Unfortunately, she has to share her her power with the Syndicate - a group of richest people in the se region. Think Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, etc., as a government entity. The lalafell here is part of the Syndicate, and even by their standards is a little shitstain. The Sultana had been our friend and ally, so to be accused and framed for poisoning and regicide by said shitstain is... infuriating, to put it mildly. And if you're wondering why we don't just go on a rampage... the simple answer is 'politics'. Yeah, I hate politics too.

In brief, the Sultana, a side-character who rules the nation-state of Ul'dah, intends to abdicate the throne and install a democratic council in her place - but this guy, who is a member of her council, has her poisoned and your character framed for it to prevent this, as he would stand to lose power.

@@fancymustache3793 Definitely bribed them, that's like politics 101 in Ul'dah. Not that the other City-States are better. In fact the only other faction with a reasonably structured government (known at the time of ARR) is Garlemald and they are the bad guys! Makes Gridania and Limsa Lominsa look like after-thouhgts.

The only time I ever remember the player base noticeably getting upset was from the King Moogle trial. Even though people were understanding about the Earthquake at the time. We got King Moogle instead of Titan which ruffled a lot of feathers. People might have said they didn't like the direction of the story but I don't remember anyone truly caring either way.
