Getting the RIGHT SPEED to Read on Your Speedometer

Viewer Marco changed the tire size on his first generation CR-V and now his speedometer reads a speed higher than what he's actually going. His tire size is smaller than stock, so this is to be expected. So, how do we correct it? The fix is the same as what we would and have done for engine swaps.

    I've always just removed the plastic cover to the speedometer and pulled the needle out from the pin it's connected to. Then just drive down a non-busy road with the cruise control set to 60 using GPS and insert the needle back in pointed to 60. I've done this on a 2000 Eclipse and 1996 del Sol and no issues.

    You can also do this with the car on Jack stands and the drive wheels up. A scan tool will tell you your vehicle speed. Then adjust your cluster like you did. I do this on my 95 mustang and my 02 Dodge RAM 💪

    Hello vtec gurus, I sent in the original question.. Thanks for the video response.. I did try both the crv and ek clusters and there was no change in the indicated speed, but they are 100% interchangeable in my case ('96 ek, '98 crv).. next thought is to try a vss from bseries civic or integra.. would dseries vss fit the awd crv?

    Indications are that all VSS interchange. However, I believe the way it works is vss to ecu, ecu to cluster. The cluster is just the display. I mean, you can connect an obd reader and see that the speed is actually in the ecu. I believe Brian may have mistaken speedo correction for odometer correction when he said shops were able to alter the odometer readings... which in our case isn't relevant since we have mechanical odometers

    @bgee461 the factory wiring diagrams i have are showing the vss Ts off to both the ecu and speedometer directly, which leads me to switching vss.. I have eyes or for a (nearly) free one, not trying to spend on a guess.. thx for yr input!

    I have an 05 CR-V 5mt and I just used a tire calcuculator to get it close. I moved from the stock size 215/65R16 to 225/50R18 on 18x8.5 wheels. It's still about the same height at 27" but my speedometer is right on. I'll work on lowering next.

    I had to use a ktuned vss converter between my kpro and the dash. I think I had to adjust it by ~16% to get the speedometer to match the gps speedometer on my phone.

    Ive had civic, civic ex, civic si, civic sir, acura el, and crv clusters all in my 98 civic. They all read exactly the same.

    I have a crx with a b16a swap the b16 has a acl oil pump .I use the car for hpde. I noticed that with the stock pcv system I keep blowing gaskets . Like vtec solenoid. Val over gaskets. So I bought a speed factory canister catch can . I’ve tried hooking it up several different ways . Off the back of the block .I removed that then hooked the pcv hose off the black box and the valve cover to it . The issue I’m having now is the van keeps filling up and spewing over . What would you recommend? Would it be a catch can issue or an engine issue?

    You can get a speedometer gearbox to adjust the speed. It would require a custom cable if it's a cable actuated speedo. If you want me to dig up the names of the shops reply.

    I know on the last video you said the tsx was wrecked, any info you can share with us, I know a lot of people loved your tsx content! Ps just bought a 06 tsx, best car I’ve owned!

    The original TSX was wrecked years ago. The white TSX and the silver J swapped TSX were obtained after that. We also obtained a 4th TSX that we haven't put into a video yet. We love the TSX too!

    Hey Brian, enjoy the content and love getting any and all information I'm a bit of nerd for stock replacement set ups, but would love to find out if you had any insight, I own a 99 Civic LX currently with Si Brakes, a long time ago there was a person with the handle "Brake Expert" who used to post different Brake set ups that you could use/ modify to work on Honda Civics from 92-2000, more for 96-2000 but stopped after 2006 or so but I was looking for a replacement for ITR Hubs since they were 5x114.3 and was wondering if anyone you knew had tested CRZ hubs. Sadly they aren't sold through anyone other than Honda but as far as Spine to axle and Brake rotor center bore, and are very close on wheel bearing size, they match very closely but part numbers don't match to be a 100% replacement for USDM ITR hubs would this be viable as a replacement for 32mm hubs 5x114.3 hub for a more modern car? or would 8th gen R18 civics fit more closely, no aftermarket companies that make CRZ or ITR hubs to do a 100% comparison of sizes. Would love some insight and your thoughts on this.

    Hey Brian, I’m having issues with my shifts from 4th to 5th. I have a k24a2 with the 06 civic si transmission with lsd, ktune shifter and hybrid shift cables in a 96 midori civic hatch. I had the ktuned race shifter cables but I switched to hybrid think it was the cable stretched and the shifter was quite loose.. it’s a bit tighter but still hard to find 5th gear yet. It feels like it goes too far to the right and passes the engagement point of 5th gear. Do you think that the reverse lockout would cause this or is this a whole different issue. Side note.. I had to replace 2nd and 3rd gears and synchros. Found that one of the shifter forks was about to break off so I welded it back together. Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you

    My speedometer still doesn't work on my 1989 CRX but you answered my question. I need some kind of converter. Bad thing also is Hondata is not reading speed either.

    Isn't an 89 civic cable driven? My 88 is, and I think my 91 is as well, but with a little box that sends the speed signal to the ECU

    @bgee461 It is, but I'm referring to Hondata not being able to read my speed, which is the most important. I will have to get a cable box thing for the instrument cluster one day. I don't know what kind, though...?

    Would love to Kswap my GK5 but keep it automatic. How much more difficult or easier would that be and would the same engines be an option despite having an auto transmission?

    You’d have to use the “old school” automatic , not your current cvt and use the ecu from an automatic civic. No one has any info on the wiring between those ecu’s and that generation of fit. Probably not worth the hassle, and there are probably many incompatibilities between that engine and trans combo and that generation fit.

    same question here. im trying to budget build my base rsx auto and well there just are not any manual transmissions avauiilable for a reasonable price. swapped a k24a2 in and portmatcehed up the 2006 tsx head and intake on a 2004 lower and have it in the car and the wiring has been a complete hassel . lots of info to swap to manual out there but my c 101 is different and most of my wires for the at are just not listed or difficult to find. between all data info i happened into your c 101 plug info and the 2002 2003 service manual i almost have it figured out. problem has been finding a KNOWN GOOD HARNESS TO START FROM AS THE ONE TIME I FOUND ONE PEOPLE HACKED IT UP[ TO just get the 50 deg, cam gear out fast in the yard. that and how if possible can i get this tuned. i have the 2006 tsx ecdu and the 2003 base auto ecu as well if that might help. the transmission is from the rsx. sorry about the mess of a post just pressed for time and really need some help here
