you. But there is no reason that authoring tool couldn't let you do that and still export a SCORM 2004 package.
