Getting technical with Sugatsune!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A chat in my workshop with Mike Harney from Sugatsune as he shows me some of the range of hinges and related furniture fittings available from Sugatsune, including the Olympia hinge range, launched as a direct contender (and improvement upon?) Blum’s Blumotion cliptop range. We will look in detail at the features of the hardware and how it works.

From an amateur perspective I never knew there were so much about hinges. Thank you for helping me understand the differences and manufacturer types. Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Mike S you’re welcome! The subject is a bit of a rabbit hole. Early on I tried various different brands/types of hinges and was astonished at the variety, and the incompatibilities between different mounting plates and hinges even within the same brand.

Interesting comment - I kept an ongoing good working relationship with Sugatsune, and in particular their rep Mike, and continued to buy from them for specialise flap hardware, heavy duty hinges, and other special cases not covered by blum. Then they proposed a closer relationship for mutual benefit in which I would use and talk about their olympia hinge range, with them supplying the hinges free of charge. The hinges are very well made, however we hit upon a few problems. Firstly with their inset hinge - it simply wouldn't work with our unusual alcove cabinets hinging method, where we use an inset hinge for the sake of lateral positioning of the door, but we actually overlay the top and bottom of the door. This workls fine with blum, but with the sugatsune hinge, the door moves backwards as it opens, meaning it fouls on the top and bottom edge of the unit. This is because the designers did not anticipate this use case. So reluctantly we had to stick with blum for inset hinges. Then, for the overlay hinges we hit upon 2 more issues. In japan a standard board and door thickness is 20mm. This means that the hinges come factory set to overlay the carcase at 18mm (leaving a 2mm gap) on a 20mm carcase, but in the uk this means that every hinge has to be tweaked in, whereas a blum hinge will go straight on at the ideal overlay. Secondly, the olympias coped less well with doors of 22mm thickness and above, tending to bind when opened

@@Alastair_Freebird thanks for the detailed response. I think a one size fits all solution for many things in life doesn’t exist! These things are sent to test us 😀

Nice selection of products. It's apparent (at 2:08) Sugatsane has no idea where Montreal is lol. Hopefully we can still get their products here in Canada. Enjoyed watching!

They look good, are similar hinges a similar price? I like the idea of one supplier for all hinges, it at least makes it easier to standardise and understand the catalogue!!

Matt Kindon I’m told Sugatsune are doing these competitively priced with the Blum equivalents

theethee yog you mean when you offer up the second or third hinge (premounted on the door) and it just refuses to click on? Sometimes it’s a line-up issue with the mounting plate (vertical positioning) or else the hinge arm adjustments have already been moved out of sync vs the other hinges. It’s frustrating when it happens, and Sugatsune’s system on the Olympia hinges does seem like it will reduce the issue.

How do the prices compare between the hinge brands?

Sugatsune are very well designed, but they are very expensive and pricey. If the budget allows then they are (possible) the best you can get, otherwise Blum are more affordable and cost effective when building cabinetry.
