Getting The Best From The Mazda MX-5 | iRacing

Ойындар

So we’ve got this guy, Dave Cam, and he’s pretty good at racing on the iRacing service. He’s particularly great at making helpful guides on the platform with that slow, methodical approach for teaching. While we usually have him on for track guidance, today is going to be a Dave Cam car guide.
Rookies to iRacing will be very familiar with the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup car as it’s a free addition when signing up for the service. Therefore, with so many drivers going through the rookie ranks to start their iRacing careers, the MX-5 Cup is one of the most popular cars to drive in the game. It also helps that it’s a popular car in general for drivers of all skill levels.
Dave has the tips and tricks to get everything you can out of the iRacing MX-5. From reference points to how to get the most out of any corner, from the ABS braking system in the car, gearing, and much more, strap in and learn what makes this Mazda tick.
This car guide takes place at Okayama International Circuit, and it’s the perfect place to practice all of Dave’s tips. If you haven’t checked out one of Dave’s guides before, definitely give those a watch. If you enjoyed what you saw today, give us a like on this video and subscribe for more content like this!

    I didn't even realize the MX-5 had ABS, mind blown. I thought it just had weak brakes. I come from games where I turn off all assists from day one. I assumed ABS in iRacing was something you needed to turn on, or maybe I saw "braking assist" in the settings and misunderstood it as ABS?

    Thanks, Dave after a week got to D class on Roads and Rally and got to try your revs advice out for the mx5. Thus far I have been maxing all cars on the revs, any other car's revs advice would be very welcome. And how do I get my tires warmed up ASAP, I have to be very careful on my first lap corners now not to spin out. I need to get myself some Iracing dollars but here in the Netherlands, I can't get any Iracing gift cards to get more tracks and cars. So if a Dutchy can help/advise me with that I would be very grateful for that. Now I have to upgrade myself from my current kitchen table Logitec g920 (with unsolvable double-shift up problems) to a DD wheel/ pedal set and a proper rig, my wallet is complaining but I'm having a blast. I have to try to find out where I can compare DD wheels etc. but that's half the fun.

    Practice until your lap times are reasonably competitive with practice/race laps in your split. Then start practicing with others, this allows you to start learning how to share track with other drivers. You can "play race" people as long as you communicate and aren't too aggressive. People will "play race" you as well, so this gives you a chance to practice your nerves when in close proximity to others. Finally, join a practice session that's associated with a race. If you feel comfortable, go into qualifying. If you're not, you can always quit. Go ahead and qualify. How did you do? Top 5? Last of the folks with times on the board? Either way you can always quit, or start from pit lane. First few races, maybe start from pit lane and try to make it all the way through with no incidents. Then start back of the field and grab a few cheap places on the first lap (but give them back if they get back going and are faster). Slowly but surely you'll start to realize you're legitimately faster than some of the other drivers and you'll start to set targets for yourself (e.g. qualify and finish top 5). Then it's podiums. You'll suffer setbacks when you make mistakes, or when others wreck/spin you out. Keep at it and eventually there will be moments when you realize you're "getting it."

    @@OfficeLinebacker thanks for the time to write that. That helps knowing I can back out at any time until the actual race. I've done a few practices since I posted this and I get what you mean on the "play race" I've had a few fun moments like that. I've just been in the background learning the tracks that are for the week in the mx5 cup so I'm slowly getting the nerve up to jump in one and starting from the pits seems like a good idea thanks.

Right at the exit the cat behind me is going 20+mph faster than me. It's like they hit the nitros bottle and recieved a huge speed advantage. It's supposed to be a fixed race but I'm getting killed on long straights. I am killing them in the infield but I'm not even in the game on the straights. What am I missing. I thought I read in the notes of the car (if you open a session, go into the garage to edit setup and go to the notes tab) that the ideal gear change point was when all the lit dash lights flashed once at 7400RPM just before the limiter? I think you might have gotten that one wrong Dave..... definitely don't want to hit the limiter, but also don't want to leave those 400RPM on the table when you're in the higher gears.

  • @davecamm

    @davecamm

    2 жыл бұрын

    There is no way I'd be revving this motor to 7400rpm. A fraction of a second later and you're into the limiter and losing time. Just over 7k is where I'm at 👍

  • @devlifedotnet

    @devlifedotnet

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@davecamm fair enough, I just thought it was odd given iRacing explicitly say the “ideal” shift point for this car, but you’re right in that you definitely lose way more time hitting the limiter than you gain pushing the revs higher…. There’s just a few tracks where I find that punishes you. Oulton park fosters for example where you start going up the hill at around 7k revs in 3rd and if you shift to 4th before or on the hill you just lose so much time on the delta compared to waiting until the rev lights flash….. but equally you’re at 5K iR compared to my measly 1.8k so 🤷🏻‍♂️
